A man surfs, cresting a majestic wave. This is not odd. What /is/ odd his attire; fishnets, dark tabi, baggy pants, certainly not improved by the moisture. And raised overhead is a sword, as he waits to come down with the wave and smash into his foe.
As he comes down, though, his sword falls short, a fist in his ribs. A fist connected to one Shinobu Ootsuka. He flies off his longboard, crashing back into the surf, as a number of other ninjas, some with shortboards strapped to their backs, go to see to him. "Sensei!", one cries out.
Shinobu wags her hand, shaking out her knuckles, and sighs, her socks and shoes wet with saltwater and sand. Letting out a deep sigh, she mumbles, "... surf ninjas. I thought you'd be cooler..."
Meanwhile, walking along the beach is a blonde-haired woman in a rather unusual looking red outfit. A pair of dark sunglasses cover her face as she walks along the beach, her shoes and socks in her hand. All the while, numerous people are following her, eager to get an autograph from her.
Who is this woman? It's none other than Maki Genryusai, a runner-up in the Neo League and a very well known fighter on the circuit. Even with the sunglasses on and with her shoes off, Maki is still recognizable thanks to her unique attire.
As Maki gets closer to where Shinobu is, she pauses and watches, taking her sunglasses off to get a better look at it. "What the hell?" Maki asks, raising an eyebrow.
Shinobu turns about, walking away as she folds her arms behind her head, and then one of the 'students', his face covered by a Kendo mask, says, "I won't let you just walk away!" Lowering her arms, Shinobu starts to turn as the man rushes her with a kunai...
But tripping, she falls forward, and he lunges forward over her, as she starts to roll over, flip forward, and then lands on his back with two feet, stomping on him with an almost undeliberate nature. "Ew, sand.", she says, shimmying as she walks, and then looks towards Maki, raising her fists. "So, you want to..."
Trailing off, she tilts her head, though, as if struck by a bout of confusion.
As soon as Maki notices Shinobu staring at her, the blonde-haired ninja looks at the girl and asks, "What are you looking at? Are you supposed to be some kind of travelling stunt show or something?" A slight smirk forms on Maki's face, although she's trying hard not to show it.
As she puts her socks and shoes back on, Maki looks at Shinobu and then adds, "Don't tell me that you're actually training these students. As a master of my style, I am good at spotting a real martial artist and a martial artist wannabe." She folds her arms, and then adds, "Surely you've heard of me, right?"
"I think I fought you?", Shinobu says, folding her arms and rolling her eyes in though. "Hmm... no. You'd remember me, I think!", she says aloud. "Well, after I beat you, hehe...", she says with a sharp smile, though there's a hint of a joke in there.
"But I don't even think they're real ninjas. Also fighting on surfboards is pretty cool but..." She goes to brush off some more sand, looking annoyed. "Anyway, I think we were supposed to fight in Neo League? But I think there was a hurricane." Smiling, she seems to shrug it off, before going back to the business of shaking sand off her uniform.
"Wait, you THINK you fought me?" Maki asks, cocking an eyebrow as she steps towards Shinobu. "You don't even know who I am?" Maki glares even harsher at Shinobu. "I am Maki Genryuusai, a master of the Bushin-Ryu style martial arts. I was also the fourth place winner in the Neo League, so don't make the Neo League sound like it's nothing!"
"And what's this about a hurricane? That's news to me." The tone is a little sarcastic since it sounds like Maki's not buying Shinobu's story. "So what exacly is this you're doing? Trying to start a new fad or something? Because honestly, it stinks!"
Looking away, Shinobu shrugs a little. "Whatever, styles never meant much to me." She puts her hands on her hips, smiling. "Hey, it's okay, I was in the first Neo League, it was pretty fun..." Her smile dampens a bit. "... but hey, it's not /my/ fault if you don't remember."
