Neo League 251 - #257: Frei vs Megumi

Description: Well, the outcome was never in doubt, but he DID ask for someone with excellent hair. (Winner: Megumi)

So, Frei Tsukitomi-Renard is the losingest loser in Loserton Bluffs. Well, at least as far as the Neo League is concerned. His standings are so low they're currently in line to enter the Brass City of Dis somewhere around the first layer of Dante's hell. This would probably be a bad thing if the monk gave a damn about his win/loss record... or if the League wasn't making a ton of money off his fights. Is it arrogant to call him a 'fan favorite'? Probably. It'd also be a FLAT OUT LIE. But he does have some dedicated fans... mainly because he's quippy, energetic, and flashy.

Kissing Alma on international pay-per-view really upped his fanbase in certain other sectors, if you get my meaning.

So he trundles on, enjoying the fighting more than the rewards, and because even his losses are making them money, the Masters Foundation continues to book him whenever he asks. It's a nice relationship, even if it has bumpy times now and then. Through the magic of Flashback-O-Vision, we present the following example:

SD-Frei: "I want a match, pwease." Beeeeeam! ^_____^
League official: *sweatbead* "Well, I might be able to work you in. Do you have a preference of opponents?"
SD-Frei: "Ummmmmm..."
[5 minutes of awkward silence]
League official: "Mr. Renard...?"
SD-Frei: *exploding out of his chair* "Neat hair! I want to fight someone with REALLY COOL HAIR."

Flash forward to today, where a pumped Frei, presuming they fulfilled his request, is currently sitting in the sand on the beach portion, with a pair of John Lennon blue-tinted round sunglasses pushed up into his red hair and sipping what appears to be a pina colada out of a big hurricane glass, waiting for his opponent to show up.

He... appears to be singing.

"Girl from Ipanema goes walking..."

Megumi had been surprised to receive a challenge like this, but tries not to show it. Where most people would arrive in the arena by an entry-way, she shows up at the spectator seating, walking by to 'give five' to the crowd and otherwise get them psyched up, including a fairly blatant play for fan support as she removes a wrist-band (leaving just one on her) and giving it to someone, before vaulting over the glass seperator and onto the beach ground.

"Don't think I've ever met ya, but...you look pretty relaxed about this. Should I go ahead and assume..." Megumi stretches out some, arms propped behind her head, "That this is gonna be a match instead of a fight? Something fun?"

Looking up from his drink, Frei just catches the end of Megumi's entrance and beams. The color, the length... yep. They fulfilled his request. Leaping to his feet, the monk sets the glass on the sand, dusts off his hands, and beams at Megumi with a ten million watt smile. "Hey, they realled pulled it off! You DO have *truly excellent* hair!" he gushes, nodding to himself a few times in contentment.

Flexing his fingers out, the monk gets into stance, a loose tai chi/kung fu hybrid looking affair that's practically not a stance at all. "Well, I mean, in the sense that we will throw punches, kicks, and other assorted hurting things at each other, it's a fight, but..." He does a quick tai chi hand push, as if shoving something invisible downtoward the floor, and then snaps back to his previous stance. "But I still think it'll be 'something fun', sure."

"Eh?" Megumi doesn't hide her surprise so well this time, definitely not expecting how thrilled Frei is about her appearance. "Um...thank you," she manages with a nod, easing up again as Frei does what looks like practice and preparation. "I'm ready whenever. So..." She walks away from Frei, faces him, and takes up her own usual Aiki stance. A few seconds later, a voice comes over the arena speakers. The voice says only a single command: "Fight!"

COMBATSYS: Megumi has started a fight here.

The monk gives Megumi a critical eye for a moment, taking a step around her in a bit of a circle as he thinks about his first move, stepping slowly. "Well... you look like you're a teenager, so you're probably like Sakura, or Hinata, or those other girls and can, like, benchpress a Mercedes or something..." he muses, somewhat aloud. He then gives her a goofy grin. "It'll be an interesting time, that's for sure!" Deciding to take the initiative that Megumi has offered, Frei rushes forward at her, hands down to his sides as he gathers a glittering gold orb of energy, like a little ball of sunlight. "And nothing's more fun than fireworks, right?" When he gets near to Megumi, the monk thrusts both hands forward, palms out, and the golden sphere explodes into a burst of colorful energy, a little localized sunburst to test her defenses.

