Nightwolf - The Fox and The Wolf

Description: What will the future await for the fledgling Society of the Full Moon? Kiyomi and Nightwolf discuss that while they get to know each other better in the best way possible.. through Mortal Kombat!!

EARLY EVENING

SOUTHTOWN FORESTS

Much has happened since Nightwolf traveled out of his stomping grounds and ventured to these foreign lands. Following the trails of the spirits, the Apache shaman encountered Egyptian Deities, followed by coming into contact with Raiden himself, who bestowed upon him the duty of assembling Earthrealm defenses against the forces of Outworld, and unite all who live here under one united banner. Since then, what was first a rag tag of band of terrified Darkstalkers fearing for their lives and at best incredulous humans, has steadily increased in size, slowly but surely becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The Society has come a long way.

And the same can't exactly be said by Nightwolf.

Although by far the best warrior of his tribe, Nightwolf has made the leap of jumping out of his small pond to dare the oceans full of much bigger fish. It has been a struggle so far, which is infuriating to the Sin Eater, not because he has any allusions of becoming the best fighter this world has seen, but because if he can barely fight against human warriors, how well will he fare when the darkness comes?

It frustrates him that despite all his efforts, he is still so far away from becoming a true defender of Earthrealm.

Such can be seen now, having traveled out into the woods and away from the shrine to train in solitude. Having planted a wooden dummy, the shaman is seen today practicing his Okichitaw arts by slicing and hacking apart at the dummy with his energy axes. Weaving and ducking as he sends the dummy spinning, then surging back up to block with his axes and swipe with his knife. Okichitaw does not literally mean "Fang and Claw style" for no reason, Nightwolf fights much like a wolf would, swiping with his axes as if they were claws and stabbing with his knife as if it were a fang.

Now that Kiyomi has been accepted as a member of this society, she was free to roam around and see those who were here. The Kitsune had her own plans of using the society for her own purpose, though her purposes follow the ideals and goals of the society, or so she believes, to some extend.

TKiyomi has prepared some tea, using her own infusions and a teapot she had found lying around the shrine. Old fashioned cup, but they did the job. The woman carries herself slowly, holding the teapot and cups on a small tray, an umbrella at her side as she makes her way out of the shrine toward Nightwolf.

Her lips curl into a smile as she stares at Nightwolf and she sets down the tray, pouring down some for herself and for Nightwolf, should he choose to share some of the infusion with her. A delicious Oolong infusion.

The woman remains silent while he fights though, respectfully, not to disrupt his kata and fight, though she recognizes the beastial fury with which he fights, having spent most of her life with other wolves, after all.

"Impressive," Kiyomi says with a slow nod of her head. She is sitting gracefully in the few stairs leading to the shrine, "I have made some tea, if you wish," Kiyomi offers. Her umbrella is just by her side and closed.

Ah yes, Kiyomi, the Society's latest acquisition. Well versed in all things supernatural, Nightwolf had long known of the existence of the kitsune. Not unlike the Coyote stories of his people, they were predominantly known as tricksters, at best mischievous and at worst truly malicious. Only time will tell if Kiyomi will live up to such stories.

That said, Nightwolf had never actually met a kitsune before Kiyomi, and thus was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt besides the fact that it was the responsibility of the Society to take in all who needed it. How could Nightwolf spread the word of diversity and tolerance if he himself did not practice said virtues?

And so, despite the better judgment of everyone else, he now had a nearby fox woman making tea whilst he practiced. It was enough to make anyone keep a wary eye over their shoulder, though Nightwolf seemed content keeping his focus on his target.

The Apache finishes up his Okichitaw techniques of hooking limbs with the wing of his axe and slides his knife across the dummy's limbs when Kiyomi compliments his form. "Thank you." He says straightening up as his spectral weapons disappear into thin air.

He goes to sit in front of Kiyomi, graciously accepting her offered tea to sip on it. The warmth of the liquid feels good in the current cold climate.

"Hmm, I have noticed that sword you carry." Mentions the skinwalker in mid tea sipping. "Are you perchance an Iaijutsu or Kenjutsu practitioner?"

