SNF 2005.01 - Heavy D! vs Kelvin

Description: Saturday Night Fever! Heavy D! and Kelvin go head to head in a second string, but still hard-fought, battle. Accused at first of being a slacker, Kelvin proves himself in the course of battle against the battle-hardened veteran boxer. (Draw)

Whereas most of the world is occupied with their own affairs, or the latest results from the current Strolheim-sponsored contest, an old tradition is being revisited once again. It's time for the semi-weekly, Saturday -- sometimes Sunday -- Night Fights. Even though the small crowd that's watching outside the Arena are mostly the people that couldn't gain access to one of the other venues presently or soon to be underway, it's a small crowd nonetheless..there's even a few faithful particular to the two participants. For Heavy D!, there's some rowdy omni-sport fans, wearing sports jerseys of various sorts, and appear about as interested in their cooler of alcoholic drinks as the fight itself. For Kelvin.. ..well..there's got to be one or two out there, doesn't there?

Ah, yes, that nominally drowsy-looking young man, now making his way through the crowd with his hands in his pocket, a peaceful look about him with his eyes closed. How exactly he avoids bumping into anyone, walking around like that, is still pretty much a mystery. Once he's made his way out to the roped off area that will be forming the makeshift arena, outside the building proper, he cracks his eyes open to slits, and starts glancing around. His roommate's told him a bit about what he can expect -- a nearly relentless offense, and a very well conditioned athlete. He'll definitely have his hands full.

Well, D! was supposed to be in Strolheim to prepare for the big tournament, but how could he pass up the Saturday Night Fight? Looking around at the crowd waiting for the fight set outside of the Arena, he frowns. His opponent doesn't seem to be particularly too into the match. That seems to be tell him that the kid's not taking this fight seriously. "Hey. You better wake up. YOu signed up for this, you better be ready to do it," he says, shaking his head at Kelvin before he puts up his fists for a stance.

Unknown to D!, Kelvin in fact takes a lot of his fights seriously, though serious for him is a bit different than for most people. While many fighters let their adrenaline control their actions in battle, he prefers to keep both mind and body in check, and as synchronized as possible; at least, that's what he's working on. His body still lags behind considerably, which is a weakness and an endless source of trouble. "Sorry if it comes off that way," he says, apologetically, taking his hands out so that his arms can drape limply at his sides..before he flexes them a bit, and gets them ready. "I'm not very hot-blooded, I guess.. ..but be assured, you'll get my best." Setting his feet, his posture still says that he's way too relaxed to really be ready for a brawl with a world-class boxer..but when his eyes open even more, and his facial expression changes to a more serious and focused one, it's clear that he's done with any pre-battle rituals.

Shaking his head again, D! watches Kelvin as he, in his own way, prepares for the fight. Once he gets a look at his expression, Heavy sees that the kid, for all his slouching, is still ready to fight. "Alright, if you say so." Tightening his fists a few times, he watches the jerseyed kid, scanning him for openings...or in this case, places where he DOESN'T seem open. FInally, with a stomp off the ground, he runs, the crowd cheering as the match officially gets underway. D! doesn't run for long, quickly dropping to his knees and sliding forward at Kelvin to give him a quick, low strike to his stomach.

Kelvin was prepared for this.. ..and the first charging attack pretty much proves out what his roommate had told him before the fight. However, early reconnaisance can only prepare you for so much. The youth's slow reaction speed lets him meet D!'s forward momentum with just a small margin of comfort; and it's only with double-braced forearms that he manages to keep it from breaking through. Despite this, he hadn't quite prepared for the shockwave that follows, as the boxer's hit rattles through his small frame. Even effectively blocked, that felt like getting struck by a freight train! "...Nn," he exhales, with just a bit of exertion..but for all that effort expended, doesn't break his 'game face' just yet. Hopefully for Kelvin, before his opponent can recover, the boy's hands are already in motion themself, aiming to try and warp around one muscular arm and use the combination of mass for leverage, to bring him down on the spot. Not exactly how he'd prefer to do this, since he has a poor track record with 'big guys', but..until he figures a more effective strategy, he has to take what he can get.

