Jinmu - The Hyo Investigation: Part I

Description: Hyo Imawano has been framed for murder, and Justice High sophomore Jinmu Tetsunagi is doing everything to clear his name. Step one: Track down the guilty parties that are findable and not liable to slaughter Jinmu easily. In other words, Chen.

--- Chen ---

If the clothes make the man, then this must be a fairly impressive man. By most standards, though, he's just some 5'6" Chinese guy with a basic, short-cropped haircut, lightly-chiseled features, and a slight frame. In street clothes, he wouldn't stand out from the crowd -- sure, he's got some meat on his bones, but he's hardly a bodybuilder. Perhaps the one feature that would set him apart would be the bright smile he wears practically 24/7.

But... back to the clothing. The man's outfit definitely bears signs of Chinese influence, though there are some unique touches which set it apart from the traditional cultural designs. While the shirt bears the distinctively high Mandarin collar, piped with thin, medium grey trim, the firmly seamed shoulders seem more reminiscent of Western design. Silk, patterned with a repeating dragon motif, is also a hallmark of the Chinese design school, though the simple black silk of the man's outfit is rhythmically augmented by horizontal swatches of a velour material along the arm; similar fabric serves as the lower third of the shirt. The pleated pants are definitely more Western-themed -- though share some of the transverse stripes of the upper garment. Small touches are a set of gold cufflinks, and a rather well-cared-for pair of Mephisto shoes. All in all, formality is the order of the day.

--- Jinmu ---

Not particularly intimidating in stature or physique, the young man before is only about 5'9" and possessing a slender, unimposing build, Jinmu is hardly an impressive figure. With a narrow waist but broad shoulders, he actually seems to have some measure of upper body strength, but he certainly doesn't seem well-built overall. His facial features aren't unappealing, but they don't particularly stand out. Bearing the olive complexion of a Japanese youth, Jinmu has bright brown eyes and mid-length dark hair that isn't particularly styled, simply long and kept away from the eyes. His face is mostly round, save for a pointed chin and cheekbones, and he tends to wear a pair of glasses with thin, rectangular metal frames.

Jinmu's clad in the standard Justice High Winter Uniform; orange trousers and an orange jacket with long-sleeved, buttoned up along the front -- Vaguely similar to Hyo's, albeit less decorative and slightly more practical looking. It seems like a garment comfortable enough to wear for low-level athletic ability without losing too much formality. Though, Jinmu seems to have forgone shoes in favor of a pair of white tennis sneakers, which look a little out of place on his person.

Finally, what looks like an oversized duffel bag is strapped to his back and across his chest. It's black, about three feet long, bulky-looking, and absolutely covered with zippers. One might wonder what goes into it.

From the outside, the bar looks like a pretty good place to hang out. Not ostentatious, but still expressing a very tasteful, high-class place to go. And yet, it's still not out of the price range of the everyman. Inside, you'll find red carpets, gold and silver trim, wood accents, leather-upholstered furniture, flat-panel plasma televisions on each of four walls... all the typical stuff you'd find more at place in a casino bar than one bordering on the western city limits of Southtown.

One of the usual barkeeps is handling the drinks tonight -- he'd been on for most of the past two weeks, as one of the more personable and favorite bartenders -- as well as the former owner -- is taking a break. Right now, he's lounging on one of the couches, right arm and hand still bandaged up as he pretends to pay attention to the sporting event currently on television. He couldn't begin to explain the rules to the event, since he really doesn't care -- he's just sitting out here because it got boring sitting in his office. Sharing idle chit-chat with the other customers gathered around, the man known simply as "Chen" gives friendly smiles to darn near everyone. It's his job, really.

It's been a long trail -- with very few clues along the way. But, starting with little more than a physical description provided by Hyo, Jinmu Tetsunagi has come this far -- to some bar on the outskirts of Southtown. Somehow, he figured he'd wind up in a place like this. He's an odd sight as he steps up to the front door; a young man, clearly not quite old enough to drink, dressed in some sort of pretty school uniform... and carrying a wooden bow, nearly eight feet long. Yeah, he's not the usual sort of patron you'd find at a bar like this. Or any bar, really.

