Neo League 0165 - NL#0173: Juliet vs Tarmo
[Toggle Names]Description: Meeting on the street after an enforced break from her trials within the Neo League, Juliet is eager to get back up to fighting fitness against Tarmo! The bearish Finn enters with a bright attitude and sticky fingers, but can his greater size, reach and experience match up to The Boxing Angel and her boundless spirit?!
[TARMO]
A lot of the fights in the current season of Neo League have taken place in elaborate arenas, both official and unofficial. But not all can get such glory, unfortunately. Sometimes, the officials arranging matches do call for more... 'natural' environments for the bouts.
Not that they don't go out of their way to make a huge show out of it, anyway. An usually-busy street in the heart of Southtown has been blocked off from foot and car traffic both, with the buildings surrounded - some partially damaged still from the more unfortunate recent events - lined up with advertisements from various sponsors of the league for all spectators to see in both the physical sidelines (and through some of the windows?!) and through the broadcast feeds in television sets across the world. A lot of it has to do with the various charities set up for supporting the various aspect of the Southtown Restoration Project, too, courtesy of the previous season's champion.
Even if you can't have a proper ring, it doesn't mean the fight can't be glamorous and over-promoted to hell and back, afterall.
One of the two fighters slated for this particular match didn't get the memo on the whole 'glamorous' thing, though, no. For not only is the Bear Finn late to the match by roughly three minutes-- but when the enormous form of Tarmo does finally (and suddenly!) come leaping over one of the barriers set up, he's come there with...
A takeaway box from some korean bbq joint.
"SORRY!" The Finn roars out before anyone even has the chance to point out to him that he was not here at the previously-agreed-upon time. "I got lost!"
...The food he brought along surely couldn't have anything to do with it either, right?
Either way, the nordic, bearded beast comes stomping further down from the barrier, even while picking out some slices of beef from the box, closer towards the center of the street. Still in that very dubious outfit choice of a heavy field jacket with a fur-lined hood that is most definitely not suitable for current weather conditions, and his broadly-muscled chest and abs deliberately left exposed from underneath it.
[JULIET]
Times have not been easy for Juliet. An explosive entrance into the League, albeit one without any wins under her belt, and a bout on the popular Saturday Night Fight have taken a heavy toll on the girl. She had, quite simply, burned too bright too fast. It resulted in her last match being little more than a knock-down, drag out slugfest with both fighters pummeling each other in a display that critics had described as 'sloppy' and 'brutal'. It certainly hadn't matched up to her image, and afterwards she had been taken aside by Gabriella.
A rare instance of her trainer actually putting her foot down, but there it was. A full week where she was forced to focus on her rest and recovery. She hadn't even been allowed to shadowbox. Instead, Gabriella had confined her to her motel room with only a television and a regular supply of food and treats. And her own company. They'd talked a great deal over the course of the week.
What had really struck Juliet, though, was that after the first couple of days... Derrick and Mary simply stopped trying to visit. She'd worried about that at first. If there was one thing she knew about her 'parents' it was that they were not so easily dissuaded from their meal ticket, but after a while it had been difficult to convince herself to care. Then, this morning, Gabriella had thrown her costume onto the bed and declared that it was time to get back on the horse.
Tarmo might be congenitally incapable of feeling pressure, but Juliet has a nervous energy about her as she waits for him. When he arrives, the girl stands smoothly from the chair in which she had been resting, and walks towards the man. He's got two full feet on her, but she feels... good. She feels relaxed. She feels, in other words, that she can do this.
"Ach, ye got an appetite on ye, eh big man?" She jokes, rolling her shoulder back as she sizes up her opponent. He was about what she was expecting, really. A big guy. No doubt Derrick had set this up intending to sell the spectacle; and maybe intending to humble her as well. Dennis had given her profound trouble, but what she'd realised in the aftermath of the beating was that it wasn't Dennis himself that had made her stumble so much over her performance... it was the intense desire she felt to succeed after her win. She needed to keep that ego in check, or she was going to be her own worst enemy.
