Athena - Magical Girls!

Description: OR: The Un-Dramatic Battle. Episode 2: Athena thinks Ingrid's psionic signature is a little off. In order to test this, she tries to have her cake and eat it too with a comeback exhibition match in Southtown! Unfortunately, Ingrid smugly interrupts her Big, Flashy Finish. Then Athena knees Ingrid in the gut for the win.

For the most part, Athena can pretty much disguise herself when she goes out. In fact, when she' not on stage, she looks somewhat different. Less like a superstar pop idol and more like your average young girl doing average young girl things. Even minor psionic tricks dtract from her oddly colored hair. There are some differences though. Given her ties to the social spheres that she runs in, she's often found on her phone talking to people with curious names, such as 'Brad', 'Angelina', and the occasional 'Mr. Speilberg'.

The other thing she can't really hide is her psychic power.

Athena's got it in spades. It swirls around her and broadcasts her like a beacon to anyone who is psi sensitive within quite the radius. Despite the fact that she tries to dampen the power so that it's not as pervasive, she still hasn't managed that trick yet. As a result, she gets a lot of strange visitors.

However, as she sits on the mall bench eating a very large sticky cinnamon bun, it's apparent that the least thing on her mind is psychic power and the subsequent defeat of evil that her latent psionic powers demand that she do. Right now, it's eating the bun so that it doesn't get everywhere, and yet somehow stuffing her face with it simultaneously.

One of the malls frequent visitors is about today, enjoying being among the crowds. She is, in fact, a fellow psion like Athena, though she doesn't recognize her powers as such. Ingrid is simply aware that her power is unique to herself, and though there are others with very similar energies, none are exact copies. She also can't sense energy exactly as that, but she does tend to be drawn towards powerful individuals.

She exits one of the clothing shops empty handed after having gone in to browse, looking about at the people filling the outdoor mall, mostly students from the nearby Taiyo High. She doesn't recognize Athena upon sight, her skills at disguise preventing that, but does note that she's never seen her before. This doesn't necessarily need to mean anything in a city of millions, but there is something striking about the Idol that she can't quite put her finger on.

Ingrid continues on past Athena, but only far enough to stop at a food stall, randomly deciding on fish and chips. She keeps looking towards the Psycho Soldier from time to time trying to figure out if she'd want to talk or would rather be left with her cinnamon bun, which might draw her attention, though she does look at others that are about as well.

The appearance of similar power makes Athena's eyebrows raise. Psycho power is rare enough for her to take notice. The trouble is, not everyone that has it knows of it, like Ingrid. Still, others use it for selfish reasons. By nature, Psi is immuteable. It's the power of 'good' or 'evil' as mankind understands it, and the moral implications for a psionic user are more dire.

But unless the person is just so powerful, so virtuous or malovent, the difference isn't readily available to her senses.

Athena, for example, broadcasts the power of love. Others, however, broadcast very minute moral singals. And it's up to Athena to investigate.

Bun in hand, she strolls over to Ingrid, beelining her way over to the odd blonde girl, clearing her throat.

"Excuse me, but your psionic aura is funny."

Ingrid could very well have a muddled psychic reading. As far as the actual energy she uses goes it'd be defined as good/neutral, but she wouldn't radiate the wonderful love that Athena seems to. Luckily she doesn't radiate anger or hate either.

The purple haired girl coming up to her makes her decision on whether or not to interact for her, but the statement manages to catch her off guard. She turns to look at Athena for a moment, considering how to respond.

"It is?" She looks down at herself, as if examining her clothes, "And I just had it dry cleaned!" Humor is such a wonderful way of responding when you don't know what the other person is talking about. An aura she understands, but not psionic. And why should hers be funny? "My name is Ingrid, by the way. I don't think we've met?"

Athena smiles slightly, although her brow furrows due to her inability to read the psionic wavelegnth is a little troublesome. Master Chin told her how this was done at least a dozen times, and yet still there's some difficulty in the process. The only real way at this point would be to get hit with the stuff, and that's never pleasant.

"Nice to meet you," she replies bowing slightly. "Sorry if this must seem strange, but I'm sort of an... expert on this kind of thing. And your psionic reading is just unusual, that's all."

She scratches her cheek. Should she reveal her name? Well, it not like anyone can really recognize her. "My name's Athena." Good. Leave it like that. If she says she looks like 'superstar' Athena, just laugh it off and don't say anything else.