The tea had been prepared like it was an art. It's taste was exquisite, and its warmth was definately soothing and recomforting. "Enjoy," Kiyomi says with a gentle smile, taking her own cup.

She brings it to her lips and sips gently, keeping her eyes closed, holding the cup in both of her hands to warm them up. The kitsune arches a brow when Nightwolf mentions the sword. Her tails sway gently behind her, and Kiyomi glances over her umbrella. Someone attentive enough might notice it's other function and how it hides a blade within.

"You are very perceptive," Kiyomi says. She nods her head a bit, "Iaijutsu," Kiyomi lifts her gaze up before she adds, "My father taught me the techniques," Her lips curl into a nostalgic smile, "You could say, he was a samurai of sort, keeper of the old traditions," Kiyomi lifts her hand up to brush away a few locks of hair from her face. "I have been raised with those traditions..." She says, letting her words trail off. It's a wonder why Kiyomi seems so attached to those traditions, perhaps she does not hate humanity so much after all.

Nightwolf is after all trained to see what is not there.

Even the exquisite taste of the superbly prepared tea could not distract him from noticing Kiyomi's warrior nature. As stated before, kitsune are deceptive creatures, and despite the fact that Kiyomi looks the part of a delicate tea making, kimono wearing maiden, Nightwolf suspected that she was a capable fighter. Noticing the hidden sword in her umbrella confirmed his suspicion that the huntress could take care of herself.

"I am somewhat familiar with Iaijutsu." Explains the shaman whilst he savors the tea. "My own fighting style is based on parrying blows and closing the distance. Iaijutsu practitioners as well as Aikido masters always proved troublesome opponents, since their styles are very defensive, there is nothing to parry, and thus problematic when I dive in to attack." Another sip of the teas. "A masterful blend by the way, my lady. I must commend you."

"Would you care for a spar? I will never overcome these challenges if I do not practice."

Kiyomi reaches out for the umbrella with one hand. She lifts it up and fastens it to her side, somewhat, like a proper katana sheath would have been. "Are you certain?" Kiyomi asks, "Iaijutsu is also a swort art about taking down your opponent as rapidly as possible," She comments, "... And a blade can be a deadly weapon, I wouldn't want to injure you," There was obvious and earnest concern in her voice.

Though for some reason, Kiyomi almost expects Nightwolf's manly pride to make him act like he was fearless about this. A thin smirk spreads on her lips as she rises and takes a few steps away, one hand holding the sheath as she prepares herself.

She turns on her heels after a few steps to face Nightwolf, a teasing smile on her lips as she says, with an equally teasing intonation, "You better not make me regret submitting to a weak alpha..." The kimono opens up around her legs as Kiyomi's knees bend slightly, turning her torso and keeping her hand on the scabbard of her katana, ready to draw her sword at any moment.

Pride is naught but a human fallacy. It's simple fact that drives Nightwolf's will here. He will not get better if he doesn't practice and backing out from a challenge will not help him at all in the coming fight against Outworld. The shaman gives Kiyomi an arched eyebrow look of amusement when she warns him of the folly of fighting her before standing with the energy of a man that looks like he must do a tedious chore. "It won't be to the death, woman." He tries to explain. Maybe something got lost in translation there, or maybe Darkstalkers have no such thing as sparring, it would explain why all his fights against them really have been to the death. Interesting how things work out, this might be his first 'friendly spar' against a Darkstalker ever, figures that his partner wouldn't know the difference.

Nightwolf moves away from Kiyomi to put some distance between them, turning just in time to see her adopt a stance and tease her some more about asking for a fight. "I hate to disappoint you, sister. But the closest thing to an alpha in this pack is Raiden." Kind of hard to be in the same level as a God.

Nevertheless he cracks his neck before a glowing green energy axe appears on his hand. "That said, I'm no push over myself. Begin when you are ready."

Most of Kiyomi's use of her Iaijutsu generally ended up in the death of her opponent. Or at least, she uses it to devastating ends, lethal and deadly strikes that might eventually result in death. If she's careful enough, or if Nightwolf's agile enough, he might avoid her deadly strike.