"I hope ye're all full, friend, 'cuz I don't want tae hear ye blame an empty stomach when I put ye flat on yer back."
Okay. So maybe she'd keep a bit of the ego. Though the wink she gives Tarmo hopefully gets across that this is more a joke than a serious brag.
[TARMO]
"Well, 'course!" Tarmo declares to the young boxer with a wide, toothy grin -- clearly not at all aware of whatever weight Juliet may or may not be carrying on her own shoulders. In all fairness, Tarmo might not really even strike her as the kind of guy who worries all too much about things that aren't immediately ahead of him, anyway.
"You have any idea how much energy it burns up to keep all this up, yeah?" With that, he thumps his free, massive fist against his bare chest with a resounding *THUMP*. "I mean, I'm sure you do; you prolly ain't someone who just sits around doin' nuttin' between fights, either, huh?"
THe little taunting and bragging doesn't discourage the boisterously cheerful smiel on his face, either, even if his brows do lift up a bit.
"Hooo hoo," he barks out with brief laughter. "Ya got spunk in ya, huh? I like ya already."
And then, that box halfway-filled with strips of beef slathered in some korean sauce gets thrust over and downwards, towards Juliet. "And what 'bout you? You want some?"
Somewhere a few paces away, a frustrated official yells out, "YOU KNOW YOU'RE MEANT TO FIGHT, RIGHT?!"
[JULIET]
Juliet smirks at the offer, and gives a shake of her head. "Nah. Thanks fer the offer, big man, but I'm on a strict diet. Got tae make sure I keep me figure trim, y'know?" She is already starting to bounce from foot to foot - ignoring the question about what she gets up to between fights because, well, she HAS been doing nothing. But she doesn't feel self conscious about that in the least. Her life, for years, has been a constant grind of training, fights, school, chores, and more training. If Gabriella decided she had earned a few days to just let the bruises soak out of her body... she wasn't going to argue that, not at all.
She does, however, shoot the official a dirty look.
One shiny black glove raises to point towards the man, and all the good humour drains out of her in an instant. "Now you listen to me, pal." She shouts right back. "Me an' the big man are gettin' tae know one another. Ye want tae make a penny off us, you want us happy! You want tae jump in here an' take the big man's place?"
To say the official looks flustered would be an understatement. Juliet has been, largely, bouncy, happy, and excited to be taking her time in front of the camera. This burst of assertiveness has him thoroughly on the back foot, and after he fails to reply for a spluttering second, she gave a sharp nod of her head. "Aye, that's what I thought. Let the big man finish his lunch, eh? Then we'll give you a show worth seein'."
And then she's right back to bouncing, working the balls of her feet as she dances backwards. Good to her word, the team are indeed forced to give Tarmo all the time he needs to finish his lunch and get himself ready on an even footing...
And only AFTER both fighters are good and ready does the bell ring. But once it does, there's no hesitation at all in Juliet. The girl dashes forwards to close the distance between herself and the far larger fighter, fists throwing out a quick flurry of right-left-right as she works to gauge his reactions, whilst still rolling with the momentum between each punch to maintain as much movement as she can. A much more considered start than many of her fights have been!

"That right?" While Tarmo might seem a *little* disappointed that his offer has been declined, he *does* understand the reasoning behind it, too. "Shame. This tastes pretty damn good, you know?"
What does surprise the giant finn, however, is Juliet's reaction to the official after he, himself, has just dismissively waved him off. The bearded man's eyes widen down at the girl, and he's silent for a few seconds...
And then he lets out an uproarious rumble of laughter.
"You do have some bright fire in ya, indeed!" He declares in between those rumbles, grinning all the more widely down to her now. "That's good. Tell ya what--"
One last biteful of beef is brought up to be shoved into Tarmo's mouth, before he turns to stomp towards the official who had just made the hubbub about the delay in the fight. The box and what's still left in it get all but shoved at him with a growled order of, "Hold on to this!" before the Finn turns back to stomp Juliet's way.
"Whoever wins can finish that meal off," he offers, rubbing his hand over the other to audibly pop at his knuckles while he's approaching. "And don't go arguin' about a diet or whatever if you win, just take the prize. It's a ton of protein anyhow, you hear?"
