Circuit of Champions - SNF: ROOKIE RED BELT - Lightning Spangles vs Quon

[Toggle Names]

Description: Lightning Spangles (the one people like) has held the Rookie Red Belt far longer than the other Lightning Spangles, acting as a bulwark against all up and comers from making it big. With the Rookie Riot wreaking havoc in the underbelts, she faces a challenger from out of the blue. The Chongquan student Quon Chen brings his dynamic flair right to the footsteps of the Spangles Fast Food Restaurant. Can the littlest Spangles defend her title in front of her all her adoring fans?

[QUON]
Things had kind of sort of returned to normal for the Southtown University student, Quon returned to school but then he felt the itch to get back into the fighting scene. He signed up but the matchmakers seemed to think that his record showed enough promise to fight for a belt but not enough to skip over for the worldwide belt. That was something that he was not expecting. He actually thought he would need a few more fights to establish himself.

Fast forward to the moment he enters the restaurant with an area in the center of the restaurant completely cleared out for their fight with camera crew surrounding the open space as well as restaurant patrons seated at tables. As he looks around and for a moment he locks eyes with the Jezebel Lightning Spangles statue and shudders with disgust. She would serve as a cautionary tale for him for the day he take to the screen be silver screen, television screen, or computer monitor.

The announcer speaks, mercifully breaking his attention from the Jezebel Spangles statue to announce him.

"The challenger, hailing from Hong Kong, standing at 5 foot 7", weighing in at 158 pounds, Quon Chen!"

[PEPPER]
It had been awhile since the newer Lightning Spangles had been seen beyond the occasional, brief promotional event. With the classic Jezebel Spangles somehow coming back into the fold, and the awkwardness of dealing with the young star given everything that had happened to her, people had been content not to have to deal with the issue.

The most recent problem stemmed from the fact that technically the name on the Rookie Red Belt was Lightning Spangles, not Pepper Green. It would look bad for the brand if Lightning Spangles couldn't at least show up to defend her hard work, and while Jezebel Faiblesse had suggested that she should stand in for the fight, since she is Lightning Spangles, the higher-ups were fairly adamant about the fact that nobody would confuse Jezebel with a 14-year-old girl.

This statement required a great deal of damage control, but it resulted in the younger Spangles putting the hat back on.

And if you're going to have a Spangles event, it's going to be big.

"And the current holder of the Rookie Red Belt... LIIIIIIIGHTNING SPAAAAAAAAAAANGLES!"

The announcement was met with the blaring musical theme of the Lightning Spangles Show Up Hoedown Show (2016) as a dozen people in appropriately themed animal costumes pour in through the door (including fan favorite, Hoedown Dilloo himself!) before Lightning Spangles runs into the restraunt, waving to the crowd with a brilliantly white smile on her face.

[QUON]
When the theme for Lightning Spangles comes on, Quon twitches slightly before reining in his urge to cringe. His dislike for classic Spangles was exactly that. His dislike for classic Spangles. There was no reason to take his dislike for Jezebel Faiblesse out on Pepper Green. That and there was no need for him to be a heel in this situation either.

As he approaches his opponent, he extends his hand and softly says to the younger opponent, "May the best fighter win."

Whether or not the offer for the handshake is taken, he moves to his side of the open space and waits for the official to start the fight.

When the signal to begin is given, Quon immediately takes his stance and steps forward, approaching Lightning Spangles before attempting to test her defenses by throwing an oblique kick to her calf muscle and then quickly following up with an aquatic chi double palm strike to the stomach.

COMBATSYS: Pepper dodges Quon's Immovable Mountain.

The most important part of Lightning Spangles is maintaining a wholesome and upbeat attitude no matter what. Being able to be a good role model is vital if you want to be a beacon of children's entertainment!

...Which is what the suits really want, even if Jezebel can still somehow bring in a demographic of crazy super villains willing to spend an unreasonable amount of resources on her behalf.

Spangles takes Quon's hand with both of her's, beaming a brilliant smile up at him. "Yeah, let's put on a real good Hoedown for everyone at home to see!" she says in a saccarine tone of voice that could rot teeth before shifting back into a bouncy fighting stance.

And despite all the show, it's instantly apparent that there really is some fighting experience there, even if it's covered in layers of flash and showmanship as she ducks to the side as the opening kick is thrown out, getting out of the way to reposition to a flanking position.

