Mizuki - First Meetings

Description: A young boy from Chian spots a young woman from Japan, teaching kids how to defend themselve. Is it love at first fight? Naah. But it is educational!

Japan! A strange and mysterious land full of wonder and excitement!

It is in this strange and foreign place that Yuno has found himself, on his travels. He intends to journey to Southtown, where he hears there are many talented fighters, and, he believes, few better places to begin his quest. However, the journey isn't exactly the quickest to make when you have few ways of getting access to modern travel methods, and so, the young chinese monk has found himself in a small, somewhat secluded village. Quiet and out of the way, they rarely got visitors. Not, of course, that they are complaining too much about the young bald kid who has found his way into the tea shop, and settled down.

He does get his share of odd looks, however, even if he does just reply to them with a bright smile and a nod of acknowledgement. He seems oblivious to how... out of place he looks, in his bright clothing and with his shining head, in the middle of this quiet, subdued locale.

Mizuki Kamigawa has been... distracted.. as of late. Practically disappeared from her home, Southtown, out of contact with her friends, teammates, and colleagues... she's taken a sabbatical, of sorts. Not much contact with the outside world. Maybe it seems strange, having a midlife crisis at the tender age of seventeen. It probably is strange. But it is basically what's happened to her.

Of course her family knows where she is--she wouldn't trouble them so--but she's not been at home, either. Instead, she's been... teaching. At a dojo. Nothing important, nothing big. Just self-defense, taught in a simple dojo, by the redheaded miko, to a group of enthusiastic children. The beautiful day has her teaching the class outside--just finishing it, actually--the kids bowing to her before shrieking and running out of the dojo's front yard, as kids will do.

She watches them with amused affection, but there's something else lurking behind her eyes...

Suddenly, Yuno becomes aware of noises outside the teashop!

Namely, the sound of excited children. He knew it well, but, usually, because he was in the thick of it, not because he was hearing it as an observer. It's a strange surprise, and, as he turns to look outside of the tea shop, he catches sight of the children, and their instructor. And that brings a brighter smile to his face. Because, although he was by no means an expert, he recognized that her clothing was both religious... and modified to be more suitable for fighting! Which makes Mizuki pretty much the coolest person he has seen in Japan so far.

The boy drains his tea quickly, and then leaps into action, bouncing out of the shop with a jingle of metal on metal, and jangling his way through the crowd of excited youngsters. He is grinning from ear to ear, and waves, excitedly, over towards Mizuki. "Hi! Hello!--WOW! Hey! Haha, watch out! HI!" He calls, trying to dodge his way through the crowd of children, with only moderate success as he is jostled repeatedly en route, the bald boys excitement clear to behold.

Mizuki blinks, once, seeing Yuno work his way through the crowd of children. "Kids!" she calls, her voice pitched to give mild reprove. "Let the young man through, please." It isn't magic, but they do stop jostling him--of course, that's because most of them are already out the gate. Mizuki puts on her best smile and bows to Yuno.

"I'm sorry about that. They -are- just children..." Lifting her head, her blue eyes travel Yuno's form, her lips pursing just slightly. Of course, she's got a lot of distance to go, herself... but the signs are unmistakable--and she doesn't just mean the weapon on his pack, though that certainly is a big sign.

There's an aura that fighters have. Alma would probably be able to describe it fully--Mizuki can only sense it vaguely. But it's undeniably there.

"So, how can I help you, young man?"

Yuno smiles brightly up at Mizuki, and, as she bows, he does the same, going a touch lower, perhaps, out of deference to her age, and, as a teacher, likely her superiority. If, of course, she was actually an instructor. The signs were there- the respect of the children, and the fact she had come out of a dojo, but, he could just be leaping to unwarranted conclusions never worked out well.

"Ah, it is no problem!" He replies, quickly. "My name is Yuno." He continues, straightening up so he can look up into Mizuki's eye, if there had been any doubt at all of his motives, then, they are likely dispelled instantly. He gives another little bow, obviously a touch overexcited.