Once in 'range' for the start of the bout, the Finn's boot-clad foot stomps HARD on the curb, hard enough to crack the asphalt below while he he hunches his form foward slightly, arms spread out slightly like he's trying to evoke the image of a bear standing on it's hindlegs. It's... *probably* unintentional.
"Now show me how that fire burns, young lady."
And oh, does Juliet deliver. While Tarmo does stomp in the instant the bell rings, she ends up being fast enough to catch the giant by surprise. Her quick punches and jabs rain on the mountainous man with little flinches following, but...
He never *stopped*.
In spite of not so much as even trying to put up a guard to soak up the hits or rolling along with the blows to lessen their impacts, Tarmo doesn't even recoil. The initial stomp is just brought to it's conclusion, and--
"Watch your head!"
With the end of that motion, his huge paw of a hand comes thrusting out towards her head. Large enough to easily ennvelope the skulls of people larger than her, now reaching to grab for hers. If she doesn't manage to slip away from his grasp before he gets to secure a hold, she'll find the bare-chested man jumping up while still holding on to her face -- and using the force of gravity and his weight to slam her down underneath him when he comes down again!

[JULIET]
Juliet doesn't really respond to the offer of the sticky food. After a week eating treats and not training, she really *doesn't* want to eat that kind of stuff. But she's not going to get into a blazing row about it; she can deal with what she does with the prize after she's won the fight. The way things have gone with her lately, chances are high that it is an irrelevance anyway; but the important thing here, as ever, isn't that she wins the fight and walks away victorious. It is that she advances her understanding of fighting and demonstrates her talent for those who she inspires. She doesn't just represent herself on this stage, that's what she's starting to understand; she represents the hope of every teenage girl who wishes they had the guts to get in the ring and smack around some near-seven-foot-tall brawny dude, even if he's actually a good guy.
Grapples are, as ever, a weakness. She tries to twist out of his grip, but instead she winds up taking the blow full force, and the cracking impact of pavement underneath her slender shoulders is unpleasant. Still. Even in that, she had indeed learned something - and it was a lesson that she fully intended to make use of!
Both gloved fists come up to forcefully wrest Tarmo's hand off her face. As the big man had already learned, there's a surprising amount of force packed into that tiny body. And as she gets her feet underneath her again, the girl just ROCKETS upwards, not aiming to put those fists to use, but instead to CRACK the top of her head in underneath Tarmo's jaw with as much force as she can muster.
Now that the fight is on, she's starting to get her groove back - nothing gets her blood pumping like a proper opponent, and she was gratified that he didn't seem inclined to hold back!

[TARMO]
"Good start," Tarmo rumbles down at Juliet after the landing back to the ground. Slowly lifting himself up again after all but smashing her under his own weight, but hand still holding onto her head. "But you're gonna--"
The banter's cut short by the sudden display of force from the scot. Oh. Tarmo definitely underestimated her for a second there.
"--Ah."
While he does have the sense to recognize his mistake and try to pull himself further away while Juliet's scrambling up, he doesn't quite manage to bring his meaty arms up to put up proper guard for the attack from the unusual angle. The fact that she's able to launch her whole body up high enough to smash her skull against Tarmo's jaw with that kind of force is pretty impressive in of itself.
"Rrraaahh...?!" THe blow leaves even the giant stumbling back, dizzied briefly from the jolt and rubbing at his own jaw for a few seconds with one hand.
He's still conscious of his opponent, however. When Juliet makes her approach again, he does react this time. The potential damage to his jaw is forgotten for a moment, and instead he turns to facing her fully and--
His leg swings up suddenly, in a high kick. It's perhaps surprisingly limber of a move for someone of such physique, but it does reach a point where his boot is pointed directly up towards the sky afterwards. But that is not the worst of that particular move, no. Even if she may have sidestepped it or just had her guard broken...
That leg does come swinging back down again. Aimed for the very top of her form from high above, meant to assault her with both the impact of the impending blow and the forcing of her down against the pavement by the crushing force.

