Fuji - Of Troubled Soil

Description: Fuji illegally enters China and ventures to her old training grounds many miles southwest of Kunming. She finds a cold reception, and an even colder militant force hot on her heels. (Winner: Fuji)

Getting out of China was one thing-- She had much more difficulty getting in, even if she was a Chinese citizen. She had to stow away on a Chinese fishing boat and make the 2 day trek under the cover of night to blend in carefully with the other rustbuckets that permeated chinese consumerism. With China openly declaring war on the world, the borders were especially tight. Nothing got in, or out. The vessel was Chinese owned and had left Japanese waters only minutes before the war declaration was made.

Somehow, Fuji got the feeling not much had changed. She was sealed away in an ordinary barrel, and quietly rolled along customs in Shanghai, and several times along the way. She used every dollar she had being fed. She could only emerge between gates to use the bathroom, and changed boats once she got to Chouzhang. From there, She had a long, slow crawl through the Yangtze River on a much smaller ferry before she arrived deep within China, at the foot of the Tibetan Mountain range. A deep cloak graced the woman's form-- it adorned with little intricacies. She had asked for this intentionally. She knew she had otherwise had an exhorbitant way of dressing, so the cloak was needed to hide this. It was a part of her martial art that lead her to do this. It would be about a week of stowing away before she touched land again. She was mostly in the farm lands, a Straw Rice Picker's hat covering most of her facial features. She had to routinely stop and ask directions, but after a while-- steps began to feel familiar. She knew she was getting close. A small, well stocked and well taken care of village. She had done an excellent job trying to hide her Japanese Accent so far. She sniffed the air. Warm bread being cooked. She knew it would be only a mere hour's travel before she was there. The air was thick with dew. The brisk morning bringing the clouds low, for a rolling in fog. She reached into her pocket.

"One Steam Bun, please." She said, quietly placing a few coins to the table before her. Her legs were tired-- but her quest was only about to begin.

Fuji couldn't have picked a worse time for illegal immigration. China's borders were tighter than a bank vault; hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers marched up and down all the port towns with heavy artillery trailing behind them. Every where she went, she would be able to hear the heavy military boots of Shadaloo troops marching as they hurried to the front, the heavy scent of men sweating as they ran, the smell of metal from all the guns they carried, the distinctive scent of gun powder from their bullets all hanging in the air. As she went further and further inland, all this activity to die down leaving way to the sounds of nature. Once she neared the mountains, soldiers were scarcely heard as there was no big need to defend so deep within their own territory, allowing Fuji to hear birds chirping, the wind blowing and people casually chatting to each other.

But even a blind woman such as she would be able to clearly 'see' the tension that burdened these people. All their chatter could be summarized into two words; War and Vega. The two hottest topics in Chinese gossip.

Fuji's order was brought without complaint, but the curious waitress that was serving tables was very eager to chat with just about anyone that was within sight. "Where are you heading traveler? If I may ask."

The darkly dressed woman sniffed at the air. She was not staying-- this was merely an order to go. Still, the curious waitress that prodded at her, Fuji had to give some kind of reply to blend in. If she is cold about it, that will arouse suspicion. She kept her hat low. Remain dark, but be friendly. "...It is not often I am this way." she said. "...So I am here to visit an old friend who resides on the side of Mazhong Ridge." She said slowly. As the bun was packaged for her, Fuji seemed to pay little heed to the conversations around her. She received the package from the woman, and thanked her quietly. She turned to leave. She had been growing her hair-- but it was tucked under her cloak. She was trying her best to remain neutral so to keep levels of suspicion down. Kunming was a prefecture level city. It was beautiful and busy, but this village at the base of the mountain was serene and mostly quiet. She made a hasty exit from there, her only distinctive feature-- her cane was touching the ground, it underneath her cloak. She paced on for a few more hours. Steps. She could feel stone steps. She began to count them. She must have been close-- because they were steep-- just like she remembered. She hoped her master or even a pupil would be there to say hello, and make sure everything is alright.