"I don't suppose you're a fighter, are you?"

Ingrid tilts her head just slightly at the furrowed eyebrows. When she's bowed to she responds with a smile and a curtsy. "I suppose I should consider myself lucky if an expert considers my 'psionic aura' noteworthy. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but it certainly sounds interesting."

A looks of slight mirth forms onto Ingrid's features when Athena reveals her name. "A Greek name for a Japanese girl; that is also very interesting." Other than that little comment, however, she doesn't seem to bring up anything about the name or whether or not she recognizes it. "I am, as a matter of fact. I'd actually gotten the impression that you were as well. I suppose if you asked such a question you probably are." That could help explain why she'd be able to sense her 'psionic aura'. Some fighters do have odd abilities like that.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, though; Southtown has a very large fighting population."

The pop star nods. The fact that she's not recognized as a music star releives her somewhat. The last thing she needs is a mob of incoming fans. Those tend to ruin her day. As much as she loves the people that like her music, they can be slightly overbearing sometimes, and some of them are kinds... creepy.

"Well," Athena says, "It's a little unusual for that kind of power. Normally it's fairly easy for me to tell certain things about people if they have the kind of power you have. But your reception isn't that clear. I guess that doesn't make any sense, does it?" She tilts her head and sticks out her tongue.

"I don't suppose you'd be interested in a match, or something?" Athena doesn't really want to fight, but the more she talkes to Ingrid, the more curious she becomes. While some aspects of 'good' seep through, the amount of wavelengh static she's getting suggests near ambivelance. That's a little disturbing.

It wouldn't be very much fun for Ingrid if Athena got mobbed either; she'd probably end up in the crush as well as losing someone interesting to talk with. It's probably good for Athena that Ingrid isn't a creepy fan. In fact, it's probably good for everyone that she isn't.

"I see. I'm not surprised that you'd find me hard to define, I am, after all, a fairly complex person." Ingrid laughs softly when Athena sticks out her tongue, and smiles, "You're doing a wonderful job of explaining it to someone who's clueless. I do at least have some idea what you're talking about, now." Interested in a match? "Hmm..." Ingrid considers this for a few moments, and then finally nods. "I suppose I would. I did, after all, move to this city in order to practice against others, and fighting can be a wonderful way of expressing yourself. Or that's what I believe, at least."

Oh wonderful! This is a good sign. Ingrid's not laughing like a maniac, or calling her a fool. Those are sure fire signs of evil there. However, there are all kinds of bad, but only one generally accepted sort of good. Athena gestures to the open court. "Then I suggest we go over there and give the crowd a show, shall we?"

As she point, she starts to make a phoen call. If her managers find out she's fighting without thier knowledge, they'll have a hissy fit. So, better call them and let them know.

If anything, it'll keep everything in the clear with her and her agnecy. Goodness knows that returning to the swing of things have been hard enough. As she makes her calls, the 'arena' is being cordoned off by queue rope and security men are showing up to make sure things go smoothly.

"I know a guy," she says sheepishly as the place is set up to her liking.

Maniacal laughing isn't Ingrid's style, by any means. She really doesn't have the voice for it, either. She'd fit in much better with a haughty 'Oh ho ho' than a crazed 'Ahahahahaha' if she were to take on that kind of personality. She takes a look over to the open area and nods speaking as Athena gets out her phone, "That does look like a good place. I'm sure everyone will stay out of our way and prefer to watch. They're probably rather used to this sort of thing." A pause as the call is finished and the area is almost immediately being transformed into a dedicated fighting arena. "Or that... You're no ordinary girl, are you, Athena?" Ingrid smiles once more. "I suppose if it's to be an exhibition match rather than just a friendly fight I'll have to try my hardest. But then again, you'd probably prefer that." It's more fun, and better training. When you're expecting it, anyway.

"Well, here's how it works," Athena replies as she takes her place at one side of the arena. "I've got obligations to fulfill, and people to keep happy. So I do what I got to." She raises a hand in the air as the crods gather around to watch the young girls do battle.

"Alright!" She says, her voice chirping as she plasters on a big bright smile. "Everyone, you know we'll do our best for you, but in order for me to do /my/ best, I need you all to repeat after me!"