"I am a traveler, and I can't help but notice that you ... look like you walk a similar path, the path of the warrior. I was wondering if we could spar? I am looking to hone my talents, and I would very much like to test myself against you."

He's not -quite- bouncing on the spot, but, it isn't far from that. He was still trying to maintain some dignity, but, it was hard. He didn't see many other people in that style of clothing, let alone those people in that style of clothing... who were also fighters. It was terribly exciting.

She wouldn't consider herself a 'sensei'--but she does instruct, occasionally. Simple things. How to punch, how to kick. Nothing more than self defense. Yuno's deference to her... she blushes faintly.

"Please, I'm still a student at heart, myself," she says, guessing at the reason for his bowing. He did get several things right, though, her lips pursing as she studies the young man. Kentou Ondori immediately comes to mind; she smiles.

"You remind me of a friend. Aa... I am trained in the martial arts. Whether I truly stride the path of the warrior... that is yet to be seen." Turning, the redheaded girl walks into the dojo.

Over her shoulder, she says, "You may leave your pack just inside the door, it will be safe there." An indication of agreement? It must seem like it...

Yuno is indeed going to take it as an indication that his challenge is accepted! He smiles brightly, and gives a quick nod. "Well... a wise man once told me that there is no man who is not a student, in another's eyes." He replies, easily. Not at all put off by her sincerity, he moves to take off his pack, and set it down inside the door of the dojo, though he soon replaces his staff on his back, for the moment, though he does follow her into the dojo, and maintains a respectful distance. He was, after all, a visitor here.

"He also said that, in life, we all walk the same path... but some choose to call it by other names." He adds, giving a little laugh at that, "I... don't think I really understand everything he meant by that, but, then, I don't think I really understand most of the things he told me." With a shrug, he claps his hands together excitedly, eyes sparkling as he looks up to her.

"Thank you, though! Ah... may I know your name?"

"That man was wise indeed. There are few who consider themselves masters, and fewer still who are true masters." The redhead turns, already dressed in fighting garb, as he could see; she notes that he fights in his own traveling garb. A common thing amongst wandering warriors. She's noted the staff, too--has had some practice with it, herself... she smiles faintly.

"I used to wield a staff... though I was armed with a short staff." Ah, how things change... she shakes her head just a little. "My apologies, I should have introduced myself. My name is Mizuki. Kamigawa Mizuki. I actually live in Southtown, but... I've been away for a while." With that, she takes her stance, a traditioanl fighting pose save for open hands.

"As you are the guest here, Yuno-kun, I invite you to start when you are ready..."

Yuno seems pretty excited, giving yet another bow to the girl, he straightens quickly, and removes the staff from his back, holding the three sections together in his right hand. "I see... well, after we're done, I'd like to hear why you decided to move away from that!" He declares, brightly. "I find the additional reach is very useful, but, ah, anyway... thank you, Mizuki. It is an honor."

The boy settles into a low, crouched stance, and makes sure that Mizuki is ready, before, suddenly, he swings into action.

The staff is surprisingly long, something he definitely does use to his advantage, as the weapon blurs, and he brings it around in a simple, sweeping strike. Aiming to batter the furthest section against Mizuki's side, before the momentum is diverted to bring it back into his hand, holding the top and bottom tight, and stretching it between his hands, one leg raised, and ready... interested to see how she would react.

The range is deceptive; she'll have to remember that. She falls back, intending to force a miss--but instead, Yuno's staff strikes into her abdomen, causing a wince of pain; her body bends around the weapon, for a momen. But the pain isn't anything she hasn't felt before; she inclines her head to the young man, and then she moves, herself.

Her steps are quick, bringing her up to full speed in moments, and then she practically hops--flying along the ground without having to use her feet.

Of course, she's aimed right for Yuno, and she comes to a halt, stopping her movement by planting her feet. All that momentum travels up her legs, into her hips, into her shoulders... and then is redirected into her arms, as she thrusts them forward into a dual palm strike, aimed for Yuno's chest--striking high and low at the same time.