"Very well then," Kiyomi says. Though she does not attack Nightwolf right away, she studies and gauges him for a moment, waiting for the good opportunity to strike.

Then all of a sudden, Kiyomi's body charges at Nightwolf, ready to unsheath the blade and strike...!

And then at the last moment, just as Kiyomi draws her blade to strike and swing her katana, she disappears. It had all been just a mere illusion, perhaps one Nightwolf's mind was able to see through. The real Kiyomi is charging at Nightwolf just a moment two secondws after. She draws the blade with lightning speed, slashing it out rapidly for Nightwolf's midsection.

See what is not there.

A requirement when one fights a trickster Kitsune.

Reading and memorizing stories of said creatures can sometimes make up for not having any experience. A normal man, or even a Hunter, that was presented with such an illusionary technique, would be totally perplexed on what to do or how to react. But Nightwolf.. he's not the speaker of the Society just because of his devilishly handsome good looks---urgh, must have channeled Benimaru there somewhere. Nightwolf makes up for his lack of Godlike power that Raiden posses, with being very knowledgeable of the world around him. In another life, he might have been a scientist or a doctor, but fate would set him firmly on the path of a warrior, and he thus uses his wisdom to overcome his foes.

The skinwalker stands perfectly still when Kiyomi charges directly at him, blank white eyes narrowed as he studies her form. At the last second, when she's all but on top of him, his eyes widen and he twitches in recognition.

That is an illusion.. he can't read her energy signature.

As he suspected, the illusion vanishes and the real Kiyomi comes flying right towards him to slash at his torso. Knowing that attack is the real one, Nightwolf forms an energy shield on his left forearm which he then uses to bash the sword out of the way followed by a jab to Kiyomi's nose in retaliation using the top part of his energy tomahawk.

"Hmrg.." He grumbles, realizing he just whacked Kiyomi on her pretty face. "Sorry."

This is part of the risk with Kiyomi's mental trickery -- it can backfire if someone is able to see through them too easily, or if she is not able to manipulate their mind clearly to make them sense what she desires them to sense, allowing her to follow them and feint them as she pleases.

The shield of energy clashes with the sharp blade with a loud metallic clank. Kiyomi attempts to break through it, though her attempt is vain and leaves her vulnerable for Nightwolf's retaliation. The woman whimpers a bit as Nightwolf uses his strength to push her away, and Kiyomi staggers a few steps to regain her balance, only to have Nightwolf's tomahawk right in the face.

She groans painfully and uses her free hand to hold her nose momentarily. Her posture is vulnerable and exposed, using this display of weakness to manipulate Nightwolf in a different way, tricking him into lowering his guard seeing the concern he shows at having whacked her face. A less psychic sort of manipulation, though that may be just as effective if not more.

The katana is sheathed back, and when Nightwolf seems close enough, she uses the umbrella she has, swinging it under Nightwolf's arm, opening the umbrella to trap his arm in it. She swings it and uses her legs to throw Nightwolf off balance and slam him into the ground with the help of her umbrella.

COMBATSYS: Kiyomi successfully hits Nightwolf with Ruse du Renard.

Trickiness comes in all shapes and forms, and sometimes a more mundane form of illusion is just as effective, if not more, that physic tactics.

Nightwolf is simply too caring for his own good. Despite having ruthlessly killed Darkstalkers and demons in the past, he is in the end a defender of Earthrealm, and is at heart a good man.

A problem when one faces a tricky kitsune who has no qualms of using the dirtiest of tactics and pretend she's really hurt. "Are you alrigh--AAGH!" Just as he was extending a hand to examine her face, the shaman is repaid for his good intentions with an umbrella smack on his side, followed by a sweep to the legs that sends him careening back first into the snow covered ground. "Oof!" He grunts as he collapses, blinking in surprise.

"That.. was cheap." The Apache complains before rolling backwards and away from Kiyomi to get back on his feet. He has to study this woman a bit more and decides to use her own trickery against her by absorbing her unnatural aura and empower himself. The shaman's muscles grow in size and his canine teeth elongate beginning to show his true wolf nature.