And a confused look. "Fad? What are you even talking about? And it doesn't stink! Whatever it is that you're talking about." She leans back, now almost to an outright frown.
"I wasn't saying it was anyone's fault," Maki says with a sneer. "And this fad I'm referring to is the way you're teaching these ninja-wannabes how to fight on surfboards! This is ridiculous, this is not what fighting is about!" She scowls darkly. "Trust me, I've seen Mad Gear goons who can fight better than them!"
Instinctively, Maki draws her tonfa, although it's not to fight, but rather as a method of self-defense should the need arise. "Seriously, what's with your attitude? We may have been in the Neo League together, but what does it matter?"
"Ehhhhh? I'm not a sensei? I'm not teaching them! Except how to lose, maybe." Shinobu brings up a fist in response to the tonfa. "I just asked for people to fight! I didn't know they were lame!", she adds definively.
"And you asked how I knew you, from the Neo League. Like, your crinkly hair and stick and- I didn't know anything about your school!"
She pouts again, looking irritated, but seems to shake it off pretty quickly. "Attitude?", she says, straightening up. "Just making up a fancy name for how you fight doesn't make it a big deal, you know..."
"Did you say I have crinkly hair and wield a STICK?!" Maki glares daggers at Shinobu now. "Just who the hell do you think you are?!" Her teeth show just enough to see that she's gritting them. "What the hell is with you and your attitude, girl? And let me tell you, the attitude is not about how I fight, it's about how you're treating me!"
Shinobu furrows her brow. "Umm-" She leans forward, as if examining Maki for a moment. "Um. Have I lied, or something? I... attitude?" Scratching her head, she adds, "I mean, I'm just telling the truth, right?" She looks more than a touch bewildered. "If I didn't like you or something, I'd call you something mean. Or punch you."
She looks down, though, at her shoes, and crouches, taking them off and starting let the water drip out.
"You'd punch me? YOU would punch me?" Maki folds her arms and laughs. "Seriously, do you think you could even land a punch against me? Not only would you fail to connect, but you would find yourself hit really hard and be crying to your mother!" Apparently, Maki thinks that this girl is an amateur out of her league. "And you've been honest, I'll give you that, but calling me something mean won't do any good. I've endured so many insults in one lifetime that it's nothing to me."
She turns to face Shinobu and looks at her socks. "I mean, I haven't made any comments about your socks smelling, have I?" She smirks a little.
"Don't get a big head because four is a bigger number than two.", Shinobu says sourly, pulling off her socks. Tucking them loosely into her shoes, she stands up. "Or, wait, is it the other way around...?", she muses, tracing a circle in the sand with her toe for a moment. "I mean, in tournaments, the lower number is better, right?" She lowers her chin, giving Maki a more genuinely irritated glare. "I think it is."
"Now just WHO has a big head?!" Maki replies angrily. "I never said anything about four being better than two..." She pauses for a second, then looks again at Shinobu. "Wait, where the hell did two come from?! Last I checked, that big goon known as Raiden was the second place winner for this year's Neo League." Maki spins her tonfa around. "Seriously, I hope you're not challenging me to a fight, because I will NOT hold anything back!"
"I didn't fight in this year's. I fought in the first year." Shinobu starts to walk past, rolling her eyes. "I haven't fought in one since..." She looks over her shoulder. "... whatever, fight me if you want." She puts a finger in her ear, as if trying to clean it. "Fighters shouldn't ever hold back, anyway. That's part of being a fighter, right?"
"All right, if that's what you want." Maki adjusts her tonfa and then looks at Shinobu, getting into her fighting stance. "You will regret this, though. Your attitude is what sparked this whole thing!" She stands tall, watching Shinobu to see what she's going to try.