The waitress sounded disappointed at the short response, but more than anything her voice had a worried tone to it. "Umm, no one goes there anymore. You probably don't want to..." Alas, before the waitress can try to persuade Fuji from continuing her quest, the blind woman was already gone to walk up the long steps leading to her old temple.

About halfway through, Fuji would already be able to tell that something was clearly wrong in the place that she once called home. Piercing through the smell of freshly rained ground, wood and trees was the unmistakable scent of smoke. As Fuji walked up further up another smell joined in; blood. And once she got to the very top of where her temple should be, it was too obvious now what the next smell would be.

Death.

Being blind, Fuji was mercifully spared the sight of her temple laying in charred ruins. Nothing but dust and cinder remained of the proud temple; buildings that Fuji knew where there where nowhere to be felt. Walls that she had once touched? Gone. A door she once remembered opening? Gone. People that she once spoke to? Also gone.

Everything she cared for was gone.

But there would be no time to mourn as a fourth scent joined the morbid scene. The smell of guns, followed by chatter and movement in the ground signaling people walking. Soldiers were coming her way.

Every step gave a near sickening feeling to Fuji's stomach. That precognition that something was going wrong. Each step became slower. When she finally reached the plateau, she had known exactly what had happened. She had smelled this scent before-- she caught it nearly 3 days prior in her travels. It wasn't just her home-- many other homes like her own, an institution of learning and a place of self control was now a hollowed carapace of what used to be there. her aspirations, her dreams, a place she would have stood to protect like her brothers and sisters...

...And here they still lay. Every step forward, her cane a guide-- as even the bodies could not be laid to rest properly. She found another set of familiar steps, and with it, she had to step over the bodies as they increased in numbers. Before she stood before her master, folded against the only non burned door like a paper crane. She knew his scent. She revelled in it. She loved his scent because it meant she was about to learn--

And yet she would learn nothing about this moment. She felt this urge burning deep within her Psyche. Hailing her. toiling her. Sorrow... Doubt... Many other ones. As she stepped forwards, she slowly lifted her master, and only put him aside, and pushed open the only unburnt door in the temple. When the Soldiers arrived, there would be nobody, except this one, unburnt door, which was now wide open.

Rage.

Without notice, The cloaked woman with the Chinese Hat had emerged from this door. She was wielding a polearm. She stepped back, and dug the butt of the pole into the ground.

"Leave, before I kill you all."

Amazing.

For a second or two, the Chinese patrol that had been sent to make sure the temple had been completely destroyed, couldn't tell if they were seeing the ghost of one of the students they killed. It was certainly plausible, to see a woman wielding a bladed polearm standing defensively before the one lonely unburnt door left from the temple, like a stubborn guard protecting the standing gate of a crumbled castle.

For a moment more, the soldiers didn't know what to do. People they could kill easily with their guns, but ghosts? What would will their rifles do against incorporeal spirits? Fortunately for them, a platoon always has a squad leader and this one in particular didn't believe in no ghosts!

"Drop the stick!" He ordered causing his men to train their guns upon Fuji. "Or it is you who will die!"

There were 29 spoiling, unburied bodies from this temple. This must have been number 30. The woman standing before so many, many guns didn't even seem to flinch. The woman shifted before them, and took a defensive stance. Instinctively, she started to keep track. She was outnumbered a great deal to one. She could sense their breath. 1... 2... 12, and the leader would be Thirteen? Each rifle pointed at her would see nearly the same thing as they seemed dug in on close formation with all their guns ready to fire. The rampant clicking of safety latches going off. With near Blinding Speed, She charged forward, and leapt high into the air, attempting to land between the Soldiers with enough force to knock many of them down...!