"Hooeee! You're pretty quick, looks like I'm gonna have to be light on my feet if I want to keep my title," she calls out, launching herself up into the air in a spinning whirlwind kick aimed high on Quon, but if she gets a clean hit, the leg switches around, catching Quon around the neck as she suddenly twists it around into a downward pulling throw, aiming to plow his face into the floor with a follow-up heel strike.

COMBATSYS: Quon blocks Pepper's Keep On Moving.

[QUON]
Quon's foot meet nothing but air as does the water engulfed hands. Water splashes from his hands and hits the tiled floor as he's forced to slide his kicking leg on the ground to keep up with the speed of the younger fighter moving towards his flank.

Pepper doesn't give him enough time to contemplate anything beyond defending himself. The kick meets his forearm as he sways with it to take some power off of the initial kick. The next kick comes in for the back of the neck and he steps forward so he can move inside of the kick and stuffing it at her thigh with his shoulder before spinning around to her flank in a fluid dance. It would appear that Lightning Spangles' opponent was no stranger to putting on a performance.

When in position, he throws out a rapid fire series of kicks traveling so quickly that they look to be in about three locations at once. It looks oddly reminiscent of Chun Li's Hyakuretsu Kyaku or Robert Garcia's Gen'ei Kyaku.

COMBATSYS: Quon successfully hits Pepper with Seven Dragon Tails.

The problem with taking to the air is that it's a good way to get put in a poor position on the other side, and even if she does manage to put a dent in his defenses, it's not enough to leave her safe on the other end when her boots catch the ground. Especially not when you consider that the floors in a place like this are designed to be kept shiny and clean, which means that they have a tendency to be slippery, even before water chi is put into play.

While attempting to adjust to her surroundings, Spangles doesn't have near as much freedom to maneuver as she thought and ends up catching the first kick clean, knocking her out of it enough that there's no way to avoid the follow-ups and she's sent reeling back, falling to one knee on the floor.

"Looks like we've got ourselves a proper Showup Hoedown!" Spangles shouts as she looks back up, readjusting her hat as she kicks back into the action. This time, crossing the open space, she doesn't seem interested in trying anything fancy, clearing the open space between her and Quon and lashing out with an open palm strike designed to knock him back. At the last moment, however, Pepper's hand is suddenly exuding familiar, aquatic chi in an aura around it.

[QUON]
As Pepper drops to one knee, Quon himself is repositioning himself in preparation for dealing with Lightning Spangles' retaliation. He watches and waits for the perfect opportunity to show off for the cameras and potentially get discovered.

When she gets back into action Quon meets her half-way. While it doesn't look like the younger Spangles has any interest in doing anything flashy, the Chongquan practitioner does. He flips forward in the air as his black sneaker clad foot becomes sheathed in more of that aquatic chi. It's not until he descends that he sees Spangles attempting to hoist him by his own aqua(rather than his petard). The two collide with bodies and water flying everywhere. With Quon's leg having a bit more reach, he avoids getting the worst of it.

"I haven't met many people who use water. Impressive."

He rises to his feet with a somewhat wet shirt and vest.

[PEPPER]
That doesn't go anywhere near as planned for Pepper as her bit of experimentation ends with her getting all washed up and taking a nasty kick that sends her sliding back along the wet floor, and instantly making a lot of the bosses responsible for the Lightning Spangles brand start to worry about whether or not this has the danger of turning more wet t-shirt contest than wholesome family brawl.

Spoiler: it's fine, the costume department is quite good at their jobs, but the fact that it's fine for her to be involved in violent battles is somewhat curious.

"It didn't work out quite like I'd hoped, but there's one important thing for every Lightning Spangles Showup Hoedown Deputy to remember and that's: Don't give up just because you don't succeed!" Her shout fills the restraunt, and some white hat wearing children let out cheers of support as Lightning Spangles herself gets back up to her feet.

"No, I do think that maybe we need to cool off a bit!" she retorts with a quick wink before suddenly launching a gust of frozen chi outward, leaving faint ice crystals along her own clothes just from proximity, but it's really intended to catch Quon and give him a nice ice layer.

COMBATSYS: Pepper successfully hits Quon with Reaching Out.

[QUON]
After seeing Spangles toss out water, Quon is in no way prepared for her to send ice his way. He feels the moisture under his feet just as he tenses up in preparation to hop out of the way and he realizes that he'll slip and hit the ground. Instead, he resigns himself to his fate and takes the gust of icy chi to the chest, the impact sliding him back slightly along with the struggle to breathe from the unexpectedly cold air.