Her hand starts to glow, pulsing with the pink energies that she's known for. The ball swirls out like a ribbon, whirling around her as she starts to glow birghtly.

"ATHENA..."

And with a sharp /crack/, the energy dispels, leaving behind Athena. her hair now much shorter, dressed in a red and white Race Girl outfit. The minidress is snug and has white boots and gloves, with a red stripe down the middle. A red cabbie cap adorns her head, with the trademark star on the corner.

And the crowd, recognizing their fighting idol chants back with her: "ON STAGE!"

Ingrid nods along as the ropes are explained to her. "Obligations to fulfill? That's a curious way of putting it." A bemused look appears on her face when Athena springs into her routine. However, something else catches her attention. Glowing with pink power is one thing, suddenly disappearing and reappearing somewhere else is completely another. She begins to study Athena with a curious intensity. There's only one other person she's ever seen who's been able to do something like that.

The blonde isn't able to make such a flash entrance as that, but if Athena's going to showboat for the crowd, never mind that it's obligatory in her case, she'll try to as well. She bends down once she's near the cordons, and then leaps high up into the air, flipping once and landing opposite Athena on the stage.

"I'll warn you," she says, "I'm not going to hold back any just because we have the same kinds of powers." Athena's big grin cracks a little to show that she's serious before she turns to wave at her fans witha gloved hand. "I expect you to attack me with as much power as you can muster!"

The pop idol turns back to Ingrid and points at her. "I, Athena, challenge you to an honest duel of skill and power! We battle until one surrenders or is unconcious! Those are the rules we abide by!"

That being said, she waves her arms in half circles, and then whips the forward, crossing them in front of her suddenly.

"Flowers on the Earth! Love to the people! Warrior of Love, here comes... Athena!"

COMBATSYS: Athena has started a fight here.

Ingrid smiles at the statement. "That's exactly what I was hoping for. It wouldn't be very sporting if I were to try my best and you held back, after all." She reaches a hand up and brushes her hair back behind her shoulders, smiling towards Athena. "So you use the same type of power as I do? That would explain a fair amount of why you seemed so interested in me."

The blonde isn't very used to such involvement with the audience and showboating... at least not the good-natured version that Athena is using. "Very well then. I accept your challenge, Athena." She drops into an easy, open stance. "Let the best woman win!"

COMBATSYS: Ingrid has joined the fight here.

Athena doesn't waste any time.

Her body seems to glow brightly with power, to the point shere it looks like she's merely a giant pink incandescent light bulk where a girl should be, and the fabric of reality warps around her. Glitering sparkles trail after her rapidly moving figure as she seems to blink from one end of the arena with a bright, cheerful cry of "Teleport!"

As she moves, however, The contrails seem to disappear, leaving nothing but a trail of starlight and glitter.

The disappearing Athena trick lasts for all but a second. Suddenly, a spot on the ground opens up, and from the shimmering pink spot, Athena seems to just... aappear! Unfortunately, this appearance is right in front of Ingrid's face.

"Do your best!" She chirps, and she kicks up one foot in an impossibly high and flexible motion to slam her booted heel into Ingrid's collarbone, followed by a secons sharp rockette-style kick to the girl's chin.

COMBATSYS: Athena successfully hits Ingrid with Renkantai.

Ingrid should probably have made the connection between the ability to move like that and it's combat uses. Her own thoughts on it had been that it was an excellent form of transportation, and she'd -very-much like to know how to produce such an effect, if only to follow someone could use such a technique. However, it seems to have very real fighting possibilities. When the pink aura flares up Ingrid is expecting a blast of energy or an energy laced limb. The disappearing act catches her off guard, and Athena is suddenly before her.

She leans back and holds her arms up in front of herself, trying for a more sure defense rather than an all or nothing gambit. Despite this the two kicks strike her perfectly, the skill and speed of the attack completely overwhelming Ingrid's attempted block. She lets out a quiet gasp and staggers backwards before regaining her balance.

She's outclassed. That's okay; she's fought people who have outclassed her -plenty- of times before. It's an uphill battle, but she'll just have to try her best. She did promise as much to Athena, after all. She decides on a game of range, quickly swinging her arm in an underhand motion, a trail of glittering golden energy trailing after it. A large ball of shining psi appears from her hand, raising up into the air and then falling back down towards Athena in the pattern of a sine wave.

