Neo League 401 - #413: Roberto vs Frei

Description: Balls-out Neo League battling. Seriously. (Winner: Roberto)

Roberto had no idea that there would be a Neo League fight today. Apparently the staff with the Neo League thought it would be a good idea crib a concept from MTV's Room Raiders. In particular the 'kidnapping' of fighters.

First there's a camera crew practically waiting for Roberto the moment he put his hand on the door knob of his family's apartment in Gorin Heights. The Neo League crew grabs Roberto and run him into the elevator and then out of the building a look of confusion on his face as he ends up getting pushed in a white van and the door closes. One of the things he notices is a small television in the van that is off and assorted cameras that he'd assume would be to capture the fighter(s) reactions from varying angles. After taking this all in he mutters, "God forbid they come up with an original idea."

Man. Not only did they kidnap Frei, they took his Triforce and scattered it all across Hyrule. Link, it's your job to collect them and defeat Ganon Howard before it's too late!

What actually happened is that the monk was simply not expecting a call since his Neo League dance card had been empty for quite some time. Considering he'd taken time off to find his new apartment and move in, then get it furnished, this isn't a huge shock... but apparently he forgot that he asked to be put back on the active roster. Thus as he is working on his brand-new windowbox, complete with 'Passion of Fire' bouquet courtesy Chisa's flowershop, he is suddenly ambushed. By ninjas.

No, for real! Ninjas. In fact, one of the TVs keeps replaying footage of them dropping out of Frei's lofted ceiling, his look of surprise, and then a FTB as it scrolls back to the front.

When Roberto arrives, the crew is just now cutting Frei down from the pole he had to be tied to, his hands and feet bound to the length of wood like he was a trussed up pig about to be cooked for a luau. "You guys seriously could have just ASKED," he mutters. "Now I've got rope burn."

Damn... Frei got ninjas? Roberto just got guys in Neo League jumpsuits. He'd feel cheated if he knew what went down. Well he'll feel cheated when it comes out on DVD. After a few moments Roberto hops out of the van. "Ok. Well now that I'm here. I guess we can get this started."

The star striker unzips his duffle bag and produces a soccer ball as he tries to psyche himself up for the upcoming match he gives a few testing touches to the soccer ball before taking his stance. "Frei... Good to see you again. I hope the Neo League staff never try a stunt like this again."

There's a loud *THUD* as the crew (not in ninja costume) cut Frei's bonds and he drops unceremoniously to the ground. Looks like they decided a little outdoor park sandwiched between buildings was a good place for the fight. Getting up (slowly), Frei rubs his wrists and gives the Neo League staff a nice Frowny Face(tm). "ANd your mom," he mutters at them as they depart.

Turning when he hears his name, the monk espies Roberto warming up and blinks. That guy knows him! Squinting for a second, Frei attempts to dredge his opponent's identity out of a large register of potential Taiyo people. He's clearly not Sakura or Hinata because he's a guy, and he's not Shingo because Frei recognizes the gloves. Finally, he snaps his fingers. "Soccer guy... Roberto! Right? Been a while." Admit it, Frei, you almost called him Shingo. "Yeah, I'm not too thrilled about that either." Shaking out his hands, he reaches behind his head and tightens his long-tailed headband. "Ready to go?"

COMBATSYS: Frei has started a fight here.

His fingers wiggle a bit as he remains silent. He takes a few moments to adjust his own particular gloves and stretch as he continues to try to pump himself up and then when he's finished the elaborate ritual that ends with a loud, just short of being obnoxious, crack of his neck before sliding into a ready stance.

Now the soccer star gives his answer. The first part of it comes in the form of a nod which is then followed by an explosive run at the soccer sending it at the monk. When the ball is released he grunts out a,"I'm as ready as I'll ever be." Whether he believes it or not is another question considering that he keeps attacked in the legs.

Now, Frei is not really an accomplished soccer player. In fact, he's not even any good at, like, FIFA 2006. He can't even play virtual soccer. But there are some vague similarities between his fighting style and certain *ELEMENTS* of soccer... a certain reckless disregard for life and limb in pursuit of the perfect shot, the perfect save, the perfect goal. As the soccer ball comes in, myriad possibilities whirl through Frei's head.

Ah, screw it. He actually just panics and reacts on instinct, diving AT the ball and, in a burst of sheer stupid luck, making a PERFECT head pass, ramming his forehead into the ball and sending it spiralling back at Roberto... who, being an expert goalie, probably isn't in any actual DANGER, but it does have the dubious benefit of sparing Frei more than a token injury in the form of an extremely powerful headache. "Ow!" he mutters, clutching his forehead with both hands. "Ow ow ow!"