She utters a kiai as she attacks, but otherwise is silent; she's not here to critique Yuno, and any and all praise will come at the end of the fight.

As Mizuki comes in, Yuno's stance shifts ever so slightly. His staff slightly shifting in his grasp, when the palms come in for him, he steps forwards, and with a sudden /thrust/, the middle section is sent rocketing forwards, slamming heavily across both palms, and knocking them to the side, before he brings the weapon back up and around, his footing is very solid, now, and the young boy is crouched low, the staff forming a metal bar between himself and his opponent.

He exhales slowly, sweat dripping down his forehead. That had been close! He could tell, if he had been a moment slower, he would have been struck very painfully indeed. Out of respect, however, he doesn't say anything else. He was far too focused on the fight right now, though all the energy that had been displayed so exuberantly before, is now trembling in his arms, focused intently.

For the second time in the exchange--and the second part of the exchange--Mizuki is staggered, knocked back. She... shows no emotion at all, beyond what she was showing before--tightly controlled, her options running through her mind. The boy is skilled, she can tell; it's a good thing he didn't come here asking for help. She isn't sure she could. Reassess, Mizuki, she tells herself. Think. What can you do, how can you move around his defenses?

The answer comes immediately, of course--whether it is the /right/ answer for the question at hand, that question being Yuno, she doesn't know. All the while she's been thinking, she's been moving--backwards, a step at a time--and then she stops.

Twisting forward, she slashes her right hand through a backhanded slicing motion--creating a bright arc of blue-white energy, frosty, icy chi. That line soon extends, taking on the appearance of a long, thin shard of frost-covered glass--aimed to take Yuno right in the chest.

It exists for only a fraction of a moment, before it seems to shatter into flinders of nothingness.

Yuno's eyes go a little wider when he realizes what is happening. It takes him a split second to realize that the bright arc is coming at him, formed into a long shard of ice, the boy reacts on instinct. With a sudden snap, the staff locks together, all three of the sections locking into one far longer, far stronger staff. He dances back a step, twirling the staff as he goes, and, suddenly, thrust it forwards. A bright burst of orange fire travels the distance of the staff, and shoots out at the last possible moment, to slam into the ice shard. The result is that the shard bursts apart, smaller, thinner shards fly out in all directions, one cutting through the hem of his robes.

The boy is breathing harder, sweat trickling freely down his features now, but, he is still smiling, a bright and happy grin on his features. "Wow, that was close!" He declares, giving a short little laugh, "Y-You almost got me!"

Blue eyes narrow, as she gazes at the young man. Her opinion of him is changing... bit by bit. If her 'performance' in the fight is any indication... this could go on for a while. Already she's moving, though, behind her attack, sidestepping the length of the staff, avoiding any danger of being struck by the counterattack.

And then she stops, planting her left leg--twisting around on the ball of her foot, kicking outward, seeking to connect the flat of her foot with the boy's temple. Once upon a time she protested such attacks--felt they were dangerous.

Now she knows better. Fighting, in any form, -is- dangerous. Attempting to enforce artificial rules about where to hit and not hit... is not going to help anyone get better at fighting in the 'real world'...

Yuno is a little surprised by the narrowed eyes that focus on him. Somehow, he suddenly felt like he'd failed a test. It isn't a particularly nice feeling. It is one, however, which solidifies his resolve. The blow comes in, and his staff comes up to meet it. If he is concerned about the brutality of a blow to the head, he doesn't say anything, and he certainly doesn't look perturbed. He's quite used to this kind of all-out sparring.

He's just... not smiling any more.

Suddenly, his whole movement changes. The weapon is brought around, and this time, there is a definite, palpable shit towards the offensive. Where before he had been defensive, and attempting to use his momentum to keep him safe from her... now, he is pouring himself forwards in an attempt to land a strong, powerful blow.

The staff is swung around with a sudden, brutal force behind it. Both hands positioned low on the weapon, the boys entire weight is put into one, powerful, arcing swing at her midsection.