In truth, most of the soldiers hadn't even finished taking off the safety to their rifles before Fuji leapt at them. They were certain that no sane person would even dare charge at them with a spear when they had the number and firepower superiority. It was just for show, they didn't feel like killing anymore people, thirty unarmed monks was their quota.

But attack Fuji did, and she attacked well by jumping right in the center of them knocking a few down. The men screaming in pain and surprise as they whirled around with guns pointed at Fuji and squeezed the trigger.

"NO!!!" The platoon's captain yelled all too late "You'll shoot each other!"

And indeed, in their hurry to kill Fuji, the men shots threatened to hit each other.

Don't even begin to think Fuji is something even close to sane. When she jumped into the fray, she knew something like this would happen. She was ready to die. Bullets whipped by her head as the frantic soldiers shot at her. While many seemed to miss, one bullet grazed her shoulder, while a weak round caught her mid back. It didn't pierce her skin though, as in one smooth motion, the fighter had pulled the cloak up and off, and threw it in the face of a nearby soldier in attempts to disorientate them. She was wearing a plated chestpiece, which shielded the blast. It wasn't just that, though. Her important areas were all covered in armor plating. The Chinese hat she wore bore a few new ventilation holes, as she rushed towards the soldier who she had blinded. She was about to introduce him to the impaling end of her spear. None shall pass.

Her eyes lifted. "I will -KILL- you all...!" She was different. Cold. Vengeful. Murderous. The others gave their lives protecting the sacred. If she died here, she was taking them with her.

Much to the surprise of the Captain, the clumsy soldiers managed to hit the woman rather than shoot each other. But to follow up that surprise, the woman didn't go down and revealed that she was wearing an armored plate underneath her heavy cloak. This was as much an advantage to Fuji as it was for the captain, who now could talk his soldiers into fighting with all their might. "See!? See!? She's human! Now kill her!"

The blinded soldier tore Fuji's jacket off from his face noticing that indeed, the woman was wearing armor beneath and thus pointed her as human. Therefore, rather than cower away from her he heedlessly rushed in right at her and stabbed her with his bayonet, ramming himself on Fuji's spear in the process.

A valiant effort but ultimately fatal.

Maybe he should have run away after all.

The Bayonet found its way home, finding a way through the plates and digging into the woman's skin. It would have done much more damage had she not pushed the polearm away from her and forcing the soldier away from her. In this exchange of pushing the soldier off, she grabbed his rifle, and flipped it around as she pushed the soldier away. She held the gun as both a weapon and as a rifle, two hands holding the butt of the gun as she turned, and swung wildly towards the soldier's leader. Without them, they were nothing. She would strike at him multiple times in several arcs, using the rifle more like a sword than a gun. Until she pulled the trigger, that is.

The soldiers had reeled back in horror when one of their own needlessly sacrificed himself to land a hit on the woman. As Fuji suspected, it was up to the platoon captain to keep them all in line and he kept barking orders to his men. "Don't worry! Keep fighting! Keep--" *WHOCK!*

Then man's vision clouded as the butt of a rifle hit him right across his head, over and over and over again until he felt a round pierce his head. The pain that he had felt was over all too quickly as he fell backwards with brains splattering on the ground. Another death on this once sacred place.

"Captain!!" Though leaderless, the soldiers still felt the need to attack however clumsily they could, and all brought their bayonets upon Fuji, aiming to pierce her repeatedly for what she had done to their leader.

This brought her count up to at least 3 or so so, the dark haired woman's motions seemed extremely fluid for one person. It wasn't insanity that pushed her forward. It was knowing that the only place in the world that had accepted her for who she was was torn asunder and left to burn and rot. Their lessons. Their teachings. Their finer points of how to live. Everything Fuji ever wanted to fulfill her life...

It Now lay smoldering around her, with the forgotten bodies of her brethren. And these... monsters come and do it as a means of purifying the land. To eliminate any possible means of resistance or doubt within the country to the hands of the dictator. That was why she felt ushered out.