The woman's lips curl into a playful smile, giving her an almost angelic look on her face. The woman took a step away though, not pushing her advantage or trying to mercilessly attack Nightwolf once she had managed to throw him into the ground.

Kiyomi pulls her umbrella away, taking a few steps back. A soft chuckle escape her throat and Kiyomi prepares herself to draw her blade once more, "I thought you wanted practice, against trickery and fast opponents," Her intonation was playful and teasing -- the tails behind her swaying back and forth, like countless tendrils, a sort of dance perhaps meant to distract the mind and allow her to better use her suggestions and trickery of the mind.

She sheathes her blade and prepares for another assault. She seems totally obvious to how Nightwolf empowers himself with her aura, but before long, Kiyomi charges him once more. She leans slightly and dashes at him rapidly, the tails swaying hypnotically, distractly, trying to put a veil of illusions over her charge, disrupting his vision and making him think the attack isn't what it truly is, altering his perception of her charge.

It will appear to him as a simple charge : one where she dashes at Nightwolf and draws her sword, using the flat side of her blade to slash his midsectin with it(though bluntly). The attack seems to lack the swiftness and speed Kiyomi has shown earlier... At least, that's what Nightwolf's eyes might tell him.

Pretending to attack lightly? That's not gonna work twice!

Particularly not when Nightwolf has gotten all charged up from eating Kiyomi's decidedly dark aura.

Nightwolf doesn't reply to the woman's taunt when she scolds him for falling prey to her being hurt ruse, it was the shaman's fault admittedly, he should have known better. However, its the fact that now he's getting a bit more serious which makes him drop all pretence of being a gentleman. Rather than attempt to parry the predictable strike and risk falling for another of Kiyomi's tricks, Nightwolf takes advantage that the fox lady is leading with the flat of her blade to push right into the sword. It's the flat of the blade that strikes his stomach, not the sharp end, and now Nightwolf is right where he always wants to be in fights. Right on top of his opponent, much like a frenzied wolf.

In such close quarters blades as long as Kiyomi's are difficult to use, as are Apache tomahawks, but those are not the only weapons Nightwolf has in his repertoire. A green energy knife appears on his right hand holding it in reverse position and he uses the spectral blade to make a swipe at Kiyomi's chest.

It might seem like Kiyomi's in trouble -- so close from Nightwold, at his mercy. Her slender, delicate and feminine frame, in front of such a powerful looking man with those energy weapons ready to strike at her.

When Nightwolf's spectral blade slashes at Kiyomi's chest, his knife cuts through thin air, the imagine of Kiyomi's body dissolving into a thin miss, fading away from existence. Another trickery and illusion, Kiyomi is no longer there.

A feminine laughter echoes from above a few seconds after Kiyomi has disappeared. The Kitsune is sitting atop the edge of the shrine's roof, legs gingerly swinging back and forth, perched there and staring down at Nightwolf, a playful smile on her lips. Her tails sway behind her gently, and Kiyomi tilts her head to one side, "Over here," She calls out, "That was a close call," She admits playfully.

The Kitsune jumps from above, drawing her blade atop her head. She swings it at Nightwolf with all her strength, a mighty cleaving blow meant to break through his guard.

Nothing!?

Even in his empowered state, Nightwolf's blank white eyes widen in surprise when his knife cuts through nothing but air. Was she a ghost all along perhaps? The shaman looks about to see if this was not all illusion before he perks up in alertness when that laughter is all around him. Disturbing, but he's an expert Demon Hunter and seems to be more annoyed that concerned. Those wily Darkstalkers and their tricks...

Suddenly he looks up to see her, taunting him from above the shrine before she leaps dozens of meters to cleave through his head. It is a strike that seldom would take head on, and yet having fought so many fiends of Outworld already steadies his resolve and he holds his ground by bringing two energy tomahawks for an overhead X block that narrowly stops the blade from hitting his skull.