It's a moment of miscalculation... for Yuno. The attack is powerful, indeed; Mizuki, however... is ready. It's a moemnt of clarity, as she sees the weapon incoming. Her movement is quick, decisive; she moves in, and /towards/ the weapon... throwing herself into a moving thrust-block. The impact is powerful still... but far less than she would have taken had the proper striking area hit.

And it puts her in position, ushing her body to shove the weapon off-balance. "The problem with a staff, Yuno-kun," she says, mildly, "is that it's very easy to overextend." Okay, she told herself she wouldn't do this... but it's in her blood, she can't help it. Even as she's speaking, she's sweeping her hands up--and her chi flares to life, blue-white and icy cold, washing over Yuno's body in a roiling cloud that dissipates just a few feet later.

The blow sends Yuno staggering backwards, the ice is painful, and burns into him with a cold, gnawing bite. The freezing blast ends with him stumbling backwards, his breath catching in his throat. He can't really help but be amazed. To turn his own attack against him like that! It was an amazing display, and he takes what she says very seriously. It was, indeed, true that one of the problems with the staff was that, when committed to an attack, it was difficult to react to a situation if it changed mid-blow. He smiles, and it is a smile full of genuine respect.

"Thank you, Mizuki...-sama?" He tries, not really used to Japanese suffixes, but he gives it a shot anyway. "There are ways around that problem, though, like..."

And suddenly, he is surging forwards. He gives it everything he has, throwing himself forwards, the staff is a buzzing circle behind him as he works it up into a thrumming, humming cyclone, orange fire dancing up and around the circle, for an instant, it looks like he is backed by a bright orange disc of light.

And then, suddenly, he thrusts the staff forwards, the entire weapon burning with orange power... if all has gone according to plan, then the weapon is jabbed square into Mizuki's gut, before, suddenly, the energy rushes forwards...

And there is a thunderous /ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR/, as though a mighty dragon had backed the blow itself. It doesn't come from Yuno, mysteriously, but, instead, is the noise that the blast of energy makes as fire rushes to engulf Mizuki from head to toe.

"Don't call me that. I'm not someone you should call by that honorific. I am not your superior," she says--quickly. And she proves it in the next moment--as Yuno plants his staff right into her gut--and triggers a massive explosion of chi. The explosion blows her away--sends her flying across the dojo, slamming her into the wall. There she remains, for a moment, before peeling off of the wall, landing on her knees, coughing. The pain... surges.

But she can deal with the pain. Resolutely, she pushes herself up, from her knees, bent over nearly in half. Panting. And then she's concentrating. Her chi flares, almost invisibly... then visibly, a stormcloud flashing into existence above her... raining blue-grene energy, thin droplets streaking down like water, to pour down onto her body. The effects are not immediately visible--but she rises up, straightens her body nonetheless...

"It isn't over yet, Yuno-kun... but you're doing very well... you've shown me that you're quite the fighter already..."

As Mizuki straightens up again, Yuno watches with fascination. He had never seen anything like that before, and it takes him by complete surprise. The boy shakes his head slowly, and exhales, tired. He'd packed far too much of himself into that attack... but, at least it had seemed to have the desired effect. Now, if only he could get the burning out of his lungs as much as he had expelled it from his staff, he might be able to see this through to the end.

The boy breaks his staff again, and settles back into that low, crouched stance. On the defensive, he focuses on his breathing, slowly breathing in, and out. He recuperates too, though, in a more traditional manner than Mizuki, if, indeed, that was what she was doing... he honestly had no idea, and half expected her to throw some horrible blast at him in an instant.

"Thank you, Mizuki...?" He replies, his smile returning easily, even if he didn't know what he was supposed to call her. "I do my best, and... you are very good, as well. That last attack... it was masterfully delivered."