He picks his steps carefully. It would look horrible for him to slip in this moist mess especially in the face of the show that these two were putting on for the crowd. Quon discards the fancy stuff for the time being as he steps into punching range and delivers a jab and then a straight to the body. If there was anyone who understood the need to keep the face pristine for the adoring public, it was Quon.

COMBATSYS: Pepper counters Medium Punch from Quon with Lightning Lariat.

[PEPPER]
While it might be Lightning Spangles' personality and face in the ring, it's still Pepper Green behind the white hat. She was Lightning Spangles because she was supposed to be Lightning Spangles. She didn't have anything else to worry about, but for Pepper Green, there was still that moment in a fight, with the whole world working so fast that she doesn't have to think, that she can really just let loose and be creative.

A simple punch is an easy enough task. There's no flourish, no surprises, and even as it's building up, there's already a strange loop forming in Spangles' hand forming, the star herself ducking to the side and whipping the loop up to let Quon send his fist flying straight through it as she continues to twist around to the side, drawing it out like a proper lasso as she slips around behind him, the lingering effect stinging as she yanks her opponent back toward her from the other side.

"Don't let yerself get too tied up, this Showup Howdown is just gettin' exciting!"

[QUON]
This new Spangles was full of surprises! Water chi, ice chi and now Quon found his hand caught in a lariat of energy and yanked hard in her direction. He was neither ready for this nor in any position to properly recover from it and so he finds himself yanked down to his knees.

He's in close and there may be opportunity if he's quick enough to take advantage of it. Chongquan wasn't exactly known for its groundwork but perhaps the element of surprise might just be enough. Already on his knees and in close proximity, he steps forward without going fully upright and if he is able to wrap his arms about Pepper Green's legs, he'll drive his shoulder into her thigh as he elevates and proceed to dump her on her back as he performs an improvised double leg takedown.

He's too out of breath to give a clever response to Lightning Spangles' remark.

COMBATSYS: Pepper endures Quon's Fast Throw.

[PEPPER]
While the other Lightning Spangles might have a more well-defined combat style in the grand scheme of things, the younger Spangles is granted the gift of being played by Pepper Green, and got the position by masterfully imitating the original Lightning Spangles as a child. What started as nothing more than an ability to copy what she'd seen evolved over time into the ability to repurpose it all as she needed it.

But she can still read people.

The in-coming attack is flustered, off-balance, and there's no reason to try to struggle out of the way. Instead Pepper lets Quon take her off her feet, letting him get in even closer.

With both low to the ground, the first step of the process involves catching an arm over Quon's neck as she scrambles up to her feet, temporarily locking him in place as she throws a knee at his gut, then lets go to aim a kick for his leg, all aiming for weak points to start slowing down her opponent even more before he can recover from being worn down. It's all brought to a close as she launches forward for a clothesline maneuver to try to get Quon off his feet.

COMBATSYS: Quon blocks Pepper's Heart Of A Champion.

[QUON]
While Quon doesn't have the ability to copy what he sees, Quon is still a prodigy in his own right. His talent is more in the realm of instinct. He feels when he needs to move and if the move isn't too deceptive or too fast or too powerful for him to defend against, he will more often than not find himself in the right place to at least somewhat mitigate the circumstance just because the movement felt right.Given time and opportunity, this instinct will be refined.

The moment he feels that arm on his neck, he shoots a hand to her thigh and hips to once again stuff the kick before assisting her retreat by shoving her away. That's when the kick comes in. He attempts to check the kick. This is where he makes the right decision on instinct but the lack of refinement bites him. She manages to catch him right on the teardrop muscle on his thigh which gives him a bit of a deadleg. The finishing clothesline catches him on the forearm as he drops backwards into a suicide kip-up for the style points before he lands on his feet again.

Because of the deadleg, he doesn't get as much hangtime as he usually does but Pepper isn't as tall as his usual opponent and so he doesn't need it. He leaps into the air as he shoots forward and delivers alternating head stomps before flipping off while using his feet to shove her away. The landing isn't as clean as he's used to.

COMBATSYS: Pepper blocks Quon's Breaking the Shell.

It's not quite as much as Pepper had been hoping for, but it seems to be enough for her to get the time needed to get back into position in order to deal with Quon's retaliation. Both of her arms come up to protect her hat (and her head) from the flurry of kicking stomps while Quon goes recoiling back away from her.

There's a moment where there's a bit more sparkle in her eyes, perhaps a touch less phoniness in her smile as she enjoys the moment. She's standing there, looking for a new opportunity to get a line in on her opponent...