Tarmo 0/-------/--=====|=======\-------\1 Juliet
[JULIET]
Juliet is whirling around now. She seems to have realised that the only way she's going to win is to leverage her advantages - which, ironically, given the size of the man, does not involve taking advantage of any actual leverage. The first blow had impressed upon her, quite literally, that he is well-versed in the art of grappling, as distasteful as she finds it. If she's going to come out on top, it is going to be because she pushed her smaller size and greater agility to the hilt.
Both arms raise up high in a firm guard that crashes into the foot, and her knees lock as she stands firm against it. Juliet huffs, and as she forcefully pushes the stomping leg back and out of the way, the girl smacks her gloves together. "Yer every bit as strong as ye look." She says, and then there's that teasing smile again. She's having fun with this! It isn't quite the dizzying high that she'd felt when she strode out onto stage against Mint, but it feels amazing to be back where she belongs.
"Pity that I ain't, eh?"
The headbutt had been one thing, but what follows next beggars belief. So many people think that boxing doesn't use the legs. In fact, footwork is vital, and Juliet is constantly aware of where every part of her body is at any given moment. More than that, though, she doesn't skip leg day - and if the headbutt had been a surprise...
A slight bend of the knees, and then Juliet takes to the air as though those costume wings on her back are the real deal. She must jump at least eight feet in the air, briefly lifting herself up higher than even Tarmo's mountainous frame. Worse, though, she descends like a tiny comet, both fists swinging around as she aims to drive a powerful axe-handle blow into the top of the ferocious Finn's skull!
"HYAH!"

Tarmo 0/-------/-======|=======\====---\1 Juliet
[TARMO]
Tarmo might have expected Juliet to attempt to roll out of the way of the stomping foot, for that matter. So when she does brace her arms up to set his boot to holding up instead of slamming her down, he does look down upon her with a very distincg expression of surprise -- and respect too, for that matter. It takes guts to dare to do that!
The downside to such an attack that puts so much of his own weight upon it becomes clear when Juliet sweeps his leg aside, too. With a grunt of surprise, the Finn's left wobbling back and to the side briefly before he can get both his feet down to the street again and his balance regained.
And by the time he has, she has already leapt up ridicilously high. Eyes blinking in further surprise at the vision of her taking flight like that.
He refuses to just let her get fully away with that, however. With a grit of his teeth, Tarmo winds his other fist far back behind himself, and turns his full weight into another forward stomp--
"RRRRRRAAAAAHHH!!"
ANd this time, it comes with his fist getting swung up high over his own head and towards the descending Angel Boxer. In the very instant her glove-covered fist come down to colliding with the top of his head, his own boulder-sized fist slams into her midsection. Hard.
The crescent arc of the punch is powerful enough to knock the girl back and down to the curb -- not quick enough that he can fully avoid getting gonked on the head, but enough at least to knock her fists aside before the full force of the blow can smash into his skull.
"Hrrrhhh..." He rumbles after, wobbling back a few steps while his hand presses to the top of his head. "Hhhaaahhh... Got a lot of force packed there afterall, huh?"
[JULIET]
It's true that the Angelic Overhead does not have the best success rate in active fight situations to date. The move is one of the slower ones in Juliet's arsenal, and it is pretty easy to see coming. The crashing impact of Tarmo's fist as he scoops her out of the air is another painful reminder of that fact. She is still on her feet, though, and more than that... the girl is starting to glow.
This isn't metaphorical. Luminescence plays on her skin, a brilliant white energy starting to burn around her as she bounces on her heels. "There is strength in all of us, Tarmo Karmala." She intones, still smiling from ear to ear as she does. "The power in your muscles is impressive. But this fight is far from done. Let us see if we can't show each other the glory that sings within our hearts!"
The girl speaks with a certain authority to her as she makes this proclamation, and even the way she moves seems more... graceful, somehow. Her footsteps fluid and certain as she closes the gap between herself and her opponent. And as she does, she swings her right hook around, aiming to crack a plain and simple hook into his side--
Only, it's more clever than it looks! In the same movement, her guard is already snapping back neatly into place to recover the blow - fists raised and ready in front of her face in anticipation of what follows next!