Gold. Interesting. She's never seen /gold/ before. She'll have to talk with Master Chin about this, and soon! But despite the color of her power, it's clear that Ingrid doesn't have a full grasp of it. Neither does Athena, but her training in the use of it is a little more comprehensive.

She can use it to teleport, attain limited levitation, fire blasts of energy, or increase her admittedly frail strength tenfold. Or, as Ingrid is seeing, it can be used to defend.

Whirling her arms in a circle, the traced air flickers and flares to life, the transeculent pink crystalline screen taking a direct blow from the flying attack.

With a crystal ring, the ball collides with Athena's power screen, and delicately launches it back to Ingrid, sending it hurtling to the air as Athena breaks the screen and closes in, following the golden energy burst with incredible footspeed.

Ingrid wasn't expecting to get her energy thrown back in her face, and makes a quick attempt to dive out of the way after it bounces off of the pink shield and comes back at her. Unfortunately the very nature of her attack thwarts her; it's reflected upward, and as she attempts to leap out of the way it intersects her, blasting her out of the sky and sending her to the ground. She makes a little frown, and then picks herself up and brushes herself off.

"I've never liked it when people use my own power against me. You'll find I'm very stubborn about that sort of thing." There's very little she can do about it now, however. So far she'd tried to face Athena directly, but that hasn't worked. Perhaps she's simply been careless. She's normally very careful about how she fights. So now despite the fact that the crowd might not want a lull so soon, Ingrid simply turns her attention to detailed study of Athena. She'll have to find a chink in her armor if she's to stand a chance.

COMBATSYS: Ingrid focuses on her next action.

Get used to it, Athena thinks to herself, her big smile never wavering. The fact that energy weilders all tend to have some good way to thwart the power of another energy weilders was trained through a lot of years, sweat, and getting hit by flaming spit. Sometimes, Master Chin was disgusting.

Despite this, Athena's learned how to deal with the power bursts of another.

It looks like Ingrid's taking a back seat to re-evaluate the situation. Having had followed the trajectory of the ball, Athena is right on Ingrid as she sits there to caluclate her chances. Unfortunately, Athena whirls around yet again to counter this new development.

"Don't be sore at me," Athena says, scoldingly. "I didn't want it, so I just gave it back! I appreciate the thought though! Here, have one of mine!"

And with that, the Psycho Soldier whips her arms from behind her to snap in front of her face, flinging a bright pink burst of psycho power along with it. "Psycho ball!"

COMBATSYS: Ingrid fails to slow Psycho Ball from Athena with Sun Burst.

Ingrid           0/-------/=======|=====--\-------\0           Athena

Ingrid quirks an eyebrow, "Sore at you? Not quite that." It's certainly a very valid form of defense, she simply likes to believe that she has enough control over her power to prevent that sort of thing from happening. Of course personal control doesn't actually help against such attacks, but that doesn't make her feel any better.

When the ball of energy is sent her way, Ingrid offers a little smile. This was, in fact, a development she was completely ready for. A flash of golden energy forms around her, and she reaches her hands up below her chin and a dull little ball of energy forms. She blows it towards the pink psycho ball... but it's too late. As she does this the attack impacts her, Ingrid falling backwards from the force, her own energy blast innocuously drifting skyward. She picks herself up slowly, and then abruptly laughs. "Oh dear... I must apologize for performing so poorly; you must have a low opinion of my fighting abilities, by now."

"Don't worry what I think," Athena says as she leaps up into the air, twirling as she tucks herself into a small ball, "just keep yourself awake, alert and always ready to change your tactics..."

The purple haired girl reaches the apex of her leap, and then starts her downward descent. However, she doesn't burst into pink energy flames as she angles her attack down.

Instead, she unfolds from her tight tucked roll for a split second as she tries to crash her backside into Ingrid's head and upper torso. If she succeeds, she'll bounce off, and follow up with a soft landing and a full out haymaker punch to the chops.

Ingrid           1/------=/=======|======-\-------\0           Athena

Ingrid laughs softly, "That's good advice, thank you." She feels a bit chastised by the remark, but realizes that Athena is obviously more skillful, and the advice was likely offered in the spirit of helpfulness rather than chiding. Luckily, Athena gives her exactly the type of opportunity she needs to show she isn't completely inferior.