Slipping into the front door without obstacle, Jinmu shoulders his bow, moving quickly across the bar floor until he finds the nearest person who looks like an employee; a waitress, or something. "Excuse me," he begins, subtly shifting his bow behind his back to play down the fact that he's somewhat heavily armed, "I'm looking for a man who works here. Average height, short hair. He might be from mainland Asia. He's a fighter."

Closest employee's going to be the bartender -- a slender Japanese man with short hair and average height. "Er... well, there's not really a -whole- lot of people who work here..." he starts.

The man on the couch glances over to Jinmu and the bartender, waving cheerily. He does that to all the customers.

Once the barkeep notices the wave, he inclines his head in Chen's direction. "The man over there works here, but he's on vacation at the moment. Is that who you're looking for?"

Chen himself seems to be saving the bartender the trouble of asking any more questions. "Hello there, young man!" It's not often he gets visits from high schoolers, after all. "Looking for someone, are you?" It's a guess, since he didn't hear the full conversation. "We have all kinds of people who pass through those doors, but I tend to have a pretty good recollection of them just the same."

Jinmu reaches into his jacket pocket and produces a small piece of paper -- folded up. He begins to unfold it, carefully, and then takes a glance at it. And then, slowly, looks up and towards Chen. Back to the paper, and then back to Chen. And then he just nods to the bartender, smiling happily. "Yes, I think that's the person. Thank you for the help, sir." Nodding his head, the archer turns on a heel, walking quickly towards Chen and Chen's couch, addressing the Chinese gentleman directly.

"Yes. Yes, I am looking for someone. It's pretty important that I find him, too. I have a couple things I need to talk to him about." Jinmu smiles again. He's very nearly as full of happy as Chen is, it seems. Very quickly, Jinmu dips a hand into his breast pocket, pulling out the piece of paper and unfolding it, and then looking at it carefully again... before holding it up for Chen to see it.

Sure enough, it's a sketch of Chen, done in 'police artist' sort of style... only much more detailed. And almost perfectly accurate. "Have you seen this man anywhere?"

Chen smiles broadly at Jinmu, leaning against the back of the couch as he takes the picture, idly glancing it over. Yes, it's a perfect likeness... but still, Chen's got a pretty good poker face. "Why, yes, I believe I see him once every day. Quite a handsome fellow too, I might add!" Handing the picture back to Jinmu, he shrugs lightly. "Why don't we step into the back office for a moment? Unless your questions are of the 'what's my favorite food' variety, of course?" He inclines his head towards the back hallway.

Jinmu looks over his shoulder, and sees something. He looks over his other shoulder, and he sees something else. Bar patrons, namely. As such, the archer nods, politely. "Yes, that'd probably be a good idea. I'm glad I finally found the person I was looking for. It's been a long search, to say the least. I was starting to think I'd -never- find him." Jinmu leans back, giving Chen plenty of room to get up and make his way to the back hallway; if so, he'll follow, rather obediently. No signs of trouble yet, at least.

Chen makes his way to the back room, unlocking the door to his office and motioning the boy inside. "Please, have a seat and make yourself at home. Coffee? Tea?" It seems he's already committed himself to the former, as he approaches a teapot and pours himself a small cup of genmai-cha. Closing the door with his foot, he prepares Jinmu's drink -- if one is asked for -- and tilts his head to the side. "What business would you have with 'this person?'" he asks, still preferring to leave himself as the third person as long as Jinmu continues to keep it up.

"Oh, no, thank you. I'm not thirsty." Jinmu steps into the office, looking around the room first and foremost. He didn't like the dimensions of it. Way too small, especially for his tastes. "And, well, I'd like to challenge you to a fight. Just a quick spar. I think it might help me find this person. You see, I'm not quite one hundred percent certain I've found him, and I certainly don't want to make a mistake." One of Jinmu's hands quickly rises up to his duffel quiver, unzipping the top with one smooth movement. "So, do you think you might be interested in something like that? I've heard that you're a capable fighter." Jinmu still sounds perfectly polite and sociable... but something in his voice indicates that he may not really be giving Chen an option.