"There was a time when I would have stopped the fight, there." Her voice sounds almost distant, as though she were talking to herself or to someone else. "But now I recognize that this... that each fight... is as much a test of myself as it is of my opponents. That I need to strain myself, stretch myself... not only physically. Emotionally, as well. To toughen my resolve."

Her eyes clear and she fcouses on Yuno again. Opening her mouth, as if to speak... instead she lunges forward again, this ime with a more balletic motion; as she closes in, she skips forward, twisting in midair... and then striking, her left hand chopping out at Yuno's temple in a spinning knifehand chop. But she doesn't stop there; she continues to spin forward, competing the attack with a right ridgehand, stopping her spin there.

Yuno seems to approve of that. He strains to listen, and the boy nods as Mizuki explains herself. "That is very deep, Mizuki!" He replies, with a bright smile. He couldn't really look much more opposed to Mizuki's solemn and serious demeanor, but, he seems ... too full of energy to allow himself to get down about such things. Even if he was starting to feel the burn from the constant exertion he had needed to match her so far.

And, suddenly, she is on him! The first blow meets Yuno's head with a loud *thump*, and the boy stumbles back.

The second blow, however, he manages to get his staff in the way of, and he steps back for a moment, reevaluating his position swiftly... his decision is simple. She had taken advantage of the long reach of his weapon... so, his hands grasp the middle and top of the staff, and the bottom spins widely, lashing out in a simple, quick little strike, it likely wouldn't hurt too much... but it moves with surprising speed!

The quick strike is met with the heel of her hand; she didn't strike quite head on, and knowing that, she didn't commit heself fully to the followup attack. It lets her defend against the attack--deflecting the weapon out of the way. This is not just a test for Yuno, but for Mizuki, too. Her attitude in the past... was misguided. Now she knows where she stands... or sits... as the case may be. Her muscles burn with remembered pain, but she forges ahead--

--as she must. She gives no verbal warning of her plan, of her movements--only a quick reach with her left hand, seeking to grab Yuno's right arm--and to yank it out of position, away from him. If that happens, then she'll deliver a series of three chopping knifehand blows to Yuno's ribcage, her hand flaring with chi, adding a cold addition to each impact.

There is no hardness in her face--steel, yes, but hardness, no...

Yuno is taken by surprise when his move is deflected, and though he tries to twist it around, to throw the weapon forward in the practiced motions that would result in a rather... painful experience for Mizuki, he just can't manage it. The grab snares around his arm, and though he fights it, Mizuki turns out to be the stronger of the pair. There's nothing he can do to defend himself.

For a moment, his eyes go wide...

"HNGK!"

And then three blows slam firmly into his ribcage, the chi flaring about her hand punches harder into his chest, and when the final blow is delivered, he is sent skidding backwards. Mizuki might just be expecting that to be the end of the fight. Each blow had struck with its full force, and he obviously felt it.

But, somehow, he manages to drag himself back up to his feet. Pointing his staff back at her, he lets the two lower sections dangle, and exhales slowly. Eyes locked on his opponent, though his lips curl up into a grin regardless.

"Amazing! But... don't. Don't count me out yet! I can still fight!"

At that, her lips do break into a smile, a brief one. Those words... words she herself has used. She backs from Yuno, just a step or two, and nods. "I won't count you out until the fight is over, Yuno-kun. That I promise." But he can't be too far from the end, she thinks, as she studies him. It's a delicate thing to try to figure out, just how much farther she has to take him...

%tSince she's close, she merely closes back in; from a standing position, moving forward, she feints a Muay Thai-style knee kick, but that kick is deliberately designed to miss--but the sweeping backhand chop that follows it?

That's meant to strike. A jarring blow, if not damaging. She doesn't want to injure the young man, after all. Just to... put him down? Maybe. To end the fight in the way a fight should be ended--by trial of combat.

Yuno turns to the side, the blow draws a pained grunt from the boys lips. She was right, of course, he really couldn't take much more. He knew that. He'd been at this point enough times to know when he was running on empty. Though he dearly wishes he could keep going... the fight had been exhilarating! And he dearly wished he could have proved a greater challenge to her, to have stood longer and let her challenge herself, even! Still... she had said she wouldn't count him out! He would not disappoint her! He would strive onwards until he could advance no more, and in that spirit, even as the boy completes the spin which had absorbed the majority of the impact, he is leaping into the air.