As Athena falls down towards her from the sky at her she takes a quick step backwards before leaning forward and pointing at the air in front of her. A disk of swirling golden energy forms, not entirely unlike Athena's own technique but with a vastly different purpose. Athena's rear impacts the disk, and she's frozen in the air for a split second, the psi suddenly disappearing as it invisibly wraps itself around her, Ingrid swinging the hand she pointed with upward in a grand sweeping gesture, flinging the psycho soldier into the air only to let her drop.

"There, that's better." It might not be enough to save the fight, but it certainly gives her confidence a bit of a boost.

Athena lands on the ground with a thump. That was certainly unpleasant, but not really near as embarassing as it could be. The energy burst itself did only half the pain. The ensing fall, however, was what caused Athena to take note, and she stands up with a quick flip.

Booted feet steady herself as she lands next to a wastebasket, Athena gets an idea.

"Hmp! Not bad! So let's see how you like... improvised tactics!" Gloved hands wrap along the rip of the wire basket. Her hands charge up brightly with chi, and the basket glows brightly with pink for a second before she hurls the trash bin at a speed that should by all rights and means be absolutely impossible. Trailing after it is a residue of her psycho power, of which may land an unpleasant surprise on Ingrid should it connect.

COMBATSYS: Athena successfully hits Ingrid with Thrown Object.

Ingrid           1/----===/=======|======-\-------\0           Athena

Ingrid's thoughts on the subject are that garbage flying at you is probably a good thing to dive away from. The problem with this is that the trash bin isn't empty, and all that crud inside of it flies out in random directions, pegging her. The sudden addition of energy to the attack is additional cause for concern. She feels somewhat tired, which isn't an effect she's run into before. She shakes her head a little, and straightens. She's feeling tired, but she has excellent control over herself and her energy. She takes a slow breath and steels herself against the fatigue.

And after that, she rushes Athena, something that's probably completely unexpected after the tactic used. She jumps towards Athena once she's close, spinning around with her elbows held out, attempting to batter the Japanese girl with them, her entire body laced with glittery energy. Once she lands she immediately launches into a flip kick, heels extended and aiming for Athena's jaw as she shoots high up into the air, a long trail of energy following after them. "Yosha!"

- Power hit! -

Ingrid           1/-======/=======|=======\-------\0           Athena

Athena isn't the most powerful warrior. Really, when it comes down to it, without her special brand of energy, she would probably be little more than a curiousity in the fighting ring. But even without it, she has one thing in spades.

Speed.

As Ingrid runs towards her to and an energy laced kick, Athena knows precisely what to do. She raises her hands, both of them smoothly spinning to once again generate the shining crystal disc of power. As the girl's foot crashes into the barrier, the psionic feedback it causes is devestating.

What could only be described as pain rips up Ingrid's leg at a mind numbing level as Athena leaps back from the brilliant energy burst caused by the connection of foot to energy disc. "Shocking!" She says with a cheerful grin and a roar of the crowd who happens to be eating this stuff up.

Ingrid's gambit to catch Athena off guard was a painful mistake. Perhaps it would have worked on a lesser caliber of a fighter, but Athena was perfectly ready for her, and she got walloped good for her mistake, simply kicking right into a disk of waiting energy and getting blasted away for her efforts. She picks herself up off the ground, clearly in pain and ready to drop. So far she's only made one successful maneuver against Athena, and it's somewhat embarrassing.

But there's another problem. That energy disk. Ingrid doesn't feel she can make a comeback, but she does wish to test that barrier once more. A flash of energy once again forms around her, and she lifts her hands up beneath her chin, a small dull sphere forming. She blows this towards Athena, and it floats rather slowly towards her. Of course there's nothing at all stopping Athena from simply jumping away or trying something else. To Ingrid this is simply a contest of wills.

COMBATSYS: Athena endures Ingrid's Sun Burst.

Well, here goes. Athena wanted to see what this chi was like, and now, given that Ingrid has shown her that even if she /is/ evil, she's not a threat that she can't conceivably manage. Despite that, it will be good to keep track of this one. It's always a good idea to keep track of potential pionics.

As the bubble meanders towards her, Athena brekeas into a dead run. The girl's rapid pace picks up seed as she raises her arms at the last minute and simply breaks through the attack, the golden energy wreathing around her. She winces from the mental feedback if only for a second before she leaps high into the air.