Almost all at once, these bayonets from the soldiers came lunging in at her one by one. Each one found nothing but air except the last one as Fuji had been avoiding them. She seemed to have near superhuman reflexes-- and was most likely going to be the last thing they ever saw again. The last blade came right at her-- and what'd she do? She punched the blade. It piercing her skin as it shattered, smashing the gun in it's entirety as she attempted a huge uppercut.

"...DIE!" Her very voice made even her tremble. She was a demon posessed. The dark should fear her.

The captain may have assured them she was a human and thus killable, but by the way she was moving the soldiers were starting to believe they were lied to. It was like trying to pierce the very wind around them, a soldier focused down trying to gut her with a practiced stab and hit nothing even at such a close proximity.

Then another soldier came, this one felt lucky, she was in his sights and wasn't trying to avoid him. In fact, it looked like she was coming right for him. Was she so eager to die that she would throw herself directly atop a bayonet?

Or maybe she was just insanely skilled and could literally break blades and guns with her bare fists. "N-No way! NGHH!!!" The soldier didn't have much time to be in shock at seeing his prized rifle shattered by a fists. His jaw was already getting slammed by a forceful uppercut that rocked his brain and sent him flying backwards.

This meant a change of strategy from a far more vicious soldier, who came from behind Fuji to wrap his rifle around her neck and pull her back in an attempt to restrain her. "Now! Kill her now while I hold her!!"

The last fighter of this temple was so carefully focussed on individually killing each soldier to further demoralize those who remained to wonder just how their death would look like. The dark haired woman smashed with the uppercut, but as she came down, a much-larger person than her grabbed a hold of her and held her back with a rifle being used as a strangulation device.

She was willing to let this happen. She pretended to struggle a little bit, she still holding onto the rifle. She pretended to get choked out here as she heard the soldiers ready up for a free blow at her midsection. She jerked, her left arm pulling the gun out from under her enough to where she could pull away. She still had a weapon, which she flipped, turning the blade side towards her.

And she swung. Hard. Maybe she should have done baseball instead.

And thus was born the legend of the blind baseball player.

Except not really. Fuji is a slippery fighter and breaks free from the soldier's hold but as she swings back to the soldier who was previously holding her, the young man manages to curl his arms up to protect the side of his head and take the blow on the bicep. It still pretty much incapacitates his arm, but at least he didn't get a nasty skull fracture. That may still come. "Auggh! My arm! Fucking cunt!"

Four down, but Fuji still had eight more to go if she wanted to escape this mess with her life. The remaining soldiers began to spread out to circle her and one came from her side, reloading quickly to shoot her on the thigh and cripple her mobility. She moved way too fast for that soldier's liking. That simply wouln't do.

The Hat she had been wearing was blown off at this time. She knew the soldiers were losing their cool. She was still vastly outnumbered. As they circled her? She let them. She stood there in a readied stance, and as the bullets shot at her, she endured it. All of it. She let them fire to their hearts content. Many of the bullets found their home into her flesh, but her tough skin just seemed to absorb the blows well, It being revealed that the woman was wearing sunglasses. The final bullet came for a final kill shot between her eyes.

And she caught it.

Between thumb and forefinger, she caught it, a blistering hot round meant for between her eyes was now pinched, waiting to be dropped. "Hah...." She said. then. She was beginning to break.

"Ha ha ha ha ha...!" her laughter grew ever the more crazy as she did this, most likely to the shock and horror of the soldiers. The bullet was placed between her thumb and middle finger. "Wanna play rough, do We...?" She asked. "Your turn... Catch!" She flicked the round back in the direction it came. And probably the same amount of speed, too.

Surely she was dead now, there was no way anyone could have survived blasts of that magnitude at such close range. The woman had been good, but bullets always beats fists.

Or does it!?

"Wh-WHAT!!?" The last soldier who had seen Fuji caught his bullet between her fingers damn nearly pissed his drawers right there and then. It dawned onto him that his platoon never had a chance against a woman who really didn't need an armor vest to withstand rifle shots. It would be his last thought as the bullet was flicked back to him going right through his head, killing him instantly.