"That was also close." Nightwolf speaks through his haze of energy and pushes Kiyomi away to give himself some room, dashing back. Why disengage when his fighting style works better when he's inside his opponent's guard?

The answer: Because he has a lot of tools at his disposal.

Nightwolf twirls his energy axes on his hands and throws both of them at Kiyomi, sending them spinning through the air so the blade portion bites into the Kitsune's shoulders.

COMBATSYS: Kiyomi blocks Nightwolf's New Earth.

Her tails twirl behind her and Kiyomi's lips curl into a playful smile. She tilts her head to one side when he pushes away from her, allowing her to recover from her fall and prepare her next assault, "I hope this is not too unsettling for you," She moistens her lips and switches the blade into her grasp, no longer using the blunt side of her katana.

When Nightwolf throws the energy axes at her, Kiyomi takes her blade and attempts to cleave right through them. Her playful expression switches to a focused one, channeling her own spiritual energy through her katana to pierce through them. She manages to disrupt them, though part of the axes still manage to pass through her cleaving guard, hitting her shoulders and forcing her to take a few steps back not to fall down. The impact is also followed by an high-pitched, yet short scream from Kiyomi.

Though the Kitsune has no intention on fooling Nightwolf twice with the same trick. Her tails sway around behind her furiously, and she dashes rapidly at Nightwolf, swinging her blade quickly, back and forth, slashing at various angles furiously, about a dozen times, trying to flood Nightwolf with a flurry of rapid slashes of her katana.

"Nah.." Nightwolf responds quickly when Kiyomi turns the tables on him and the kitsune wonders for the well being of the Hunter. "It is good practice." And though the shaman doesn't say it because he doesn't want to belittle his partner, he has seen /much/ worst. If a Mileena trying to literally eat his face off or Jedah nearly swiping his arm clean off with his scythe didn't phase him, then there are very few things that will.

This becomes evident when Nightwolf charges head first into the flurry of strikes thrown at him by Kiyomi. "Tunca Cela...O'cicie'elo.." The shaman chanted right before he dived into the incoming attack, ignoring the cuts on his flesh given by Kiyomi's sword. "Onsimalayu! Omaki'ayo!!" His chanting continued as he began to glow blinding white and his hand suddenly reached out for Kiyomi's face.

"Wachin ksapa yo!!" He said as he finished his incantation, shooting all the energy he had gathered within him, both his own and Kiyomi's own negative energy, and channeled it all into the Darkstalker to burn her with chi laced with holy power. In the end Nightwolf /is/ a Hunter, and fighting Darkstalkers is what he does.

COMBATSYS: Nightwolf successfully hits Kiyomi with Ascension.

Nightwolf        0/-------/-------|=======\===----\1           Kiyomi

Considering the onslaugh of cuts, Nightwolf's reaction to her attack felt like pure madness to Kiyomi. Her eyes widen a bit at the though as he just bears it and starts chanting his incantation. It was definately unsettling...

The Kitsune staggers back and sheathes her katana, preparing herself for a quick draw to react to whatever sorcery Nightwolf is trying to pull off. Her ears are high on her head, senses alert as the woman glances around her nervously and keeps an eye on Nightwolf's white glow.

Then suddenly, the glow vanishes and the energy gathered is unleashed at her. No illusion or trickery will help her this time, and Kiyomi attempts to lunge out of the way, but she did not react in time. The rush of holy power mixed with her own darker psychic one makes her howl in pain, cleansed by the holy light that soon engulfs her and burns her down.

It blasts Kiyomi away, her body semi-limp as she rolls on the ground. It seems rather painful for her to rise back on her knees, and back on her feet. She grits her teeth, bearing the pain. The tails flail furiously, sending her psychic assaults on Nightwolf, to disrupt his senses, attempting to shroud him in utter darkness, to cloud his senses totally...

While he'll be totally clueless to Kiyomi's next attack, the Kitsune rises to her feet and she lunges at Nightwolf with blinding speed, drawing her blade and performing a precise and deadly strike for Nightwolf's vital organs.

With enough will power, he might be able to see glimpse of the Kitsune coming at her -- some flash of the reality the Kitsune has been trying to deny him momentarily for this attack, focing him to defend himself blinding to what she's performing.