COMBATSYS: Roberto dodges Frei's Large Thrown Object.

Roberto that goes against the instincts of every outdoor soccer player when he does what he does. Normally a field player, be it goalie or striker would move right in the way of that soccer ball and either catch it if they are a goalie or chest trap if they are a field player.

How Roberto responds is more akin to how a indoor player would respond. He dodges the ball letting it bounce off the wall before trapping the ball with the outside of his thigh.

Upon regaining possession the ball he moves towards the monk dribbling as he makes a sudden cut using this sudden direction change to provide the momentum for the elbow he throws towards Frei's gut.

COMBATSYS: Frei fails to interrupt Strong Punch from Roberto with Charged Throw.

It was such a good plan. A nice plan. Frei's newfound facility with chi, the ability to call it up much more readily and often than he had before, has inspired him to make some dicey moves in combat of late. As he sees the elbow coming in, he's already reaching his hand back, wind whipping about his extended palm in a mini-maelstrom as the monk prepares to catch that elbow and propel Roberto away all in one smooth motion. Sadly, the motion is not so smooth, and all Frei gets is to stumble backwards, wincing in pain at the blow he just took. "Ow... that stung," he gasps, trying to get his breath back.

Roberto knows all about plans that go astray. As a matter of fact the last free for all he fought in was mostly his plans going wrong. But when his plans go right, just as it did when his elbow found its way into Frei's bread basket, the pride of Taiyo's soccer team just has to smile a little. The joy is short lived since he decides to press the attack by snapping out a kick right after performing a spin move to the monk's flank and delivering a quick kick.

COMBATSYS: Frei blocks Roberto's Light Kick.

Frei             0/-------/-----==|-------\-------\0          Roberto

The second time is not the charm, unfortunately. As the kick snaps up to Frei's side he thrusts out a hand with surprising speed, turning the kick aside without too much trouble. Perhaps taking it on the chin might have been smarter, giving the monk a greater opening, but he's already taken one nasty shot this fight and it's just started... no sense testing his luck. Grinning wildly, he charges the hopefully short distance between himself and Roberto and snaps out a hand, looking to grab the soccer prodigy's arm or even throat if need be. If he can get a grip, the monk twists and, with one arm, slams Roberto into the ground headfirst, a burst of green motes of light at the point of impact the telltale sign of the earthy chi that's driving the impact. "Oryyaaaaaaa!"

COMBATSYS: Roberto blocks Frei's Daichi Kudaki.

Roberto goes up and over but that's about the limit of how well it goes for Frei. Roberto catches himself with his free hand and converts it into a one handed round off before twisting away from the Monk's grip. Roberto gambles on Frei being too unbalanced to do anything about his next attack. This attack happens to be a glowing foot swinging high into the air. The best case scenario being Frei getting carried up into the air with that foot.

COMBATSYS: Frei blocks Roberto's Thrust Kick.

Apparently that move isn't as overbalancing as it looks; when the Taiyo soccer genius decides to try and kick Frei up a notch, the monk is having none of it. He drives his forearm up and then out, pushing down against the kick, Roberto's glowing energy clashing against a field of silver-white that flickers in and out of existence near Frei's arm in a shower of sparks. However, it appears that Roberto's attack was enough to get the monk on the defensive; he doesn't attack, but instead backs up a step and takes a deep breath, centering himself. A wind kicks up in the area, making the tails of his headband flutter behind him dramatically.

COMBATSYS: Frei gathers his will.

The blocking of his kick? Not good unless the soccer player intends to make this a war of attrition. And that wind? Roberto doesn't like it one bit. However in order to address this. He moves to that soccer ball that he was taken off of, and flips it back up into his hand with a thoughtful expression. After that he leaps up and goes into a front soccer ball spring using the momentum of the move to drive the soccer ball down on the monk as hard as he can.

COMBATSYS: Frei blocks Roberto's Random Weapon.

Taking a classic defensive posture, Frei brings both arms over his head in an 'X' shape just as Roberto is about to land, the ball and the holding crashing into the monk and sending him back a few paces, his sandals sliding across the ground and kicking up dust from the force of the blow. "Not bad... you've got ingenuity on your side," Frei says cheerily, trying to give Roberto an honest compliment even as he sets up for his next blow, a pair of blue-white spheres of ice cold chi that form, one in each hand. "But I know a few tricks too!" Hurling one, then the other, Frei unleashes the ice attack; when the spheres get close to Roberto they slam not into him, but into each other, creating a massive burst of frosty chi. "Heads up!"