And then a young fan pops up from the sidelines, dressed in her own Officially Liscenced Lightning Spangles Showup Hoedown Dress-Up Kit, complete with Buckaroo Bronco hobby horse, which is currently being extended out toward the young star. "Thpangleth! Thpangleth! Bubuckaroo will help you win!" the child excitedly lips.

There's half a hitch, but Lightning Spangles is always Lightning Spangles. "Well, thanks you Deputy! Buckaroo Bronco is one of my favorite pardners at the Showup Hoedown, and you are, too," she replies, leaning down to give the fan a hug and take the horse in one hand, turning back to the fight. "Let's ride, Buckaroo!" she yells as she suddenly goes flying in at Quon again, boots catching the particularly slippery part of the floor that hadn't had a chance to ice over, and then lashes out with a very horsey sweep with the improvised pardner.

COMBATSYS: Pepper successfully hits Quon with Light Random Weapon.

Quon was doing so well avoiding wet and icy patches to the point he was avoiding falling and embarrassing himself. When the Buckaroo Bronco comes into play, that all goes out the window. He slips and falls before he can manage any type of evasion let alone an acrobatic one. The horse glances off of his foot finishing the job that the wet floor already started and he hits the ground.

He climbs back to his feet, takes a deep breath and moves into punching range right before he throws an uppercut to the rib cage in an attempt to launch the second generation Spangles into the air. If Quon should connect, he'll follow up with something that should be familiar. He flips forward once again, bringing down a heel in a tidal wave of aquatic chi to slam her back down face first before flipping into the air to drive both water chi and his feet into her back before performing a final flip, this time with a 180 degree twist to position himself facing Lightning Spangles.

[PEPPER]
That all went a bit weird, but it's enough to get a cheer out of the crowd, which is enough for Lightning Spangles. Tossing the hobby horse toward one of the costumed characters by the sideline (which happens to be Jamboree Jack Rabbit) to return it to the Deputy who had offered it up in the first place while she turns her attention back to the fight.

It's a good thing, too, considering that Quon's quicker up to his feet than Pepper had been expecting, and whatever it is he's doing, she can tell it's getting ready to hurt a whole heckuva lot.

Putting everything she has into reacting quickly, amongst a surge of cheers for Lightning Spangles, Pepper throws up her arms and creates a quick tin star out of chi to act as a barrier between herself and Quon's assault, unable to force any of it back, but at least temporarily able to avoid getting plastered to the shiny floor.

[QUON]
Quon's initial uppercut glances off of the improvised chi shield as does the tidal wave of chi when he flips forward driving the heel down. When the cascade of aquatic chi falls harmlessly on the ground, he gives up on the rest of the assault.

The Chongquan practitioner breathes heavily as he tries to figure out how two of his strongest moves had failed to land true. He's barely hanging on and at this point he's desperate to get some type of offense going or else it's curtains for him and possibly for any prospect for getting some type of show biz start.

He moves in as he tries to fight the fatigue in his muscles and then goes for a couple punches to the stomach before attempting to trip Lightning Spangles down to the ground.

Always stay on your toes. You can't let yourself get overwhelmed in the moment, and you can't let up.

If you can survive the assault of the opposition, then your best bet in any given moment is to try to press any advantage you can find and hit them back hard. At least, that's what Pepper's found, and with an opponent working themselves ragged, it tends to prove even more vital.

With Quon lunging in for the punch, Lightning Spangles drops low, clenching her fist tight as she waits for the perfect moment and launching upward into a rapid, spiral uppercut, her entire forearm suddenly sheathed in small bursts of chi, exploding outward as if from a sparkler.

It's not as clean to the jaw as she'd hoped, and Quon still gets one of his hits off to her stomach, sending her reeling back before she hits the ground.

[QUON]
With only one of his punches connecting to the stomach, he gets sent stumbling backwards but he doesn't fall down. He still looks like he's just barely standing though. Throwing himself at Spangles doesn't seem to get him anything besides expending energy that he doesn't really have and in this particular case a fireworks sparkler of an uppercut to the face.

What he's doing right now isn't working so he decides he needs to change approach. Right now, in Quon's mind that change in approach is not to approach at all. He takes a moment to get his breath back and focus his mind and let her come to him.

COMBATSYS: Quon gains composure.

Even feeling somewhat worn out, Lightning Spangles isn't one to just stand around. Sometimes you just have to keep going and do your best to fight on so that everyone can see just how to never give up when life is hard.

Perhaps some Lightning Spangles should have taken that advice in different ways, but this one at least has a public face of being upbeat and happy for her younger audience, even if at the moment she can't concentrate on working the crowd quite the same way while staying in the fight.