COMBATSYS: Frei has joined the fight here.

"Huh? Um...not quite. Not quite 'teenager' anymore, and I'm more fast than strong, y'know?" Megumi remarks about any similarities to Sakura and the others. She rolls aside and beneath Frei's palm-thrusts, grabbing for one of his legs. She's trying to pull that leg off balance to drag him to the ground, and if she manages that, Megumi will try to apply an ankle-lock for a few seconds.

...right then. His attack totally avoided, Frei just blinks, and then goes wide-eyed as he tumbles backwards down to the ground, Megumi having snapped his feet out from under him. Hitting the sand with a loud *TWHUMP*, the monk kersmacks his head right on a sand castle he'd been making while he waited, destroying it utterly. However, just as Megumi is about to snag Frei's ankles he pushes his hands back over his head and suddenly vaults backwards, flipping to a wobbly stand in the sand. "Yeah..." he says, going all @_@-eyed. "...I can see that."

Wasting no time, however, the monk draws his hands back, spheres of blue-white energy appearing in both palms... but instead of hurling them at Megumi he suddenly ducks to the side and chucks them at the water in the 'beach', causing two huge sparkling spikes of ice to leap upward at her at an angle. It's a little different, but maybe it'll give him the distance he needs to regain some momentum. "The ringing in my ears says you're plenty strong, though."

Megumi lets Frei go, deciding it's unwise to chase after him once he's out of the hold. She gives a quick glance down to the 'collateral damage' done to the sand-work, and then Megumi sees Frei's unusual energy-shots and takes pre-emptive measures against it. Her hands go slightly apart, forming a single, head-sized sphere of sparkling red energy that hovers in place. "Thanks. You're a bit different yourself...don't see many palm-strikes lately." Then with a gentle push she sends it flying at Frei...smashing through the blue-white orbs before they can get too far, and continuing on towards the man of the hour.

Now that, he was not expecting. That said, for being something he wasn't expecting Megumi's counterattack leaves Frei looking pretty pleased. His eyebrows go way up, even as he scrambles to pull his arms back and out again, gathering enough energy for another shot as fast as he possibly can. "NEAT!" he exclaims, beaming. "That is a cool trick! ...HA!" Throwing his hands forward in an Athena-like fashion, he hurls another pair of icy orbs forward, but this time they collapse together into a bigger sphere, which collides with Megumi's shot in a burst of red and blue-white light... but in the end, her Comet is all but annhiliated, leaving a sudden hail of ice shards to head Megumi's way, precipitously weakened but still viable.

Megumi continues to be surprised time and time again with Frei. When he turns this into a fireball war and actually seems to be winning, she tries to jump aside, and instead catches a rib-full of ice shards, even if they melt pretty quickly. "Geh, that's...somethin' else. Where'd you pick that up?" She's curious, and much more cautious now, staying back to watch Frei and try to gather her thoughts...

COMBATSYS: Megumi gains composure.

He made it look effortless, but that clearly took a lot out of Frei, who is left hunched forward a bit and breathing heavy after that exchange of artillery. He grins raggedly at Megumi, then straightens and throws his arms down to his side, gathering his strength. The wind in the arena suddenly kicks up, resonating with the young monk's chi. He grins, red hair blown upward by the special effects. "Six years of exhaustive training in China, plus a long childhood fascinating with RPGs," he says cheerily. "You?"

COMBATSYS: Frei gathers his will.

Megumi sees Frei is doing pretty much the same thing she is, but he's building up for something. She loses patience first. "Mostly self-taught," Megumi answers as she breaks into a sprint toward Frei, hurling herself bodily at him, trying to land horizontally on him, so her arms and legs can wrap around his upper body and one of his arms, hopefully dragging him to the ground where she can apply a reclining arm-bar.

Frei             1/----===/=======|=------\-------\0           Megumi

One of the benefits of that chi-gathering stance is that it puts Frei in good postion, defensively speaking, to take whatever comes his way. It's something he frequently uses to his benefit, even now. Take, for example, Megumi all but hurling herself at him. He's in a great position to basically reach out and CATCH her. That was the PLAN, anyway. It would have been pretty sweet. Instead he misjudges and she basically gets her attempt at a very cool throw turned into a substitute flying body tackle, in which Frei is driven right into the sand and then bounced off of instead of arm-twisted. It... sort of hurts less than if the move itself had connected, but not by much. "Tha wuf wewwy soopuh ahf meh..." he mumbles into the sand, before hopping back to his feet.