Frei             1/------=/=======|-------\-------\0          Roberto

"Thanks!" Roberto has little time to evaluate his options the frosty chi is coming at him too quickly for him to dodge. His hands are occupied by that soccer ball that he attempted to brain Frei with. Blocking would place him in a bad position and so he does something a bit different.

Roberto performs a leap backwards which by itself isn't enough to get himself out of the way but while he leaps back he releases the ball from his hands and as both are descending, the star striker spins around kicking the ball as hard as he can. The soccer ball meets the balls of icy chi and upon collision bursts through as it continues on its path towards Frei.

COMBATSYS: Frei overcomes Long Shot from Roberto with Hadou Souran.

A flicker of surprise washes across Frei's face at that. To blow through his shot like that with a precision soccer kick is pretty damned impressive, in his playbook... but he doesn't feel like getting hit by the incoming attack either. Cupping his hands at his sides, his eyes never leave the incoming ball as he gathers a shining sphere of multicolored chi, something Roberto might find familiar-looking if he's fought Sakura before... this version's just a little more brightly colored than hers. But the vocal? Exactly the same. "Haaadooooukeeeeeeeeen!" Throwing his hands forward, the monk meets the ball with a sudden shockwave of chi, his own version of Sakura's version of Ryu's Hadouken. The ball goes flying across the arena, and the projectile continues on toward Roberto, churning the air with power.

COMBATSYS: Roberto fails to reflect Hadou Souran from Frei with Shining Clutch.

Roberto hasn't fought Sakura before but he has fought Ryu before but his response is exactly the same as the response he made to the World Warrior which he used with some success then. With a feint glow his hands move to intercept Frei's cribbing of a cribbed move. His hands just aren't in the position to catch the ball of energy as a result of releasing the soccer ball when he went to kick it at him. Roberto is sent flying for a few moments before skidding on the ground and prone.

Wisps of multicolored light pour off Frei's hands as he holds the Hadouken stance for a moment, a little tuckered out from the desperate back and forth of projectiles that just transpired. He blinks when the smoke clears and Roberto is... on the ground. Deciding that kicking a man while he's down is a little cruel, Frei takes a deep breath and centers himself, keeping his eyes on Roberto for now. The soccer prodigy doesn't LOOK like he's out for the count -- far from it, in fact -- but it never hurts to be a little cautious. "You okay there, man?"

COMBATSYS: Frei gathers his will.

Roberto gets up to his feet. "Well now... That was a new trick. Though based on my previous experience with that move from another fighter or rather a variation of it, I had expected a different outcome" He begins to make his approach again. Starting with a walk at first but then he breaks into a run before leaping out knee first in a slow highly telegraphed attack but with lots of power put into it.

COMBATSYS: Frei blocks Roberto's Heavy Kick.

Frei             2/<<<<<<</<<<<<<<|====---\-------\0          Roberto

With a grunt, Frei twists his body and shoves his *shoulder* into Roberto's strike, instead of taking it on the chin. The look on the monk's face makes it clear that he already regrets it; the force of the blow is not quite as dulled as he'd like, pain washing outward from the point of impact. "Well, I'm unpredictable that way," Frei responds with amusement, before turning and making a quick grab for Roberto's wrist. It's nothing fancy -- all he intends is a quick wrist lock, something to give him leverage to let the crackling energy between his fingers flicker through Roberto's body. Kind of like electroshock therapy only with the opposite intended effect.

COMBATSYS: Roberto just-defends Frei's Fast Throw!

First there's a quick side step and then Roberto's hand glows faintly as he pulls it away from Frei's own hands just barely escaping the attempt at applying the wristlock. He doesn't take the hand too far away though since his hand draws the chi away from Frei's finger tips and forms it into a ball of energy in his hand similar to how he would've performed the Shining Clutch. That's where the similarities end. Instead of pushing the energy back at Frei though, he closes his fist around the energy and takes a deep breath as he drops to the ground to slide at the monk's legs with one foot extended in a slide tackle.

COMBATSYS: Frei endures Roberto's Sliding Kick.

It works just as well as expected! Perhaps... a little too well, actually, though Roberto might not be able to tell. Frei doesn't bother to get out of the way -- could it be he didn't see the attack coming, perhaps? -- and Roberto's kick knocks him backwards, sending him backside-first toward the ground.