.. A-ha. That's what seemed funny about all this. Chen raises an eyebrow at the request, then shrugs with a smile as he waves his hand gingerly. "I'm really not all that capable. Just a simple bartender, really." For what it's worth, the office is really -much- too small for a reasonable fight -- there's barely enough room to lay the bow out end-to-end, let alone swing it in any kind of direction without hitting a desk or something. "And really, I understand you're an archer, hmm? Is that your fighting style? I can't see how that would really be a 'fair' fight, without weapons of my own." Chuckling lightly, he seems to be giving that 'I really wish I could help you' vibe, without really saying anything.

"Well, in that case..." Jinmu hasn't yet taken his bow off of his back, where it's strapped somewhat awkwardly. "... I don't have to use the bow. I'm not really interested in winning. There's just something I want to see." Jinmu holds both palms, to show that he's /not/ going for his bow. "We could step outside, if you wanted."

"Certainly!" Though he can't see that it'd be all that fruitful. He nods back in reply, extending a hand to indicate the door for Jinmu. He's not sure -quite- what Jinmu's after, but with one more question, he feels like he might have a lead. "I have one question for you, though. Which school's uniform is that? It's not often we have high school customers, so please forgive my ignorance..."

Jinmu opens the door quickly -- he barely got into the room, really -- and takes a step outside before he turns out, pinching the fabric of his uniform and holding it up. "Oh, this? This is the Justice High uniform." He smiles again, and starts to slowly walk towards the front, his back turned towards Chen for the moment.

Attack the boy from behind? Why on earth would Chen have an idea like that? It crossed his mind, certainly, though he's going to try diplomacy first. That tends to be the best way to deal with people who might be a good deal stronger than him, after all. He follows Jinmu out to the street, folding his hands before him as he walks in typical Chinaman fashion. "I see! I wasn't particularly familiar with the colors before."

Jinmu eventually finds himself out on the street, his breath condensing momentarily -- almost like a dragon exhaling. Turning to face Chen, the youth holds up both of his hands in what looks... some kind of martial arts stance. Only, it's not. In fact, any practitioner of martial arts would point out more than a half-dozen things that are /very wrong/ with Jinmu's stance. He's basically just standing upright and holding both hands at the ready. Apparently, whoever this kid is, he probably doesn't know much about fighting that doesn't have to do with archery. "Are you ready? I don't want to take you by surprise, or anything."

Chen says, "Certainly not!" He gingerly adopts a boxer's stance, balling his fists and bouncing about on his toes as he finds an appropriate location in the side parking lot. "You'll have to forgive me, though, I've forgotten much of what I'd learned in college." Passing a friendly smile, he seems perfectly comfortable with the boxer's stance -- especially in comparison to his opponent's stance. "I'm ready whenever you are!""

Jinmu nods his head, smiling. "Okay. Good. Ready? Let's go!" Jinmu rather abruptly darts straight ahead forward, his bow flapping agains this back. He's /quick/. Even if he has no clue how to stand, he's got some speed, that's for sure. Closing in on Chen like a dart, Jinmu drags both arms before him as he goes, his right palm perfectly straight and momentarily... glowing, faintly? The moment he's close -- really close -- he sweeps his arm out straight ahead, and sends something -- it's not easy to see, but it seems vaguely bluish in color -- sweeping towards Chen. While what it looks like might be a mystery, what it FEELS like is not: Wherever Jinmu's sweeping attack makes contact, it'll feel just like being shot with an arrow.

Narrowing his eyes at the apparent attack, Chen raises his hands to block -- and indeed makes what -seems- to be a sincere attempt at blocking it. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much guard against the attack, which goes slamming over his fists, nailing him square in the chest. He stumbles backwards, glaring down at the impact wound -- though finds nothing there. Laughing lightly, he adds, "Heh... pretty snazzy attack there!" But rather than just stand there in impressed awe, he launches forward with a quick one-two combo of his own -- first a sharp left hook, then a right uppercut aimed at unsettling the boy's chin.