"Hm?"
One of Tarmo's thick brows burrows downwards, while the other arcs upwards from the sight of the girl... actually glowing. "Does really seem like you have strength in mor ethan just your muscles, huh?"
Spreading his feet apart some with resounding stomps, Tarmo quickly assumes that bear-like stance again, in preparation for what's to come, mirroring the girl's smile right back at her.
"Come at me, then!"
Knowing the strength hidden inside of the girl's body, he does quickly bring his arms up in preparation to go into the defensive for a moment. He might not be as practiced with boxing specifically as her, but it is still a bit reminiscent of the guard boxers often make use of. Even if not coming with quite the same kind of bobbing and weaving motions.
The meaty pillars that are his limbs soak up the quick blows from her, one after the other, hissing out air every now and then when her glove-covered knuckles rebound off of him.
"Good, good--" He rumbles, turning his body slightly after one particular blow as he withdraws his right arm from the guard to wind it low.
"But my turn now!"
And with another powerful stomp forward, and a wild swing of his arm, he aims a vicious uppercut from the tree-trunk -sized arm at Juliet's midsection, with enough force to threaten sending her flying into the air!

[JULIET]
The diminutive boxer moves with fluidity in her response. The blows are still too powerful for her to mitigate entirely, as had started to become a bit of a trademark move when she was in this state. She can feel the shape of the fight, is the best way she can think of it. But more impressively for her right now, she CAN think of it. The girl is fully aware of herself as she moves with the attacks, her recovered guard taking the wild swing full on as it forces her to skid back across the ground.
"In Hokkaido, the native people consider the bear the head of the Gods, did you know that?" She muses, "One who wrestles with Gods, perhaps it is no wonder that you have sharpened your skills so mightily!"
The girl seems almost to glide across the ground as she returns to close quarters. That's the true heart of her style. She knows she is vulnerable in the big man's clutches; and yet not once has she backed down. Her style demands that she faces her fear head-on and take it with all the honest and forthright courage she can muster. And she is proud to do so. With the eyes of the world, and her trainer, watching... she will not let them down!
The aura of power surrounding the girl is shining like the sun as she draws her fist back, "Now let me show you what my power can truly accomplish!"
And just like that she is flying into the air, her fist leaving an incandescant trail of glorious white power. More than that, though. If she makes the powerful connection with the big man's jaw clean, he will find himself being carried off his feet as though he weighed no more than a feather! Brought into the air along with his young opponent, with all that power gathering and burning around them both.
And there, at the apex of her leap, it EXPLODES in a dazzling burst of power - the air filled with the sound of a heavenly chorus, and both fighters born back down to earth amidst a cloud of fluttering white feathers which gently evaporate into sparks.

[TARMO]
"Hhh-!"
The wild swing of the uppercut getting redirected away comes with the very unfortunate (for Tarmo!) side-effect of the bear-wrestler's figure jostling off to the side.
"I don't know about gods--" He does manage to rumble even while his balance is so precariously disturbed, smiling with good cheer in spite of the unfortunate turn of the attack he may well have intended to end this particular fight with.
Still, he's confident he can soak up whatever the girl can throw at him, as he turns towards the glowing image of the boxe-
Wait.
When did she get so cl-
The bright aura is outright blinding, and even if Tarmo's reflexes are quick enough to react to the speed at which she closed in, he can't actually *see* her form propely on account of it. His hand desperately reaches in to try and grab at her, but as her fist flies up, right past the intended tangle of his own limb--
That divine judgement was already sealed.
After everything, that enormous power is unexpected. A powerful sound echoes through the whole street with the impact of fist to jaw with such power that even the overwhelming size and weight of Tarmo is sent flying up. "Ghhh--?!"
Just with that, he does at least have his senses remaining still, and while the both of them are flying through the air, both his hands reach to grab at Juliet again--
Only for the explosion of light to halt him.