If the kid had trouble with big men, he doesn't show it with Heavy D! As a matter of fact, he seems to do just what D! didn't expect: use his low momentum to drive him into the ground, facefirst. Crashing painfully into the street, D! over ont his back, face reddened by the impact. "GNrhrhg...that hurt," he mutters, twisting and looking back at Kelvin. "Ok...that was a nice move, kid. Maybe you're more awake than I gave credit for," he says. Of course, he doesn't praise him long, for he quickly swings his arm over head and tries to drive a nice haymaker into Kelvin's chest from his low position.

Or maybe he *isn't*, and just got lucky. For whatever reason on the disparity, Kelvin isn't fast enough to shift into a position to fend off what follows. Not expecting Heavy D! to make an attack from such an angle atypical of fighters of his style, as well as still having not recovered from his last attack attempt, makes for a bad combination, at any rate. The punch ends up hitting him full force, giving his opponent a rare glimpse at his eyes fully open for a moment as they all but bug out in surprise, before he ends up prone on the ground himself, now, after arcing through the air from the force. Accursed physics! To his credit, despite quite effectively knocking the air out of him, within a breath or two he's caught up on that, and has already hopped back to his feet..still seemingly relaxed. He's not as fragile as he looks, which should satisfy D! Wordlessly, and without a seeming second thought, Kelvin suddenly darts forward in his own rushing attack, leaving the air at the last moment to try and catch D!'s shoulder with his own, which would theoretically unsettle him enough for a followup grab and release. You guessed it, another throw..but with the bonus of the setup tackle, tailor made for cases just like this.

Standing after sending Kelvin to the ground, D! watches the kid get up, a lot quicker than expected. And then the kid finally makes an active move himself, D!'s eyes focused on the shock of blue racing toward him. Seeing little room to move out of the way, the boxer simply waits for the kid. ONce the shoulder drive comes, D! stomps forward himself, moving with the throw that Kelvin follows up with. While he hits the ground hard again, he's able to hang on to Kelvin, keeping his arm locked with the kid's long enough to pull himself up with. Once he's up to his feet again, his free fist races toward Kelvin's gut, trying to send him up in the air with the punch long enough to heft him by that very fist and send him over his shoulder with a nice back slam.

He was expecting to let go of Heavy D! at the end of his own attack..and get ready to hop back to his feet after to try and get distance again. However, what hadn't been anticipated is the boxer quite effectively rolling with it, and actually keeping hold of his arm..whether he liked it or not. D! is, well..Heavy..heavy enough to drag Kelvin down with him, and thanks to the awkward and unexpected position, and with one of his arms incapable of helping out so quickly, the result is as devestating as could be expected. With his light weight, he's sent sailing from the force of the first hit, and caught up by the followup..is sent arcing even further back, to land on the pavement behind with considerable force. Kelvin, himself.. ..well, he's not down yet, but after that exchange, he's quite aware that he can't take too many more like that. Physical strength combined with unexpected speed.. ..it's quite a challenge. Once again, however, Kelvin picks himself up..and once again, he is on the attack. At first stomach down, he quickly springs himself up with one arm, sets his feet, and with a little spin move, is already back on D! It seems at first to be a normal punch..and with the size difference, that would likely be pretty ineffective. But, time for a little experiment; as the fist is swinging around, it's surrounded by a field of small globules of energy, ones that seem to be created and subsequently explode in some random sequence around the balled up hand. Hence, it's not so much his punch that's now swining towards D!, but the sphere of small 'bomblets' surrounding it..ones that are likely vaguely felt before they even get close. The boy's eyebrows furrow..this still isn't something he's used to doing.

Turning around after the successful toss overhead, D! watches the jerseyed slacker kick struggle and finally get up to his feet. Noticing the 3-point stance he takes, D! braces his feet, expecting a straight out tackle. While it's not a tackle that comes, his preparation helps him lessen the damage the takes from the bomblets chucked at him as they pop and explode against his arm. "Nng....nice try, kid," he says, before he swings out a hard straight at Kelvin, trying to pop him right in the face with a heavy-handed left.

