Laurel Järvi was the black sheep of a family obsessed with achieving its way into a prime position in the eyes of its root clan, the NOL's Kannazukis. A bright and imaginative spirit by nature, her interest in learning the family's sword techniques began and ended with an appreciation for their artistry; where the rest of her family was motivated by dreams of achieving greatness, Laurel just wanted to live to the fullest. Unfortunately, the family's aspirations were cut short in a single night: empowered by 'The Mourner' - a revenant forged from a slain innocent and bound to a ritual mask - an assassin from a rival family massacred the Järvis until he and Laurel disappeared in the deep, blue lake on the family estate. Years after the disaster, Laurel has found a place among the NOL as a Troubleshooter, harnessing her family's heirloom sword 'Rippling Edge - 'Suontaka'' -- as well as the unholy strength, resilience, and cold-eyed determination conferred by donning the Mourner's mask. Now forced to carry her family's future on her shoulders alone, the free-spirited young woman must learn to embrace the responsibilities she spent her life avoiding-- and bear the wrath coiled around her soul which screams for vengeance.