Shaking his head to clear it, the monk grins at Megumi. "That was kinda cool. A little too graceful for proresu, though, aren't you?" Thus proving his power to Completely Misread The Situation, Frei goes back on the offensive, leaping toward Megumi and attempting to basically run up her body, planting a foot on her thigh, then her shoulder, and then spiralling off into the air! For kicks, just as he kicks off her body, a bolt of purple lightning arcs out of nowhere from above to add a little spice to the maneuver as well. Provided it works, anyway.

"For what?" Megumi has to take a second to figure out what the heck Frei's talking about...and it's a moment enough for him to make his attack while she gets up. The 'run' is deflected easily, she pushes him away into the air...and figures that's the end of it. Untrue: There's the 'lightning' that comes out of it, and that zaps her back with a quick "Ow!" She doesn't linger on it, flinging herself headfirst at Frei, a fist extended as she, too, twirls through the air. This fist is surrounded in the same red energy she used before, as she aims to slam into his chest. "Not sure if I'd do that sort of stuff...but is there really such a thing as 'too graceful'?"

Haha! That's what he was hoping for! Grinning wildly, Frei quickly turns around as he stands up. People always charge right in after he does that move. In Ackbar's words: "It's a trap!" Without a word, only a loud kiai, the monk sets his foot and then blazes through the air in a shoulder charge to meet Megumi head-on, a furious nimbus of cold silver energy surrounding him like an arrow. Two powers set to collide in furious battle!

Right up to the point that Frei misjudged Megumi's height and her knuckle beans him in the face, bringing the entire thing to a halt and sending the monk flying end over end through the air in the other direction to land face-first in the 'forest' part of the arena, where he doesn't move for a good long while.

Eventually, he manages to get up to one knee, and rubs his nose, knitting his brow. "...ow."

Megumi lands on the sands, but doesn't stay there long as she sees Frei bouncing off into the trees, and chases after him. Dashing one way, then vaulting onto a tree-branch, then diving down at him in an inverted posture, head down and feet high in the air as she grabs at his head, trying to 'fly past' him and drag his cranium back to the ground with some force...and hopefully land in a handstand after that.

Frei has enough time to look up and blink, saying "...oh" in a quiet voice before Megumi snags him by the neck and slams him into the ground *hard*, his eyes going wide with impact as he lands on the brush and... definitely does NOT get back up this time, instead choosing to stare at the ceiling with a sort of glazed expression. "Jo, you shouldn't argue with Mrs. Garrett," he says in a dreamy sort of tone. You can almost see the stars circling around his head. "If she says to paint the fence, you should paint the fence."

COMBATSYS: Frei drops his guard to recover.

"Oi...I'm not hitting you /too/ hard, am I?" Megumi backs up a moment to right herself and let Frei recover, before realizing that he's still quite conscious, and possibly doing some sort of trick. "Is this 'drunken fist' or whatever they actually call it? I'm okay with taking chances on traps like that!" More energy gathers around her fist, and this time she jumps onto the side of a tree, using it to springboard back at Frei, fist held ready to slam into his gut. If she connects, the hand won't actually make contact with him; the sparkling red glow around her hand will burst outward in a powerful explosion.

COMBATSYS: Frei just-defends Megumi's Crimson Blast!

Frei             0/-------/-----==|====---\-------\0           Megumi

Well, it probably isn't Drunken Fist, not in the most literal sense of the word. But there is something in Frei's fighting style where appearing to be one thing and actually being something else that is a consistent theme. He'll be jovial and sprightly one second, deadly serious the next. In his mind, it's just another example of the pivot between Yin and Yang, something he is intimately familiar with.

Thus when Megumi comes in for her attack, the monk suddenly leaps to his feet, straining his body to move when it probably should just have stayed where it was, and summoning all his strength into one hand, which suddenly snaps out and all but stops Megumi's momentum entirely, the red halo of power hitting what looks like an invisible ripple of the air, stopping it dead... and perhaps reminding the pink-haired fighter of someone she knows with similar SFX. "If there's no such thing as too graceful," the monk says cheerfully, suddenly swinging his other hand around and attempting to snag Megumi's hand with his other hand, "is there such a thing as too hard?" If he can get a grip, Frei suddenly twists, intending to drive Megumi straight into the ground one-handed, almost like a chokeslam, but with a burst of green-brown earth chi at the end for extra spice.

