Neo League 476 - #500: Mizuki vs Laurel

Description: In this Neo League fight set in a corner of the Metro City Park, Laurel's qualms about fighting teenagers are somewhat quashed in a hard-fought, tough battle between herself and the would-be Miko of Southtown, Kamigawa Mizuki... (Winner: Mizuki)

Normally, when the Neo League decides to host a fight somewhere, they go for an area that can be fixed up relatively quickly. This is why they prefer places that are developed, it's easier to fix a few constructed centers than nature. However, when the current fight was proposed, one of the fighters specifically asked that it be held in a small garden area tucked away in the lesser-visited area of the park. Why? Maybe the combatant wants to raise awareness of the garden's existence, and thinks that the fight being held there will draw people who normally wouldn't visit such a tranquil place.

Maybe it's because the fact such a place would keep the bystanders from getting as worked up as they might in a place with loudspeakers and flashing lights, it'll help the combatants focus.

Or maybe the combatant just likes flowers. Either way, it's a rather quiet crowd that's set up to watch, spread out across a small grassy knoll just across a small stream that winds and snakes through the entire area. The set-aside fight area is normally a picnic section, only the tables have been left where they normally are, perhaps to provide a bit more strategy to the fight. Either way, Laurel is currently sitting atop one, checking her 'fighting outfit' one more time, and giving a slight adjust to one of her stockings. "Maybe this time I'll get lucky and not get a run." The woman has put a small asian flower into her hair; though it's doubtful it'll remain there the entire fight.

It's quite the pretty place, that's for sure--and that is something that Mizuki appreciates. The young Kamigawa scion hasn't yet been to Metro City--fortunately, she was cabbed straight from the airport to here, and thusly spared most of the stranger sights, or the more distasteful ones... in any case, she was dropped off at the park entrance, and given directions to walk to this small section.

So, quietly, she appears--walking up towards the Neo League officials and clearing her throat. "Excuse me, I'm Mizuki Kamigawa," says the redhead, "I--I'm here for the Neo League fight. Is my opponent here already?" she asks--and she gets an affirmative from the official, who points the way to Laurel.

"Excuse me, Miss Laurel?" says Mizuki, as she approaches, stopping about five yards off. "I'm Mizuki, your opponent." Her English is... okay... if heavily accented. The girl smiles. "Good luck to you!"

So saying, she walks over to the appointed spot for herself, and waits a bit--but whatever Laurel does, the officials signal the fight started.

For Mizuki, she does what she -always- does at the start of a fight... or well, when she can. She prays, in a sense--communing with nature and finding harmony in it. The result is a swirling silver-blue energy helix that spirals up around her feet in a circle, reaching up to about her knees.

At some point, Laurel's going to have long words with her Friendly Neighborhood Neo League Representative. ...or, as she refers to him, 'That F'N NL Rep.' How is it they can justify so many schoolchildren being involved in these things? Don't the schools mind that they might miss class because they were fighting for the enjoyment of others? Don't the adults in this league feel like she does, and feel a little guilty beating up minors? It's not that all teenage fighters are weak or anything, but... there's just something disconcerting about punching girls who haven't completed puberty or boys whose voices haven't dropped yet. "Uh, yeah...good luck to you, too."

The blonde pushes back her hair as she stands up on the table and watches the swirl of energy for a moment, and then shakes her head. Everybody's got to have a gimmick. The blonde takes a few quick steps and then jumps from the table she's on to another, then springs off that one towards Mizuki, aiming a kick at the girl's stomach.

Now that's just bordering on insulting, right there; 'tis a good thing that Laurel didn't just voice those concerns. Fact of the matter is that 'strength', 'skill', and 'power' are what matter--not age. Mizuki may not be a full-grown adult but she's old enough to know what she's doing and to do it willingly and willfully. It isn't as if the League officials are -forcing- people into these matches.