The young girl turns and twists in the air, spinning gracefully. "Sometimes, I'm an ordinary schoolgirl." Her outfit flashes into the schoolgril outfit. "Sometimes, I'm a pop star singing sensation." Again, her clothing changes into that of a frilly Japanese pop idol's. "But in reality... I am..."

She lands dramatically, her outfits flickering across her body as she turns to face Ingrid, posing with both hands outstretched. "Psycho Soldier Athena!"

And as she says this, Athena shoots forward, a combination attack of rapid punches and kicks meet Ingrid, Athena's constumes continuing on their mad roulette cycle before she simply stops on her Race Queen outfit, psionic aura flaring up to blast the other girl away.

Ingrid looks slightly surprised when Athena simply smashes through her attack physically and keeps going, but all in all she seems powerful enough to do such a thing. She'll have to remember that in the future. The flashy changing of outfits, luckily via teleportation so as not to give the audience /too/ good of a show, is very impressive. It's also very, terribly, horribly telegraphed.

When Ingrid sees this she hunkers down and waits for Athena to come to her, waiting for whatever the dramatic conclusion to the sequence would be. And it comes. The first attack is met with anticlimactic poise, Ingrid simply pointing in the air and forming another disk of energy while crouched down on one knee, the position makes the disk almost as large a target as her. The result is predictable; Ingrid stands up as the energy surrounds Athena and swings her arm into the air, the Psycho Soldier getting tossed up and then dropped. It's not as powerful as the other version of her counterattack, but it's specialized against flashy attacks such as the one Athena just demonstrated.

Might as well play up the dramatics. "And I'm Ingrid Holmann; the Eternal Goddess."

Specialized or not, the most the return attack seems to do... is stop the assault. There's simply not enough force in the return for Athena to do much more than enter the air for a split second. Stumbling backwars as she lands, she seems more surprised than anything else. She's not usually interrupted during one of her finale moves!

But that just means one thing.

Athena is upset.

Her head bows slightly, her bangs obscuring her features and an unpleasant, toothy smile creeps over her face.

"You... you messed up the ending."

The white gloves on her hands are stripped off, and she starts forward. "You... you don't just /stop/ an ending." Then suddenly she bursts forward to slam a knee into Ingrid's gut. If Ingrid doesn't want a spectacular finish, then Athena will just go to basics.

COMBATSYS: Athena successfully hits Ingrid with Light Kick.

"I did, yes. But I saw an opening and took it. You're stronger than me, but not perfect." Ingrid seems rather nonchalant on that matter. If Athena can throw up a disk of energy to knock her energy back, Ingrid can intercept punches and kicks in much the same matter. The knee to the stomach, however, she tries to avoid rather than intercepting. The odds of a successful intercept are...well, abysmal. However today it seems that such intercepts will be all that she's capable of, the knee smashing into her stomach and doubling her over. She winces, shakes her head, and then throws herself into an assault, once again spinning around to try and smash Athena with her arms before following up with a flip kick laced with energy. "Yosha!"

She really had to dig deep try pull it off properly, and regardless of what happens afterwards she'll fall to the ground breathless.

COMBATSYS: Ingrid can no longer fight.

Well, it wasn't the picture perfect finish, but Athena did manage to pull a win. As the kick swings towards her head, Athena simply slips into the ground, the portal beneath her feet opening up to swallow her, only to have her reappear behind Ingrid. Hm. Well, it would appear that the girl has some ability to handle her power. Next time, she'll have to actually unleash some of her more powerful attacks.

Sometimes you have to hold back to get a show, no matter what you say to your opponent. Besides, she had her fingers crossed. Nothing about being good says you can't tell a white lie now and again.

"And that's what you get for talking when you should be not getting kneed in the stomach," Athena says, waggling a finger at Ingrid. While it's petty of her to say... that's just too difficult to pass up, considering the other girl wanted to seem so nonchalant about stopping her flashy assault cold.

Some people have no flair for the dramatic.

Another call on her cell phone, and Athena's people are already cleaning up. Although she'd like to talk to Ingrid more, she's immediately rushed out of the building to avoid more small mobs, leaving Ingrid in the are of her staff who see to it she gets proper care.

A day in the life of a media darling is lukewarm at best.