Megumi is, once again, baffled by something Frei has done. "Whaaa?" That's the most she has to say when Frei completely stops her attack, and tries to spin away from him...no luck. He's caught up to her and smashes her to the forest ground. It stings, but she still has her wits and grabs at the hand holding her arm, trying to reach up underneath its wrist, push up...then grab that offending hand and twist it sideways as she rises; a typical hand/wrist-lock.

Yeah, well. That moment of awesome is shortlived. Why? Because Frei himself is a little stunned by it, and it shows as he comes out of the throw technique with a sort of wide-eyed expression, almost as if he'd been in a trance the entire time. "...whoa. I don't believe that worWAH!" And that's exactly when Megumi grips him with prodigious skill and with him being almost entirely unresisting from the shock. Wincing in pain at the lock, he grits his teeth and then does his best to struggle out of it, finally doing so with... rather more force than his necessary, compounding the really painful wrist injury by running straight into a tree as he pivots out of Megumi's grip. There's a pause, before he steps away from the offending bark and gives Megumi a sheepish look. "I am not really making a good first impression, am I?" he asks, squinting.

Flexing his fingers a little bit, the monk makes an attempt to get back on track, looking Megumi over. "You've got neat moves. Makes me wish I'd taken some basic judo... usually the up and up brawl's not my deal. I'm into the shiny more, myself... I'm better at that." And then he's suddenly airborne, launching himself at Megumi with an aerial axe kick that suddenly bursts into crimson flame on the way down. "WATAH!"

"You're doing fine," Megumi remarks as she releases the hold while Frei gets out of it. She hadn't expected to keep him for long, anyway. "For a surprise challenge, I wasn't sure what to expect...you're still in this, so you're doing fine. And I can see..." She brings her arms up in an X-shape to block the blazing kick; it still hurts, but not so badly. "That you definitely are flashy. But I really wanna finish this while I'm still good for it," And so, Megumi tries to keep that axe-kicking leg held, and jump up with it. If she manages this, she'll carry it towards Frei's head to force him to flip over to the ground, and if that succeeds...she lies down next to his feet, trying to apply a harder, longer ankle-twist to one, and using her other leg to try and pin Frei down. She wants to keep this one going.

It was such a *good* plan. It'd worked so well in projectile battles before; you make them think you can only do the move with the one appendage, and then when they're not looking you up and smack them with the other one! Risky, but usually the surprise factor works in your favor. "Thanks! But I'm not left-footeGURK!" The monk had STARTED to suddenly swing his other leg forward in another fiery kick, this one horizontal and more accurately aimed to get Megumi to let go of his feet. It's interrupted by his inability to breathe properly once he's flipped head over heels and then slammed into the ground painfully, the ankle twist barely necessary to keep him on the ground. "...ow."

Megumi could probably keep the hold going, but after Frei's kick fails and he lingers with an 'ow', she decides to go for a more elaborate finish. Letting go, Megumi hops back up, pumps a fist into the air to try and psych the crowd up for a big finish, and then reaches down for Frei's legs once more.

If she gets them, Megumi will then try to pick him up by spinning...twirling in place, gaining more speed, before jumping into the air and flinging him down to the ground. A tree might be more effective, but there's no need to do something that harsh in what has been a perfectly friendly match. Thus, grass and dirt are the target of choice.

Oh, it works without question. Frei barely has the energy to resist; Megumi carries him up and around through the air with the greatest of ease, flinging the relatively light monk toward the ground with crushing force. But in a highly dramatic fashion, almost as if this were a comic book, at the last second Frei's heavy-lidded eyes spring open, and he lashes out both hands, doing a sudden handstand to cushion the blow and then rolling forward, stopping in a crouch and breathing incredibly heavy.

"Ha... ha... wow. Just like that Acacia lady... and that blonde kid. I keep running into people light years ahead'a me..." Staying in the crouch, the monk squeezes his eyes tight, trying to center himself. He's barely got the energy to kneel, let alone stand. This should, by all rights, be over. But he's not going to let it be... and it shows. "But that's why I gotta give 120%!" he suddenly shouts, lurching forward and lashing out with a slow but vicious roundhouse right to Megumi's stomach. It's ragged, it's barely even an attack, but it's *something*.