Which he catches with one hand.
In fact, the entire affair was a ruse on Frei's part, drawing the soccer prodigy in close so that he can try and turn the tables all in one go. The hand that keeps the monk in a Jedi-like handstand suddenly flickers with the same prismatic light that powered the Hadouken before... only this time it is much brighter and considerably more intense. "Got too close!" the monk singsongs, before flipping back up and essentially blasting Roberto with a massive, invisible shockwave of chi at point-blank range, the air between the two rippling with the aftershock.

COMBATSYS: Frei successfully hits Roberto with Fukami Reikai.

Frei             0/-------/---====|=======\=------\1          Roberto

Roberto not only got too close, he also made the mistake of using a move that while fast on delivery isn't quite as fast when it comes to recovery. Those two factors together force Roberto into a compromising situation and eats a massive blast, grunting in pain as the blast bears down on him.

Then it all ends and Roberto rises back to his feet before switching to what looks to be a boxer's stance rather than a goalie's ready stance. Afew moments of dancing around, he snaps out a jab as he begins to feel Frei out with a different tactic.

COMBATSYS: Frei interrupts Quick Punch from Roberto with Fast Throw.

It's a sound tactic, dropping a line in the water to see what you get. Sadly, when Frei sees the bait, he takes it. As Roberto's jab heads for his face he's already extending a hand, licks of scarlet flame roaring into being around it as the monk suddenly *grabs* Roberto's hand and, with a wrenching movement, hurls him to the left, letting the flame from his hand leap and crawl across the soccer prodigy's body. It's not a particularly powerful move, but it does manage to position Frei a little better to deal with what comes next... and has the unexpected benefit of saving him the pain of the punch, the monk looking effectively unharmed.

Not powerful indeed. By itself, it would've been little more than annoyance to the soccer star. However he's been taking a lot of damage and so after that he's a bit slow to get back up to his feet. There's a slight grunt and then he swings his foot out in an attempt to throw Frei into the air. Maybe this time the kick will meet with some success.

COMBATSYS: Frei blocks Roberto's Thrust Kick.

Frei             0/-------/--=====|=======\===----\1          Roberto

Sadly, it is not meant to be; as before, Frei throws out a guard at the last second, this time with his open palms rather than his forearm. The effect is the same, though; rather than lift, Roberto is stuck with a groundbound Frei who is ready to bring this fight to a close, judging from the expression he's wearing. "You're a pretty resilient guy, Roberto," Frei says, almost sounding pleased about it. "But so am I!" Gritting his teeth, he decides to take a gamble and rush forward at the soccer star, the wind literally at his back as he accelerates with wind chi and looks to simply tackle Roberto and smack him into a nearby wall at incredibly high velocity, gusts of wind chi swirling about his form as he does so. "It's now or never!"

COMBATSYS: Roberto dodges Frei's Strong Throw.

Frei             0/-------/--=====|=======\===----\1          Roberto

Unfortunately for Frei, in addition to being resilient, he's freakin fast. He's calm and poised as Frei goes full tilt towards him and then at last moment he cuts to the side as if letting an overly aggressive defender pass by. He doesn't take his eye off of Frei and goes charging for the soccer ball that he previously kicked at Frei slamming his foot into it sending a glowing, flame engulfed soccer ball flying at the monk. If it should reach the monk he should be getting flash backs of the SNF the two were in together right before that soccer ball explodes.

COMBATSYS: Roberto successfully hits Frei with Blazing Strikers.

Frei             1/------=/=======|-------\-------\0          Roberto

Perhaps the important thing here is that Frei is effectively running on fumes at this point. He frowns, sets his jaw, and stares the soccer ball right in the eye.

It explodes in his face for the trouble.

However, Roberto's not out of the woods yet. As the flame and smoke from the rather flashy-looking soccer pass start to fade away, Frei suddenly comes FLYING out of the cloud in a shoulder charge right at Roberto, his body barely touching the ground and encased in a blazing arrow of silver light. Of course, the fact that it's his last gasp means the technique might not be 100% up to speed, but one never knows. "BONUS GAME!" Frei bellows as he arcs across the ground.

COMBATSYS: Frei can no longer fight.

Then he falls over, face first. Thud.

And then after that Roberto's hands form together into a pair of fists. Sure he could probably dodge but at this point in the match it's just too big of a chance to take. He bends his knees, spreads his weight and meets the shoulder and slides backwards. And when the monk falls down his hand drops and breathes heavily. Once the official declares the soccer star the winner he drops to his knees as he has nothing left in the tank either.

COMBATSYS: Roberto has ended the fight here.