Fortunately, all those thoughts are practically nonexistent--because Laurel didn't speak up about 'fighting kids'. The girl is busy with her chi energy... but not too busy enough to sense when Laurel is coming. Suddenly, she's pulled her baton, laying it along her right arm in a reverse grip, and then she's interposing it between the incoming kick and her stomach. The impact jolts her slightly, but not too much--and she's quick to respond in kind.

After deflecting the kick, Mizuki's baton flicks out, aiming a swiping swing for that retracting leg.

There could be a lengthy debate on this, where Laurel would point out that 'strength', 'skill' and 'power' are all well and good, but that doesn't mean you encourage fighting amongst people too young to really understand the implications, just like a hunter might take their 10-year-old son with them on a trip, but won't leave a loaded gun in their hands. At a certain point, age and maturity have to be factored in.

Of course, there won't be a debate, since Laurel's attempt to slip sideways out of the path of the staff fails, and she feels the start of a wonderful bruise upon her leg. Hissing slightly in her breath, Laurel adjusts her stance, recentering herself, and then turns around, bringing a quick fist around to try to knock the hand holding that baton out of the way.

There could be. But it remains to be seen whether Mizuki understands the consequences or not, doesn't it? It's not like she's a ten year old; she's a seventeen year old girl, and not that far off from Laurel in terms of age. But this is a debate that just isn't happening right here and now--their argument is taking a more basic form, in the ancient interchange of attack and defense and attack.

Mizuki smiles slightly, at the success of her strike--but that smile is not malicious, just the smile of someone who's enjoying a small amount of success. The incoming punch--aimed at her weapon hand, a smart idea--is avoided, by the simple expedient of pulling her hand way back.

At almost the same time, Mizuki reaches out for the hand that Laurel just punched with, seeking to grab it and, should she do so, she'll turn towards her right, to pull Laurel forward and force her to eat dirt--so to speak.

The arm is grabbed, the figure is pulled, and somehow a well-timed shift of stance and bracing of her posture keeps Laurel from being tossed into the grass. "Not bad. But it needs some flare." The blonde fighter smiles as she says that, and then suddenly falls backwards, attempting to grab the the wrist of the hand that's got her.

If it works? Laurel will kick her legs up to try to wrap her thighs around Mizuki's neck and continue the backspin to pull Mizuki onto her back on the ground. If she misses? ...well, then she'll just attempt to roll back and get some breathing room. Fighting up-close gets twitchy when your opponent has a weapon.

Mizuki's left hand is grabbed--that's inevitable. She kind of wonders what Laurel has in store--her eyes going wide when Laurel uses her hand as a balance point to swing up onto her and pull her into a rolling slam. That... is some serious business.

The redhead doesn't have much time to work with--she has to get inventive. So she crouches and, as Laurel starts to roll her over, she -jumps-... forcing herself into a higher arc. It means she doesn't just go over onto her back... but she breaks free of the grip of those legs. In mid-air, she sweeps her baton forward, as she passes her opponent... the baton misses, but the resultant wave of icy-white chi doesn't, slamming into Laurel even as Mizuki hits the ground and tucks into a ball--she still took some damage, but she thinks she might've come out ahead, as she rolls to a stop then rises.

Just ignore Laurel for a moment while she lies in the nice soft grass and watches the clouds float past. Happy, happy clouds. Floating by so happily. And the grass is so soft and smells so wonderful. And the air is so cool on her skin. Laurel's tempted to toss in the towel if her opponent keeps delivering hits like that one, and it's only after she's taken a few deep breaths that she rolls over onto her stomach so she can face Mizuki and pushes herself up, one arm covering the spot on her stomach where the blast hit. "...not bad. You know your flare. What else have you got?"

COMBATSYS: Laurel gains composure.

Mizuki breaks into a smile. "I'm sorry about that--I don't really like hurting people, but I guess it's a necessity in this kind of thing. If anything hurts too bad, please let me know after the fight, I'll do what I can..." She is awfully polite for someone in the middle of a fight.