Even though the move fueled primarily by the strange energy wasn't quite as effective as Kelvin would have liked, it actually did its job admirably. It put some distance between him and Heavy D!, as it was threatening to turn into a brawl..and that's a war that Kelvin would lose handily by physics alone. Instead, he's left standing, and having finally caught his breath from his earlier misstep, appears ready to deal with what's coming his way. That quite powerful fist, threatening to pulverize him if it gets too close. Luckily for Kelvin, it doesn't.. ..he's there to meet it, and with a renewed focus in his eyes, his own arm is already rushing forward to meet D!'s. Is he going for the double knockout!? Nope.. ..in a split second, his hand seeks to find its way around the boxer's wrist, and Kelvin steps to the side. The full force of D!'s swing is used to send *him* flying this time, with a half-circle, back the way he came. Hopefully, he won't be sent into any nearby property...he'd hate to foot the bill.

THAT....D! did not expect. All the force he put behind his heavy punch is summarily swung past the target, then back where the boxer had stood, the twist of his wrist sending him flipping back to fall right on his neck and shoulders. "GHNnn..." Another kid who's handy with countering attacks, it seems. Grunting, the boxer, sits up, shaking the cobwebs out of his head and the kinks out of his neck. "Damn," he mutters, pushing himself up to his feet before turning back to the slakcer. "Ok...I see that you're not just some slacker kid," he says. Which means guess what? Time for some serious payback. Rushing forward, D! tries to catch Kelvin with a swift rushing left body blow. What follows is an array of jabs, hooks, straights, and finally, a double set of lunging straights, meant to send the kid away into the boundaries of their fighting area with forceful strikes.

It's no time for celebration. The fight is still well underway, and neither fighter is down for the count, so to speak. This fact is made all too clear to Kelvin, as he's left to deal with the consequences; a very agitated D! who decides that he's about had enough of taking it easy on the runt. To his credit, he has his feet to try something in return, despite the startling speed and ferocity that the boxer closes in on him with, but whatever it was, the crowd isn't going to see it right now. The series of blows from D! all catch him more or less on target, setting him up for the finale, the pair of forward punches knocking him back like a rag doll, and almost sending him out into a few spectators. After that, he *doesn't* get up quite as quickly, sitting up and shaking his head clear.. ..you'd almost have expected big colorful splash screens with 'BIFF!' and 'SLAM!' to appear, like an old school Batman episode. Instead of rushing straight back into it, he appears to be left with only enough time to pick himself up, and try to get back into his zone.

HeavyD grins, watching Kelvin get tossed off to the ground by his strikes. Wow, they actually worked. Stepping back as Kelvin picks himself out of the crowd, he calms himself down, tightening his stance and watching the jerseyed kid recover. "You ready yet, or do you need some more time?"

COMBATSYS: HeavyD focuses on his next action.

Oh, he's always ready. At least, mentally. Physically is another matter entirely. After a few more moments of catching his wind, and bringing his body back fully under his control, doing his best to put the pain off to deal with later..his face breaks out of the seriousness for a moment to break into a smile more like the one he was wearing when he came in. "I'm fine, nothing I can't sleep off later," he notes, not to belittle D!'s strength and skill..quite the contrary. While he makes it a point not to underestimate anyone, he wasn't quite expecting a boxer to display this much method behind the madness. "Well then, prepare yourself." With that said, Kelvin breaks the momentary lull in activity, and expecting D! to likewise be at the ready, he takes a step forward, a step that quickly turns into a short sprint. As he approaches D!, he suddenly stops on a dime, and attempts to give him a taste of a variant of something he got introduced to earlier. This time, with Kelvin's own momentum placed into the drop, rather than relying on brute strength..though perhaps with a bit less of the element of surprise to assist, at this point.

