The sole heiress to a noble family going back generations in Japan, Aya Hazuki appears to have the sort of life most people dream about. She's wealthy enough not to do more than a token amount of work, spending most of her time indulging her interests: calligraphy, art, and most importantly the study of the sword, a tradition that goes back in her family for generations. However, those close to her know that Aya has, for the last few years, found this seemingly 'perfect' existence dull and unsatisfying. Recent events, however, may be bringing unintentional excitement into her life; Aya has begun to have unsettlingly vivid dreams, and is plagued with unusual feelings of deja vu no matter she goes. What might be the source of this sudden change...?

As a result, she developed an awareness and affinity for chi that she might not have otherwise, as well as other unwelcome developments: memories that weren't hers, troubling dreams of other places and faces. However, during the events of Mortal Kombat -- in which Aya was killed -- the two were separated. Now, she casts about for a center to her existence, separated from the influence that drove her to enter the world of fighting to begin with.

In practice, she is an heiress of leisure, the only daughter of a long-standing samurai family. Their style, Hazuki Ittou-ryuu, has a history going all the way back to the famed swordsman Yagyu Jubei's Yagyu Shinkage-ryuu style. Recently, she's stepped out of the limelight and largely avoids public appearances, deferring instead to her 'cousin', Rei Hazuki; she is one of the few that know his 'real' identity.