And unsettled... indeed. Jinmu takes that hit /hard/ on the chin, finding himself rocked backwards by the force inherent in Chen's fist. Staggering back a little Jinmu rubs at his chin, elarly more than a little pained by it. "That style of yours... it's Wing Chun, isn't it? I've been doing some studying on it, lately." Jinmu smirks, holding up his fists again. "Honestly, I'm a little bit of a one-trick pony without my bow... but I'm not sure I've found the person I'm looking for, yet. Not one hundred percent, anyways." And then... /whoosh/. Jinmu takes off towards Chen, but this time dives right /past him/. Stopping himself with a skid and suddenly doubling back, Jinmu dives towards Chen's rear this time, repeating the same bizarre arrow-like technique from earlier. ... only this time, it'll be even harder to see before it happens.

It's not, really. It's much more of a traditional boxer's style -- and it shows, from the way he seems to be relying on his forearms for guard rather than batting the blows away with his wrists. Whatever Wing Chun may have been attributed to him would no doubt have been based in rumor, rather than on the style he's displaying here -- which shows from the way Chen is a bit sluggish to react to Jinmu's sudden movements, pivoting only at the last moment -- just in time to get pegged in the shoulder by the mysteriously-arrow-shaped impact. "Ow! That's... that's quite a technique! Though I'm afraid that's not it ... Olympic-style boxing, actually!" He takes a quick jab with one hand, before following through with a straight blow to Jinmu's chest with the other, breathing out sharply - like a boxer - in the process.

"... Ow!" This time, Jinmu gets nailed once again, before he has time to get out of melee range. Jinmu, clearly, simply doesn't shine in close range. Falling backwards with a bit of a thud, the archer hits the ground, tumbling back just a little bit. "... That one hurt." Climbing up to his feet and dusting himself off, Jinmu just sighs a little bit. "I don't suppose I can risk this much longer... I may as well get to what I really wanted to ask you." Staying where he is, Jinmu reaches behind his back, going for his bow. "I was hoping to be able to win without this thing. Looks like that's not going to be possible. Or at least, not easy. So... forgive me. But. I wanted to ask you... what do you know about Hyo Imawano's framing?" Jinmu almost immediately takes a shot with his arrow, aiming right for Chen's right thigh. "I'm curious."

Here Chen even asked -politely- and everything, and yet the boy still pulls out the bow and arrow. Narrowing his eyes once more, he leaps backwards, still keeping both fists at the ready despite his sudden shift away from a true boxer's stance. A watchful eye might note that he's quicker than he's letting on. Feet skidding on the pavement as he lands, the low-aimed shot whizzing right past him and embedding into the pavement, he shakes his head. "Imawano? Who's that? You'll have to forgive my ignorance of current events." Eyeing the arrow, he shrugs lightly. "If you're going to continue this senseless aggression, though, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." A true businessman at heart?

Jinmu sighs a little bit as Chen doesn't go on ahead with the fighting. "I was afraid of this. See, I feel guilty about all of this already. I'm really very sorry. But Hyo-sempai gave me a very clear description of what you looked like. He's a very good artist, as you saw. But... Well, I shouldn't have promised not to use my bow to get you outside and away from the people inside. I didn't want to break my word. But, if it helps Hyo-sempai... well, I guess I'll have to. I'm really sorry. After you tell me what I need to know, I'll find a way to make it up to you, somehow. I'll pay your hospital bills and then some." And then Jinmu holds his bow up once again, eyes hard as he releases an arrow at Chen's collarbone. "So, where were we? Hyo Imawano. I want to know what you know about him."

Holding his two fists in ready position, he swivels his head and shoulders out of the way, letting the arrow whizz by. More typical of a boxer's reaction to an archer than the last evasion, but still... the conversation seems to be vexing him somewhat. "Perhaps you should begin by listening to the questions asked of you before repeating yourself needlessly. I still have no idea who this 'Hyo Imawano' character is." Ducking low, he rushes forward in what seems like it might be another punch -- but instead, his hand lashes out to grab the front of the longbow. And, should he catch hold, Jinmu may find that Chen is much -stronger- than his lightweight frame suggests, as the Chinaman attempts to loose the archer's grip upon his weapon.