The staff is a blur in his hands, he's slowing, to be sure, but the heavy metal weapon is still wielded surprisingly well, as he uses his momentum to bring it around, up, and over his head. And it comes down again, with all the momentum and force behind it he can manage, to bring the middle section into sharp contact with her skull... and the top section to bend around, and strike at her back.

Interesting technique. Attempting to strike two places on her simultaneously... a double-whammy. But she has some of the advantage now, and she hasn't pushed herself as hard as Yuno has. She ignores the spinning display of the staff--waiting for the true attack, and when it comes, she steps to her left, moves her body, feels the staff come down right behind her, crashing to the hardwood flooring of the dojo, making a loud sound despite the padding thereon.

Her next move is... simple. Almost too simple, really--but designed to bring the fight to a close, as she steps backwards, aiming a quick elbow for Yuno's forehead.

And, just to make sure--just to keep him from thinking the fight isn't over, if she can help it--she follows up, twisting around, using the moentum to try and thrust a knee into his gut.

Again, painful strikes, jarring, but not devestating, not made with injurious intent.

Yuno is not too surprised when the move is dodged. But as the girl comes in at him, he is already rising. The attack is very simple, he was sure he knew where she was going with it, even in his rapidly exhausted state. The elbow is, quite simply, turned aside with the butt of his staff, lifted up, and away. At the same time, he steps around to the left, the knee passing close, but, not quite touching him, as the bottom of the staff leaps up in his grip, and smacks against the back of Mizuki's head.

And then he turns, breathing incredibly hard, but his weapon still spinning with momentum, his smile is wide, even if he does look about ready to just keel over backwards at a moments notice.

"Wind... blows... grass." He murmurs, softly. As though this explains everything.

The counter isn't as bad as she thought it would be; she winces, but she can take it. The blow forces a stumble, and the odd mumble gets a weird non-plussed look from her... but the fight is still going on, isn't it? Still.. Yuno can't have further to go. He's got to be on his last legs, perhaps desperate. She's still facing him; she moves, feinting a low kick, a kick to his shins. Hopefully he looks down for that kick.

That way he won't see her left palm streaking it to crash against his forehead. As gentle a knockout as she can think of, of course... but one that, should it hit, prove to be definite. Perhaps she's still a little too kind in battle, but there are some things about her that won't ever change.

Yuno's eyes narrow as the open palm comes in for him. He is a little shaky, and, from his perspective, it looks pretty much as though there are two palms. He was really starting to feel the burn, he'd given it everything he had, and then pushed just a little bit further. There was practically nothing left in him. So, he takes the gamble. Raising his arm, he perfectly blocks...

The wrong palm.

Mizuki's attack thumps directly into his forehead, and he stumbles backwards, tripping over his feet as he goes. His backside hits the floor hard. The expression on the boys face is priceless. Mostly, he looks confused. For a moment, it even looks like he might be getting up again, his palm shakily moves to the floor, to help him back to his feet...

And then it gives out, and with a little thump, he topples over with his eyes closed, his staff clattering to the ground next to him. That... was all there is to it.

COMBATSYS: Mizuki has ended the fight here.

Immediately she goes to catch him; moving quickly, slipping an arm around his waist, the other used to catch his staff. Is she happy she won? Not exactly. But looking back on the fight, even in the first blush of victory, she's happy with how it went. And... as she looks down on Yuno, in her arm, she nods. He'll be a good fighter someday. And, she suspects, a prized friend.

For now, though, she lowers him to the floor, and then lets her hands hover over him. That blue-green glow flares around her hands, then suffuses into his body--soothing aches, injuries, healing bruises... it isn't instantaneous, but it is pretty fast... and it should have him waking up shortly. She hopes.