"GRAAAAH!!" If Fuji thought that the soldiers had lost their cool before, wait until she gets a load of this guy. Out of sheer and utter desperation after what he just saw, one of the soldiers rips out a grenade from his vest and rushes directly to Fuji will still holding on to it. He knows that if they fail this mission they will all be court martialed, so what does anything matter anyway? There are some shouts from his companions of "No!! You're gonna kill us all!" But he doesn't care, he just wants this very very bad day to be over.

And again. She stood there. "Come at me." she said. She knew exactly what was going to happen. She trained for this. She would brace herself for this very moment in her training. The soldier ran right at her with a grenade, and when he came close, he may have gotten the most unnerving end to his life.

She smiled.

The explosion of shrapnel instantly killed the soldier holding the grenade, the shells of the blast digging into her skin, and the woman now had black pets dug in. She was hurting. She knew she was, but she wanted them to see something before she erased them all from their lifestyle.

Her will to exact revenge. As the smoke cleared, Fuji still remained grounded, pulling the shillings of the grenade out of her neck. She was bleeding now. Her breath was a touch harried. She turned. 7 Soldiers remained. "...Do you fear me...?" she asked then. She had dropped the gun. She was now unarmed. She had a good distance between her and the rest of the soldiers. Her left hand lifted, and she pulled her glasses off her face, the armor she was wearing appeared to take the brunt of the explosion. Her grey eyes. Dead, glazed grey eyes. Like staring at death itself. She threw them towards someone-- and in a near blinding amount of speed, she had caught them-- on her face. Her Arm was glowing. "REPENT...!" She ordered. She was moving so fast that if a camera was recording it, it would catch nearly 7 of Fuji trying to hit a squad all at once. "...SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT.....!"

What was that woman made of!? That is a question the rest of the squad would like to know, as yet another one of their fellows sacrifices himself to bring the woman down only to see their comrade explode into bloody bits whilst Fuji still stands!

It is nothing short of frustrating, downright infuriating even. Why isn't she dead!? After all their efforts she should be dead!

When Fuji turns into a blurry whirlwind of destruction, the men finally being to realize that no matter what they did they wouldn't be able to defeat this woman. But just as the thought of surrendering crosses their mind, Fuji makes one little tiny mistake.

Do they fear her? Do they??

Surprisingly, the battered, bloodied men only manage to smile. "Woman.." One of them coughs out blood and looks up. "The only thing we fear....is Shadaloo!!"

What Fuji does to them is but a mercy of what will happen if they come back to base empty handed. Death is a far better fate than to be left at their hands. They have nothing to lose, their lives have long being forfeit. It is why all seven men take their grenades off their belts and rush at Fuji at the same time.

In a fantastic explosion, all Seven men killed themselves in some sort of freakish suicidal rampage. The very instant the soldiers came at her, she braced for the impact. Just when they were within distance, the grey eyed woman jumped up and out of the way, pulling her arms and legs tight into a ball and absorbing the remnants of the shrapnel. She was bleeding. She spent nearly 20 minutes pulling shrapnel out of her legs. It was a good thing she had another suit inside. This one was torn, bloody, and dirty. She'd spend the next hour gaining her energy, cleaning herself and her wounds at a nearby pond like she had done all those years prior, get changed, and get to digging.

It would take the woman nearly 5 days of continuous digging to bury all those she once cared and loved for, plus give even her enemies a burial. Once she was done, she burned the rest of the temple down, destroying the secrets her master and her brethren fought to protect. She had to leave. She wouldn't be able to go back the same direction she came. They'd be after her. Without a second thought, she trekked deeper into the mountains, and headed west. China meant nothing to her now. The only thing that mattered now was seeing to it that this monster machine be crushed.

...What is Shadoloo?