"I'm not making you fight...", Shinobu says in almost a whine. "... just fight for the sake of fighting. Fighting for that reason-" She makes a fist, sliding her foot forward. "- isn't going to help you win!" Then, swinging a hand back, moisture and chi gather in her hand in a bluish, flowing ball of energy.
Then, hopping up into the air, she flings the ball up a short height, and then spikes it down towards the ground with her palm. Hitting the ground, it explodes- detonating out in spray of sand and energy. "Haaaa!", she shouts as she lands, wobbling a bit in seeming unbalance.

"You're right, we should definitely fight for the purpose of that!" Maki replies, bringing her tonfa in front of her forearm while placing one atop the other as the chi comes at her. The block is good, it absorbs the blast and keeps Maki from getting hurt, although it does kind of hurt a little. "Not bad," Maki comments to herself, "Although I think I could've defended a little better."
"So, you're a projectile user huh? I never got into those really, but it doesn't really matter!" Maki jumps into the air and does a somersault before bringing her sneaker down towards Shinobu's head.

It seems, for a moment, like it might connect; Shinobu's got a clumsy stance from her leap, but at the last moment she brings up her right arm, forcing herself into the kick to knock it aside. "Eh? It's not really something I've practiced or anything...", she says, before grinning. "This, though, I have!"
Leaning in to try and break into her personal space, Shinobu lashes out with a low, quick straight punch... before curling her fist into a "one inch", short-distance strike. "Haaaaata!"

Shinobu takes the hits, her shoulder and skull battered for a moment, and she wobbles for a moment. "That was just one punch, you know... I've got a lot more than that!" And, aiming to stay in Maki's space, she brings up her left fist. "Try... these!
And in a blur, she throws out punch after punch from her left arm in a wild, hurried flurry. It's more quantity than quality, aiming just overwhelm the ninja. "Yaayayayayayayayaayayayaaa!", she shouts, trying to at least see one land.

Each and every punch is deflected away, either by Maki's hand or her tonfa. Of course it makes her arms sore again, but what does she care? All that matters is that she's protected herself against Shinobu. In fact as the last punch comes in, Maki attempts to grab it and throw Shinobu over her shoulder.

Flipped overhead, Shinobu is slammed to the ground, sand spraying up. No quip this time, thoughn, as she focuses on recovery - and reaches out to Maki's leg as she does so, looking to roll up and yank Maki down, or at least put her off-balance enough to return to her feet.

Maki sees what Shinobu is attempting to do, and attempts to jump away, but embarassingly she fails... and falls flat on her face. She lets out an 'ouch!' and then rolls sideways to get back up onto her feet and scowl at Shinobu. "Cheap hit... real cheap!" Maki comments as she attempts to strike Shinobu in the side with her tonfa.

Shinobu stands up, and shimmies sand off before catching the tonfa in a palm. Hurts, but a lot less than if she took in the side. The clumsiness is a bit faded from her motion, as if the battle was giving her a bit more clarify. "Oh. I see.", she says simply.
Quickly moving back into a crouch, she then springs forward in a hop. "SHINOBU-", she cries, before just slamming out a straight kick, all forward power to the ball of foot until a traditional flying kick. "- KICK!"

Maki thinks she can take any sort of attack if she can see it coming, but unfortunately she messes up and finds herself on the ground again. A few grunts and then she pushes herself back up. "Damn, that was real stupid of me," Maki thinks to herself as she takes a few breaths to clear her mind.

With that, she lashes out with a swift, starting strike, leaning in like a snake and snapping back. "Yaa!", she kiais, keeping her fists up as she sways up straight.

However, she twists her arm a little at the same time and she ows. "Damn, what did I do wrong?" Maki grumbles to herself before staring at Shinobu again. "So, let me show you something, huh?" Maki jumps onto a nearby object, then literally flies at SHinobu with her foot outstretched like a swift flying kick!

Clapping her hands together, her palms flicker with blue waves of energy, and she slides out her feet in an dramatic exhalation. "Sorry, I shouldn't make you wait like this, it's kind of lame.", she then adds, breaking her serious tone.

As Maki comes in, Shinobu goes to grab the tonfa, but it slips out of her grasp, beaning her upside the head as she tumbles back, stumbling. "Ow.", she manages, squinting an eye. "That wasn't... huh?" She mumbles, "Go away, birdies, I don't have time to fight you at the same time..."
"Birdies?" Maki can't help but laugh. "Oh come on, you really believe in those spinning around your head?" Maki shakes her head. "This isn't a cartoon you know!" She stands by idly, waiting to see what Shinobu does next.

Shinobu rubs her head, slapping her cheeks, and brings her fists to bear again. "Don't worry, birdies, I believe in you.", she says in seeming seriousness. "I thought I had you there... using that farm tool is pretty clever! Like a ninja!"
Then, she moves forward, taking in a deep breath before then taking a long step forward and slamming out both fists at once in a pair of snap punches. "Haya!"

Maki thinks she can take Shinobu, but she's wrong. Her attempt to kick Shinobu away backfires as her timing is way off, and she gets knocked away. "Oof..." She mutters, holding her head in pain.
Shinobu slides out into a horse stance, resting her right hand on her knee as she breathes. "That's what you get for making fun of them!", she says, and reaches out to grasp a handful of sand, before rubbing her hands together as it falls through. "And it's not over yet! My water element is strong here!"