Jinmu loses his bow, and finds himself sent to the ground in quick time. He can't dodge this guy, whoever he is. Tossed to the floor, Jinmu remains where he lay, not, apparently, reacting. He has no bow, once again. But, slowly, he raises his arms, still laying flat on the ground, and taking aim at Chen. It's sort of like 'air guitar'... only, 'air bow'. "Damn. ... I was too hasty to fight you, I guess. But I can't give up. Listen..." And then he 'releases' the string of a bow that doesn't exist. And Chen may feel something. He /may/. If, that is, he doesn't take note of the odd shimmer in the air before Jinmu. If he doesn't? Chen will find himself quickly pierced, in the stomach, by an arrow that simply doesn't exist.

Jinmu says, "I'm sorry for being so insistent... but once again. What do you know about Hyo Imawano?"

Once more he's placed on the defensive against an arrow -- though this time, Chen doesn't have an arrow to -block-. How curious! Rather than simply take the metaphysical arrow to the stomach, the Chinaman drops his shoulder, taking the blow there instead. "I refuse to answer that question until you answer my own." Level-headed, collected, and with only the slightest touch of irritation in his voice, Chen answers the charge -- but rather than launch out with another punch, he flips the bow around and wields it like a rapier, aiming to 'stab' Jinmu with his own weapon.

Jinmu seizes his bow when it's used to attack him snatching it and taking tight hold of it. "I'm sorry. But I simply don't believe you when you say that you don't know who Hyo-sempai is. If I'm mistaken... then I really, truly, am sorry. But in the defense of Hyo-sempai, there are few sacrifices I won't make." With a lightning fast motion of his hand, Jinmu unstrings one end of the bowstring... the string under extremely high tension. What's more, he aims it in such a way that the string snaps right towards Chen's own grip. If Chen moves his hands, he'll hopefully lose his grip on the bow. If not, he'll probably be forced to let go, just by reflex alone.

Jinmu gets his bow free, taking one swift step backwards as he restrings it in a flash. With speed like that... he truly is a master of his craft. Taking aim once more, Jinmu nocks a single arrow, drawing it back carefully. "The students of Justice High stand together, even when they are separated -- even if they're divided by metal bars! For Hyo-sempai's honor, I will show someone like /you/ my perfect shot." Drawing the arrow back almost as though he is a harp player plucking a string... before releasing that arrow, like a bullet, towards his target.

Chen keeps his grip on the bow, which leads to him getting -burned- by the lashing string. Jerking his hands away in reflex, he rubs his knuckles and stares back at the the boy. He ... can only raise an eyebrow in confusion in response, though the arrow -does- crash into its target, just as planned. That being his chest, most likely. Chen gets -slammed- by the arrow, getting knocked back against the wall of his bar, arms flailing out to the side -- he'd made a token attempt to dodge, but fruitless just the same. Slumping forward afterwards, he seems... a bit incredulous. "... Is he a Justice High student, then? I'm terribly sorry you went through all this trouble of beating me up for naught..." Looking down at the arrow, he touches it tentatively with one hand, before sinking to his knees. "... Oh dear. I believe I'm going to have to take you up on your offer of first aid."

Jinmu takes aim... again. Even against an opponent who seems to be defeated, Jinmu is still aiming. "It isn't that simple. I'm really, really, sorry, once again. But now, I'm certain that I'm not mistaken. You concealed it well, but... Hyo is very observant, and so am I. I was sure before, and I'm sure now." Jinmu begins to approach, slowly, his arrow aimed at Chen. "I want you to tell me who is responsible for framing Hyo Imawano, or I am going to shoot you again. I don't want to, but this is what Hyo-sempai instructed me to do: Clear his name. I will do so no matter what. I know your name, now, and I know the name of the other gentleman involved. Tell me more. Please."