"Oh! Well, thank you. But--what do you mean? I'm not sure 'what else I've got' beyond my skills and my resolve to keep going," she says. Then she brightens. "Oh, I think I know what you mean. But if you want to see what I can 'really do', then I'll have to prepare for it..."

And that heralds a change in posture for the young woman, her back straightening, hands clasped, that baton dropping to hang by a loop around her right wrist... and once again, that swirling energy flares up around her.

COMBATSYS: Mizuki gathers her will.

It might just be the blow she took, but... a fighter /and/ a healer? With the same energy? ...things sure are strange overseas.

But, she isn't ashamed to admit that she appreciates the fact that Mizuki didn't attack while Laurel was having her breather. It lets Laurel take in a few good deep breaths. "Yeah? Nice light show. I've got a neat trick, too." Laurel braces herself, leaning forward, and then inhales deeply before she screams. Not just any scream, the scream she's starting to get known by, a focused intensifying of the sound waves she makes that impact like a solid wall of, well, air and sound waves.

Talk about your neat tricks! Mizuki's eyes widen, as Laurel's more-than-just-a-scream kicks up a wave of dust. It is, in fact, only that which induces her reaction--to throw her arms up and -cover-. Man. That was... intense; she felt the physical impact, forcing her to stumble back, and even though she defended against it, it was still rather painful.

"Wow," she gasps, around the dust still settling... "That was pretty amazing..." she comments, with yet another smile.

"But don't think I'm giving up yet!" Sure, Mizuki could hang back, but she'd rather not--she charges forward to make up the distance between Laurel and herself, stopping short and kicking out with her right leg, a quick little snap kick for Laurel's midsection.

The only problem with doing that move is it leaves Laurel slightly out of breath afterwards. Plus, the kick she intended to soak the blow from and use to her own advantage worsens it by further knocking the wind out of her. At this point, Laurel's getting a bit frustrated, and her 'clever tactics' seem to be going out the window in favor of just trying to take her opponent down.

Forgoing any attempts to be 'ladylike', Laurel instead simply balls up her fist and leans forward as she tries to deliver a punch to Mizuki's face to knock her back some.

Nnf. Laurel finally gets a solid it in on Mizuki--and it's a good one to be sure, the fist connecting solidly with the redhead's forehead, the loud *smack* of fist on face echoing throughout the small park area as she does indeed stumble backwards. Oofta. Everyone hits her in the head... she's going to fear for her IQ at this rate! But she hasn't gotten cauliflower ear yet. Still... the smack is loud and hard and brings Mizuki up short.

She pauses... and looks a little hesitant. But then she shakes it off and smiles again, prepatory to showing off one of her other abilities--calling her chi again, one can feel it building--and see it, too, literally forming a greenish cloud over her head that 'breaks', dissolving into a glowing blue-green rain that patters down over Mizuki's head...

Energy effects are never good for Laurel, because she can't make them herself and nobody ever makes one for her benefit. So, Laurel presses the slight advantage, moving forward to follow up that punch with a solid knee to the stomach and then a toss over Laurel's shoulder against one of the old wooden tables. Whatever Mizuki has in mind, hopefully it won't be as effective if she's distracted by not getting beaten up! ...or down, in this instance.

Fortunately, the healing is somewhat 'fire and forget'--but it's also relatively brief. The 'rain' is over just before Laurel reaches her, and she's free to move--and move she does, snapping her left hand down and pushing off against Laurel's knee, lunging backwards to avoid the inevitable grab that is to follow. The backjump leaves Mizuki at one of the tables, her right foot braced against it, left foot on the ground.

Considering for a moment, she suddenly pushes off with her right, practically flying across the ground, her right arm drawn back, baton held in that reverse grip. As she nears Laurel, she lashes out around head-height with it--but also intends on following up, as she plants her feet and brings the baton around in a second uppercut attack.

There's a lovely 'THWACK', the sound of a solid impact. However, when people finish blinking, they'll see Laurel standing there, slightly shoved back, with her hand wrapped firmly around the fist gripping that baton Mizuki wields. "You're telegraphing a little. Try not to indicate which way you're going." Granted, Laurel's no pro, but it never hurts to give out advice.