"Is that so?" Maki says as she forces herself back up. "Well, I apologize if I offended you, but that's the way fights are sometimes." Maki then attempts to jump into the air and perform a one-eighty in the air and grab Shinobu by the neck. If successful, she'll flip over and throw Shinobu onto the ground.

As Maki leaps in, Shinobu starts to gather up the watery chi, just like before... only... no, that ball is getting much bigger, starting to spin, and almost seeming to exert its own gravity. "FINAL-" It's enough to throw an attack off as it pulls Maki in- " -FINISH."
Then a dull, resonant THUD, like a tremendous impact goes off, as the ball detonates, fluid sounds leaking out in the aural impact as mist drifts out in its wake. Shinobu slides back with recoil, but stays on her feel, wagging her hands as if shaking off a sting. "Ah, I hope she fell down..."
Maki does land on the ground, she fell down hard. But even a hard landing impact isn't enough to keep Maki from going after Shinobu one last time. "You call that a finish?" Maki says weakly as she stands up again. "I'll show YOU a finish!" Maki takes a deep breath and begins to gather her chi... then rushes at Shinobu, attempting to deliver a series of strikes and kicks.

Shinobu narrows her eyes, taking a breath. "Okay.", she says dully, before them reaching forward. The kick from Maki almost lands, as Shinobu blocks it, using its upward momentum to vault, and then as the punch follows, she clamps onto Maki's wrist.
Then, she whips her legs over Maki's arm, spinning on it as both legs swing out at head level, both hitting, and she twirls into a clumsy landing, half-crouched. "I guess that isn't the finish you wanted, though.", she adds between labored breaths.
Maki rolls in a clumsy manner, landing in a semi-crouched position. She looks up at Shinobu and says, "Looks like you got lucky this time..." And then lowers her head, closing her eyes...

But then she looks up again and then jumps back onto her feet, a sudden blast of energy surging through her body. "Or not! I'm not done just yet!" She looks beaten and bruised, but looks ready to keep fighting nonetheless.
"Eh?", Shinobu says, and then blinks. "Oh, well, neither am I, you know...", she says in quiet protest, before moving in. She seems to sway to one side, as if almost about to fall over, and then snaps in from the other direction, a swift jab. "HAI!"

"Still going?" Maki asks as she watches Shinobu drop to the ground... but then notices that she seems to be waking up again. "I'll wait for you..."

A little Xiangfei pops up in her head, and Shinobu parrots, "I keep it real!" A wide smile emerges despite the pain, as she rubs her head. "Ahehe..."

Shinobu slaps a hand down to the sand, catching the kick as she springs back, then wags her hand. "Owowowow..." She grins wickedly. "Okay- that sounds great!", she says, starting to move forward, but suddenly starts to wobble, her feet going out as one slips out on the sand. She falls, her head coming down towards Maki's, an unintentional headbutt flying towards her head. "W-whooaaaaa!"

Unintentional or not, Maki's not having it. She steps back and then scowls. "That was supposed to hurt me? Please!" Maki twirls her tonfa a few times and then says, "Come on, you can do better than that!" While grabbing a nearby bottle of water and downing it.

Shinobu manages to land on a hand, and then swings her body just inches off the sand before whipping her leg out in a wide sweep, saying, "You said please!", as she sprays out sand with the force of the low kick. Not subtle, but certainly has reach.

Not good enough for Maki as she jumps over the kick, meaning it misses her completely, and when she hits the ground, she goes into her next attack. She spins around and around again like the human whirlwind she can be!

Spun about with the hit, Shinobu is too tired and slow to block it, but... she then lands, before doing a handplant and doing a low, Capoeira-style low kick in what would be a blur, were it not for her exhaustion. Like going through a kata in rote, she inverts, whipping out in a blur of blue energy as she does it upside down again, and helicopter kick, before then inverting again and twisting about in a fast, if still staggered mule kick.

And with that, Shinobu twirls, dizzy, and starts to fall right on over.
The attack was forced and exhausting to Shinobu most likely, and down she goes, with bystanders most likely rushing in to help her. As for Maki, she's knocked down, but doesn't pass out. She somehow gets herself back up. "That was a good fight," Maki comments. "I'll remember this next time." A slight smirk. "Maybe we'll meet up with each other again sometime.