Keeping his focus keened on Kelvin, D! watches the kid approach and sprint at him. He prepares, but then nearly balks as the kid stops suddenly. It's a good thing he doesn't completely drop his guard, though, as the sudden momentum transfer causes him to fall back. Tucking in his legs, he flips over just enough to cushion his hard fall with his arms. Unfortunately, the drop jars his shoulders enough to make it hard to get up at first. "Wow...you're godo with those throws," he compliments. Getting up to his feet, he watches the not-quite-a-slacker with a furrowed brow, trying to think of what to pull next. Finally, he drives forward, advancing on Kelvin until he starts whipping out a fast, chi-augmented series of swift, shadowed jabs, ending with a hard, shortened uppercut to the jaw.

Well, he has to be good with the throws. Considering his lean body with hardly any but the most wirey muscle to be found on it, it's about all he's got in the world-class leagues. At least he doesn't seem too boastful, as it's seldom when he'll even speak in the middle of a fight. And D! thought he wasn't serious! "Thanks, I do my best. You live up to your reputation as a world-class athlete, Mister D!." And so modest and courteous, as well! Even though it's stated rather plainly, as most of his focus is thrown into dealing with what's coming next. Once again, it's about all that he can do to try and avoid taking as much damage as possible, his slow and relatively weak arms only able to fend off some, while the rest of the jabs soak through. The primary uppercut, thankfully for Kelvin, glances off a well-placed forearm..but despite his defense, he's feeling his strength slowly deplete. Hopefully he can end it soon, one way or the other. While D!'s still in the motion of his final, brutish uppercut, Kelvin tries once again to use his best weapon available; a throw. His hands reach out at the apex of the deflected punch, and try to take hold of his wrist or forearm -- whatever's most handy. Then, he tries to use the leverage gained to try and start swinging Heavy D! around in that dreaded half-circle again.. ..yeah, this isn't exactly his ideal situation, since he's primarily using his own muscle to try and make it work. But at this point in the fight, he feels that he can ill afford not to take the gamble.

The dreaded half-spin is pulled off, Kelving grabbing the boxer's arm after his uppercut and sending him stumbling. HOwever, this time, D! anticipates what's to come and jams his foot down, shunting his momentum at the expense of his knees. While he still falls forward, he manages to catch himself on his hands, wrists tensing. No more words to waste here. Pushing himself up before his injuries can really get to him, and the adrenaline fades, D! buckles down and drives after Kelvin again, lunging out with a punch yet again much like he finished his D. Crazy with. However, this time, one might see an ethereal sheath of chi surrounding his limb as it drives toward Kelvin.

Likewise, Kelvin is feeling the hurt.. ..you don't take hits like this and not have some lingering effects. He feels, frankly, like he's been run over by a truck. Or maybe a steam roller. While he's still on his feet when the punch rockets its energy-charged way towards him, he apparently runs out of defensive juice at just the wrong moment..and it catches him square in the chest, causing him to double over on it. However, there's still a bit of activity, and despite his fading consciousnes and will to go on, he actually reaches out to try and hold on to the arm that just punched him. Rather than disconnect cleanly, in this case, he then attempts to get his feet set, and then fall to the ground, which he hopes would send D! flying from the combined force remaining from his punch, and gravity jerking Kelvin down. Regardless of the result, it ends that Kelvin eventually falls to the ground, breathing heavily and deeply, but still semi-conscious. It was a great fight, a real workout.

HeavyD unfortunately is a bit too battered and strained to stop the drag-a-long that Kelvin tries on him. Even as he tries to set his feet down, he ends up getting flung forward, dropping forward into t he ground with a pained thud. As both fighters go down.. ..and don't get back up, what spectators there were go silent. You can practically hear a cricket chirping. However, soon after, they erupt into applause. Draws are always good because you know both gave it their all, and there's no lingering bad feelings over it..well..not often. Eventually, the always handy medical crew assigned by the fight organizers comes out and makes with carrying both of them off the pavement -- on stretchers, for safety's sake -- and the resident announcer notes, "So, it ends with a double knockout! Let's have another round of applause for these two valiant fighters!" Yeah, it's one of the second stringers, but they do their best to sound professional, while the two are carted off to the locket rooms for some rest and patching up of wounds. Eventually, the maintenance crew comes out and removes the ropes, and the crowd files away to go back to whatever other business they have.