Megumi lands in a deep crouch after flinging Frei down to the ground, not quite seeing that Frei is still up. She really should stop making assumptions that things are over, but at least she's not shocked when Frei gets up and launches at her with a kick. She rises, catches it at the ankle, and spins him off balance. That's when Megumi rushes in to seize an arm, spin behind Frei's back with the arm wrenched upward, then continue her spin while releasing that limb and swings her own arm at Frei's neck, driving him to the floor again. "Still in this?"

The question is partially rhetorical, as Frei wasn't particularly "in it" even when he made the foolish kick in the first place. He hits the ground with crushing force, having nothing left in him to resist, and he almost bounces as the pseudo-clothesline that makes up the end of Megumi's move sends him to the dirt. He lays there for a second, looking glassy-eyed at the ceiling of the arena, but finally has the strength to snap out of it and look up at Megumi with a faint grin. "Not really," he says wearily. "Not anymore. I just... made a promise to someone else I fought. That I wouldn't stop just because logic says I should." However, in one last desperate struggle, he clenches his right fist, which glows vibrant orange-red. "Was fun. Nice to know the ways I need to improve myself. I'm... kinda particular about my personal space when I've just been embarrassed, though," he says with a smirk, before raising that hand and exploding another burst of chi fireworks in Megumi's direction. Telegraphed and slow, but apparently all he really wants to do is put some distance between Megumi and himself.

"Good," Megumi answers Frei. "There's not much room for 'logic' in this stuff. A fight-plan, yeah. Bein' smart about stuff, that works too...but 'logic'? It's not about that." She bridges backward very low to the ground, to let Frei's final energy-wrapped fist go over her, fireworks and all. Then she gives a final shove to send Frei to the ground, waits...and does one final, celebratory fist-pump as the fight is ruled over. "You kept in it for a while. Haven't seen you around...was this your first fight?" She doesn't showboat for long, apparently more curious in Frei than in lengthy celebrations.

The monk has *just* about enough energy to keep himself from conking out entirely, but when she asks if this was his first fight, he groans, unable to keep from laughing, albeit raggedly. "Ow... that's low, chica," he murmurs, grimacing, but in a jovial way. "No. I've been in the league for a while. I just wanted... to fight new people, see new styles." He leans his head back again and closes his eyes, taking a deep breath. He doesn't seem bothered by Megumi's showboating; after all, it's part and parcel to this sort of thing. "I'm not really a very good fighter," he admits. "It's chi that interests me. It's... sort of a career for me, trying to understand it better."

Megumi repeats a few of those words. "Interests...understand...huh." She raises an eye at that, walking over to offer Frei a hand up even as he rests; she's not sure if he'll see the hand, but it is held forth. "Like some sorta...'chi researcher'?"

He *doesn't* see the hand, not at first. Maybe he's communing with the earth. "I guess you could call it that," he says slowly, mulling the idea over in his head, "though as job titles go it's not really very sexy, is it?" Groaning with pain, he opens his eyes and espies Megumi's hand and, not having any machismo-related qualms, takes her up on it, getting to his feet with some effort. "I call myself a monk, I guess... that was the only thing I was ever good at," he explains, grinning faintly. "Philosophy, I mean. How about you?"

"Dunno if you should be worried about 'sexy' with what you call yourself," Megumi's pretty casual about it, helping Frei up. "Me, well...I didn't have much of a philosophy until about a year ago, and just now finished figuring it all out. Guess if you want I could tell you about it sometime, but..." She waves a hand around the area, "Probably shouldn't keep the arena clogged up, in case someone else ends up needing it. Could talk to ya later though?"

Frei looks incredulous at that, though it's a friendly amused sort of incredulity. "In case someone needs it? You don't think someone's got a bar mitzvah in here at 2 or something?" he teases, then winces as he moves his arm a little too far. "Yeah... that's still tender. Anyhow. Maybe sometime we can do that. Or fight again. Sometimes even a severe beating can be fun." He grins, then gives a wave and proudly strides out of the arena. Or, you know, limps out. Why split hairs?