Laurel grips the fist fightly, and attempts to pull Mizuki close, as if they were about to ballroom dance. However, she's also stepping backwards, pulling Mizuki with her, until she gets to one of the park benches. There, she steps back onto it, and then flips up, swinging her leg around to clock Mizuki upside the head.

And it does in fact make contact--rather solidly, for all that. But not solidly enough to take Mizuki down. She would stumble forward but instead turns, planting her right foot and swiftly changing direction, bringing her baton up and around in a power-uppercut, the weapon glowing blue-green in energy...

It always intimidates Laurel when people attack her with things that glow. Nothing she does glows, it isn't fair! Plus, glowing usally means it hurts more than if it didn't glow. It's why the woman is quick to turn so the blow glances off her backside, where she smiles back at Mizuki. "Good try." The woman then twists around, attempting to grab hold of Mizuki's arm and twist it around behind the woman's back, as her other hand reaches to grab her hair.

Whether or not the first part of the attack follows through, the second part is really quite simple. Laurel takes a deep breath and screams about as loudly as she can, focusing all her inner strength behind it. It wouldn't burst eardrums or anything, but it is fairly reminiscent of standing too close to the export end of a small airplane engine, with enough force to make it hard to hold on to her target.

Which is why she usually tries to do it while lying on top of them.

Mizuki's long, flowing red hair! Yikes! It's grabbed and that's painful enough... and while Laurel doesn't pull Mizuki to the ground, she does loose that scream--which Mizuki barely gets her arms up in time to defend against. It still hurts, forcing her backwards, wincing at the power inherent in this woman's voice... still an amazing thing, as far as she is concerned. Truly amazing.
Still and all... fight's still on, people up and cheering for their favorite--an equal amount for the redhead as the blonde... something Mizuki appreciates, as she sets herself, rubbing her ears. There's a bit of ringing in them... nothing permanent, but she isn't talking because she'd be shouting.

Instead, she closes with Laurel, snapping her hands out and trying to grab her by the arm and once again, turn and force her into the ground.

If Laurel was aware of the fact that anybody was actually cheering for her, she'd probably be so stunned she wouldn't react in time for any of Mizuki's attacks. As it is, however, they're probably just rooting for her due to the fishnets and blonde hair. Laurel really isn't in it for the fans, however. Honest. There's a /reason/ she wears that outfit. Seriously.

The blonde is grabbed and twisted around, forced down onto the ground to get a faceful of dirt. However, the blonde uses the move to her advantage, having her legs bunched up underneath. The blonde swings her head back, attempting to slam it into Mizuki's face, and then twists around to bring up a swift knee not once, but twice into the girl's stomach before pushing her up and jumping to a standing position with one more knee to the face. It's back-alley survival tactics that she's falling on here.

Back-alley, down-and-dirty... it works. Mizuki is stunned by the blow to the head, left open for the combination of knee strikes that sends her reeling backwards. She wasn't expecting that at all and it's... well, it's painful to say the least. She's rocked backwards for sure and it takes her a bit to recover... but recover she does, her mouth set in a rather determined line. Not angry--just determined. It's been a rather close fight--but Mizuki is determined to win. Just as Laurel is, of course.

Considering her options, Mizuki suddenly just lunges forward, closing the distance with her opponent and attempting to thrust her baton, end-first, back into Laurel's gut--a swift strike to hopefully finish this off.

Laurel shifts and crouches slightly, taking the weapon jab against her arm. It makes her flinch, but she smiles slightly before she once again takes a deep breath and screams at Mizuki, hoping the close range and the fact they're both somewhat tired will have more effect on it this time. She's careful to aim it, though, screaming up towards Mizuki so she doesn't accidentally cause the bystanders any discomfort. That would be, by definition, a 'bad thing'.