COMBATSYS: Nightwolf blocks Kiyomi's Attaque Mortelle.

Nightwolf        0/-------/-------|====---\-------\0           Kiyomi

After the quick dash and precision strike Kiyomi attempted to perform, when Nightwolf will recover his senses (shortly after the attack), the Kitsune ends up a couple of feet behind the Apache. She continued her charge for a moment, using her remaining strength and she has fallen on her knees and hands, trying to catch her breath, and probably also trying to recover from the powerful blast of holy power she endured earlier on.

More trickery, or earnest fatigue and pain? Hard to tell with the Kitsune. Though when she seems to regain her bearing and steadies herself with her umbrella, Kiyomi says in her soft voice, "Huum... Mercy... I can barely fight still..."

If there is something that Nightwolf has ample amounts of, is Will Power.

The second is ample amounts of Turkey Jerky, its a wonder how no one has found his hidden stash in the Shrine so far.

Nonetheless, it is this burning will of his to push on through anything and everything that allows him to maintain his bearings when he's surrounded by darkness, and also notice that glimpse of an attack coming right at him through the haze that clouds his senses.

He is no stranger to trickery, he has seen even humans that are capable of such techniques. The shaman had panicked before and paid the prize, now he won't make the same mistake.

Holding his ground until the attack comes, the shaman waits until the very last second to bring his spectral battle axes into play again and make a X block right infront of his face, stopping the attack from fully connecting.

It will be clear what happened when the darkness subsidies. Nightwolf is digging his heels in and struggling to keep a struggling Kiyomi from breaking through his guard.

When she falls on all fours, the Hunter raises an axe to deliver the fatal blow. The question does indeed linger, is it more trickery or honesty?

Whichever one it is, the strict code of the Apache demands that Nightwolf never strikes down an opponent who has yielded.

He keeps his axe at the ready though, because custom dictates that he always be prepared, and he prods at her with the blunt upper side of his energy tomahawk. "Do you yield?"

COMBATSYS: Nightwolf takes no action.

The Kitsune nods her head and she mutters under her breath, "Yes," It was not admitting defeat, but it felt like it, even if it was but a friendly spare. She helps herself with her katana, her strength slowly coming back to her as she's given the chance to recover. No trick though, it was an honest surrender.

Kiyomi closes her eyes and she adjusts her kimono, as well as the katana and umbrella that serves as scabbard. "You are strong indeed..." Kiyomi admits after a moment to readjust her hair and clothing. She glances at Nightwoly, a wry smile on her face, before she turns around on her heels and strides back toward the tray that had the tea on it.

"Looks like I was right to offer you my submission when we ran into the while," The Kitsune has a soft chuckle and she slowly sits down and takes a bit of tea, "I will be leaving, tomorrow..." She admits, "I know many... Orphans, and adults who do not possess the will to fight, and who seek peace, who would seek shelter here.. I will guide them here," She says, telling her plans to Nightwolf.

Odds are, if Kiyomi carries on with her wishes, she might end up boosting up the ranks of this society with quite a few non-combattant Darkstalkers, who might be just as monstruous as all the other.

That works for him.

Nightwolf's axe banishes from his hand as the shaman takes a step back to give Kiyomi some room to stand up. She fought valiantly, no need to grimace about the apparent loss. Because Nightwolf knows that there are no losers when the original intention was to practice their arts.

The shaman hmms in thought as Kiyomi announces her plans and he takes a seat in front of her again, where they had original were sitting before. He makes no comment about her submitting to him. Honestly, phrasing it like that bothered Nightwolf a little, it made it sound like she was his slave or something. But he understand that was the terminology of the wilds and rolls with it.

"We would be glad to have them." Answers he and sips his tea, exhaling a breath of exhaustion after that hard fight. Felt nearly as good as the run though. "Tell them that the Society welcomes them with open arms, and you sister." He motions to her with his tea cup. "You are a formidable warrior as well. Your strength is a welcome addition to our group."

"I foresee great things ahead of us."