As a result, the Finn's landing is... much less graceful than that of Juliet's. His body is already steaming even before he lands on the curb, back-first -- likely cracking the cement in a crater around him when he does hit the ground like that.
"Uuuuugggggghhhh..."
For a few seconds, he just lays there, with his mouth left agape and eyes rolled up, before he manages to gather enough focus to at least roll himself over onto his stomach, from whence he pushes himself up to one knee, weakly.
"D-did... anyone get the plate... o-on that tank...?"
[JULIET]
Juliet lands, and the girl's glow is starting to fade... but those who have been watching Juliet's fights closely might note that this time, the glow is dying out slowly. Previously, she'd fallen HARD out of the transcendent state, but this time the silver-haired boxer is coming down out of that glorious moment at a far more sedate and controlled pace.
"My name." She says, with an easy smile, as she turns back to face Tarmo full on. "Is The Boxing Angel."
And with the man brought down to his knee, made to look her neatly in the eye, the girl steps forwards with that same grace in her step, moving quickly in a zig-zag approach to keep him disoriented even now, before she brings her fist around - a quick hook aiming to crash into Tarmo's jaw and, hopefully, net her that knock-out blow which has thus far eluded her in the League.
Though whether it hits or not, as the last embers of her power die away from her and she returns to normal, the girl is still smiling from ear to ear. She'd done it! She'd not just used that power, not just rudely forced it into being... but she'd ridden it, clean and controlled, until it was time for it to slip away again! She simply could not be happier!

"Ghhh... So... it is..." Rumbles Tarmo while he's working to push himself further up, but... damned if his body doesn't feel *heavy* right now.
"Guess angels... hhh... are a different deal... from gods then..."
Slowly he rises upwards, though even once he's up on his feet, he can't quite manage to bring himself fully upright. Something that Juliet would no doubt use to her advantage, too, in addition to the quick, confusing movements she appraoches him with. His vision's still blurry, so it's evne more difficult to track her properly--
And then it comes. The punch to the side of his head now may have only the fraction of the power she brought into the punch that sent him flying, but in his current state, it's enough to jostle his already-abused head and turn his vision briefly to static.
"Ghhh--"
No banter of any kind this time around, just that pained gurgle while Tarmo's eyes roll up, and the balance of his form starts swinging back--
But as he does, he makes the effort of one final defiant offense against this worthy opponent. Massive paws reaching out for Juliet even as he's actively tipping back -- and if he does manage to grab onto her sides, use that very same falling motion to hoist her up into the air, over himself, and drive her head into the curb in that same moment his weight slams onto the cement.

"Y-yeah, you could say that..."
Juliet is clearly surprised. Incredibly pleased with herself, but surprised. When she'd been forced to step back and relax, she'd assumed that it would be at least a fight or two before she managed to get close to the incredible power she'd been slowly learning to channel. That was something that Gabriella really couldn't help her with; the trainer knows her punches, but she knows nothing about strange energies and the state that Juliet had tried to describe to her a few times.
Tarmo makes his final grab, and the girl hurriedly backs off. She's learned more than enough respect for the power in those massive hands, and when he collapses back into the ground and doesn't rise, she stares at him for several long moments. She'd... actually done it? All her tenacity and determination had paid off, and she'd taken out another fighter - not a girl her own age, even, but a mountain of a man who any sane girl her age would have run screaming from?!
"We have our winner, Juliet!"
The referee gives his verdict, sounding just as stunned as Juliet looks, and immediately the girl leaps into the air. "YES!" She shouts, and then, perhaps surprisingly... she's grabbing Tarmo, and trying to haul the larger man up to his feet, "Hey, hey! Tarmo! Ye're good, aren't you? I didn't hit ye too hard?" She asks, patting at his face with her gloves as the medics come over to check him over properly.
Gabriella puts her hand on the young girl's shoulder, and it is easy to see the pride radiating out of the older woman's face. "Juliet, you've got to give the poor man a minute to recover, at least." She says, as she presses the box of takeout into her gloved hands, "Anyway. You've got a victory snack to enjoy. C'mon now. I'm sure Mr. Karmala will be happy to catch up with you when he's had a good rest."