Nnh. Mizuki tries to get out of the way--but to no avail. The nearly invisible wall of energy smacks right into her and she is sent tumbling. Rising to her feet, she hisses softly... once again, finding that she has to draw upon her special healing ability to survive. Closing her eyes, remaining crouched, the blue-green water-chi rains down on her again...

It's regretful that she has to do it again, but perhaps it is also for the best... after all, she's been moving away from using her healing ability too much, but there's a difference between too much and too little. She's worked hard to learn how to do this, after all...

Oh, nononono. The last time Mizuki used that green glow on herself, she seemed to get some energy back. Now /that/ is just playing unfair. Laurel mutters something under her breath, and then rushes forward to try to grab hold of Mizuki's arm, twist her around, and then slam her down onto the picnic table in a desperate attempt to disrupt it. She knows it likely won't work, but maybe she can do more harm than it can heal.

Laurel still can't stop her from healing--but she -can- make it harder to hold on to that health. Though, truly, that was up to Mizuki--instead of following her instincts, she tried to end the fight. For her troubles, she was grabbed and slammed into the picnic table--yelping in pain, and staggering away. She still got a little bit back, but... well, let's just say that it wasn't much.

Wiping some blood off the corner of her lip, Mizuki narrows her eyes slightly, much of her friendly demeanor again replaced by intensity and resolve...

Laurel's determined to press the attack here. The woman takes a few deep breaths, and then braces herself once more, using said table to support herself as she takes a deep breath and then screams loudly. Before, she was able to focus her chi to a narrower area, like speaking through a bullhorn. Now? It's just a widespread screech that ripples out from her mouth like water does in a pond after a rock is dropped in it.

Birds scatter, fans cover their ears as it starts to reach them, and Laurel closes her eyes, pretty sure she isn't going to have the energy after this move to do much else than lie down and drink some hot tea to comfort her poor throat.

Laurel might feel that 'glowy' chi effects are unfair, but the energy she puts out is definitely potent. Mizuki watches Laurel inhale a deep breath and... shakes her head. Because she knows the blonde -isn't- just going to sigh... she's gonna -scream-. Mizuki isn't the -most- athletic girl around--she tries, but there are many far more limber than her--but she can move when she wants to and when she has to.

So when Laurel opens her mouth, Mizuki crouches... and thrusts herself forward into the air, leaping as high as she can, tucking into a ball, not even seeing what devastation that scream wreaks... she tumbles forward, feeling the edges of that scream pass underneath her, and as she comes out of her aerial tumble she lands right in front of Laurel--and attempts to just, once again, strike her in the gut with the baton.

That whole debate before, about whether or not teenagers should be in these tournaments? Laurel would be hard pressed to convince anybody since Mizuki just jabbed her in the right place at the right time and causes an already strained rib to snap. The flash of pain is enough to make Laurel crumple like an origami construct being hit by a truck. Probably more than what Mizuki was expecting, but hey, at least it seems she won!

As the pain makes everything turn red, Laurel half-ponders trying to grab the girl and take her down with her... but that would be somewhat being a poor sport. The girl did well. She earned the win. ...no matter how Laurel might feel about glowy attacks and weird head energy stuffs.

... wh--whoa. Mizuki didn't hit that hard, did she?! Immediately she pulls the baton back--ignoring the League officials as they announce her the winner. No, her concern is Laurel, whom she crouches next to. "Are--are you alright?" she asks, softly, reaching out towards the blonde. "Here, please, let me help..."

She almost sounds pleading--if there is any one glaring weakness, it isn't in her skills, but in her attitude... though that is slowly changing as well... "Please, you fought well, it was a very tough match..."

"Thank you, I would love the azaleas." Laurel's not really in at the moment, as it's rather hard to focus with the pain she's experiencing. However, she is at least able to smell the flowers surrounding the garden. They seem particularly sharp right now, possibly an after-effect of all that adrenaline going through her system.

Laurel isn't really protesting any help, though it depends on how long it'll take the Neo League guys to show up, gently shift her onto a stretcher, and carry her off. "I'm sorry, the store is closed right now." You tell 'em, Laurel.