Lunging forward, Lightning Spangles initially seeming prepared to lash out directly, weight forward for a strike from the left, but at the last moment all of that weight shifts again, suddenly being thrust into a knee strike from the other side.

COMBATSYS: Quon instinctively blocks Pepper's Light Kick.

[QUON]
The best thing that Quon does in this particular situation is that he doesn't think, he feels. This particularly works out because overthinking might've made him bite the feint from the left, opening him up to the knee from the right. He doesn't and instead moves forward and slightly to the side, smothering the knee before it can get a full thrust into his body.

He's once again in close quarters with the younger fighter and Quon intends to take advantage of this by borrowing a move from a sitcom. He grabs Lightning Spangles by the waist of her jeans and by her shoulder as he attempts to have her play the role of Jazz from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and hurl her away from him to an open space on the floor like he was Uncle Phil.

Getting grabbed like this is really not working out for Lightning Spangles, but she's not completely unprepared for the eventuality, and sometimes you've just got to readjust. Rather than struggle out of the hold, she puts some of the acrobatic showmanship on display as she's thrown, shifting her weight in mid-air so that she ends up landing on the floor in a crouch, cushioning the fall.

"Alright, that wasn't too bad, but ya'll can't just expect Lightning Spangles to give up in the fight!" shouts Lightning Spangles as she gets back up, adjusting her hat. "Seems to me like now's the time to show you the tin star of justice!"

Pulling both hands back to concentrate, she starts to pull together her chi again, once more creating gleaming, sparkling balls or light and then launching them out all at once. Rather than one, singular big blast, it's been separated out into a more shotgun spray effect as each of the orbs twinkles out into an iconic starship of the sheriff's badge.

"Expecting you to give up would've been an insult to you and me."

And then Quon gets no more time to say anything else as he gets shown the tin star of justice as he gets hit in the chest with a chi based shotgun blast leaving a cluster of holes in his shirt that is star-shaped as the Chongquan practitioner is taken clean off of his feet.

He knows that unconsciousness is soon going to overtake him and at least for now, the belt is out of his grasp. At the very least he can make sure he can leave everything in the ring(as makeshift as it may be in this restaurant).

He works himself back to his feet and practically drags himself into kicking range before he wills himself into delivering a rapid fire series of kicks. If he were in better condition, they would be much faster. The untrained eye sees his foot in merely two places at once rather than the usual five. He switches legs and kicks faster. The untrained eye would see it in four places at once instead the usual seven. And then there's the haymaker. The momentum carries the fighter face down to the ground where he doesn't get up.

Pepper Green is exhausted. Even Lightning Spangles is beginning to show some serious signs of sweating with a number of bruises. Whoever is responsible for fighter make-up probably deserves way more business, because the corporate overlords have found a way to keep Spangles' still looking mostly on-brand even with the fight.

But Lightning Spangles isn't allowed to give up.

The assault comes from all sides, and it's all Pepper can do to catch most of them on her limbs instead of simply being blown away by the overwhelming attack. They just aren't responding as quickly as she'd like, and it's only the fact that she has to be Lightning Spangles right now that gives her any drive to keep standing on her feet at all.

"Y... you'd make a pretty good deputy," Spangles manages to pant, still standing shakey until her legs fall out from under her. The young star hits the exceptionally shiny restraunt floor mere moments after her opponent.

COMBATSYS: Pepper takes no action.

Then the officials need to be brought in. Both fighters getting attended to by the ring-side physicians. It's nearly fiften minutes later when an official takes the a microphone.

"Ladies and gentleman, the winner of the bout and the Rookie Red Belt..."

"...LIGHTNING SPANGLES!"

The young starlet is brought out, looking at least revived enough to stand on her own two feet as she's presented with the belt, holding it up for the crowd to see, and then turning to Quon, beaming a white smile on her youthful face as she says, "Ya'll put up a real nice fight," before putting out a hand.

[QUON]
As Quon himself gets attended to, he's out for a large portion of those almost fifteen minutes. It's not until just before the announcement is made that he's truly aware of his surroundings which make it somewhat emotional for him. To hear he didn't win.

As Pepper Green is brought back out to accept her belt, Quon takes a few moments to get his feet back under him and that's when he sees the young actress turn to offer her hand he stumbles towards her, not quite as recovered as she was to shake the offered hand.

"I look forward to the next time we face each other, champ."

Two prodigies. One on the screen already and the other looking for their shot on film. Who knows where their paths will lead?