Chen normally smiles. A lot. He's been frowning all through the match, though that was more of a pitiful aberrance, in hindsight. A contrivance, which he sees no need to continue any longer. He boldly smiles once more, shrugging. "I have no idea who your Hyo-sempai is," he states firmly, "and I don't know the circumstances of the supposed 'framing' of which you speak. I... do suggest you leave before the friendly police officers get involved. For you are, as of this moment, trespassing. And the local police department smiles upon establishments such as my own." If you catch his drift.

"I don't really know how the gangs work in Southtown... there are probably a few of them." Twang. That's the sound of Jinmu shooting Chen in the leg, as though just to show that he's serious. "And I'm really, really, sorry about that." Sorry, but already nocking another arrow and taking aim. He's still polite, too, matching Chen tat-for-tat. "But, realize this... if the police /do/ arrive, you will, at the very least, have to be brought in for questioning. And they'll bring you to the police station." Jinmu allows a pause. "Where Hyo-sempai is, in other words." Aiming, Jinmu continues. "It may be easier for you to just tell me who I need to pay a visit to next."

As the bow twangs, an arrow whistling into his leg, Chen chokes back only a small gasp of pain. "You seem terribly distraught. Perhaps you should come back with a subpoena if you plan to be doing any legal challenges today, and... do realize that your continual assault will reflect very poorly upon your permanent record, young man. Or should I say... juvenile delinquent." Smiling, he tilts his head to the side. "... I have the right to remain silent, and to speak with an attorney. I shall be exercising the first for the remainder of this conversation, so please do your worst." Chen's awfully resilent under duress. ... Besides, with too much more of this abuse, Chen might just go unconscious -- which would be an even -easier- way of avoiding questioning. C'mon, push it.

Jinmu shakes his head, politely. "I'm not a police officer. You have the option of remaining silent, sure, but I also have the option of shooting you. But this is also a fight. You fought back, and you fought back quite well. So... you may have trouble proving that you're being assaulted as you claim. And... as far as the law goes..." Jinmu sighs, sounding downright depressed. And then he shoots Chen in the other leg. "... I'm operating under instructions from Hyo Imawano. Didn't I tell you? Justice High students stand together. The student body comes before the law, when I have better reason to trust my own judgement than that of the law."

=Thunk=. Another arrow whistles into his leg, and he seems equally unperturbed. "Very well. Would you like to escort me to the police station, then? I'm sure they would be very happy to listen to your side of things considering the three arrows sticking out of me now. And I'd be more than happy to repeat your little statement just now." He reaches into his jacket pocket, retrieving a slender, silver cellular phone. Flipping it open, he holds the phone on display. "Or perhaps you'd like to call them yourselves?"

Jinmu sighs, again. He's getting nowhere fast, with this. His skill as a torturer leaves a great deal to be desired. Arrows aren't the most painful method of injuring someone, and Jinmu simply doesn't seem to have the temperment for something like that. "... Oh, well. I had hoped to handle the situation on my own. I'm sorry. I guess you win." Jinmu reaches down, abruptly, with one hand... then starts taking his arrows back. There aren't /too/ many of them, and they aren't broadheads (another testamaent to Jinmu's lack of interest in causing pain) so they come out without much trouble or pain. Once he has his bloody arrows collected, Jinmu shrugs again. "I'm sorry for all of the trouble. I'll come back when I think of a better strategy, maybe." And then, pretty simply... he just up and strolls off. He seems disappointed, though, and he's certainly walking off like a kicked puppy.

"Very well, then! It was a pleasure meeting you, sir! Do come again!" He refuses to acknowledge any kind of 'victory' -- seeing that he didn't really win anything other than stalling for time. That's all this is anyway -- and besides, there's not a single piece of evidence linking Chen to the crime other than Hyo's drawing and testimony. By design, really. Bison, sure. But Jinmu will have to try a lot harder than that to get justice enforced without the law looking the other way, in this town. Chen, despite being about to pass out from the 'conversation', leans against the building and hits two numbers on autodial. "... Yes. I... wonder if you'd mind stepping outside and hauling me back to my office? There seems to have been a little accident."
