SNF 2012.07 - SNF: Speed Demons

Description: Brett Neuer and Setsuna Sonozaki--two fighters from very different backgrounds. As the cars race around the track, the two race to win their fight--in Brett's case, almost literally. (Winner: Brett)

Speed. It's an important part of any fighter's domain, whether they prefer the patient, drawn out approach or breakneck, lightning fast pace to overwhelm their opponent. Usually, though...it's not measured in miles per hour. Not in the hundreds at least. It's not a race after all...

*VROOOM!* *VROOMROOMROOM!!* Someone neglected to mention that to Saturday Night Fights, however. While it's not the Daytona 500, there IS a race going on today. Thankfully one not involving a certain Brett Neuer, mind, but there is a race. Waiting in a cordoned off pitstop area not in use by any of the race teams here today, the hockey fighter finds himself...well, a little bit nervous. Not for the fight, mind, no.

....well, you try and fight not 15 yards from dozens of cars driving at excess of 200 mph! Just whose idea was it to fight DURING a race?....oh, right. Saturday Night Fight's. In any case, speed IS important to Brett's style, but right now speed wasn't his worry...it was trying to get his gear on properly without feeling a jump shoot up his spine every lap. "Geez..." His heart was racing and it wasn't even fight time yet. This is going to be...a strange fight. Strange fight indeed....he didn't even get a chance to read up on his opponent either, now that he thinks about it.

There's not much to read up on regarding one Setsuna Sonozaki. Gedo student, transplanted from Metro City, and, well, pretty. But eye-patched, with the radial scar obvious even then... yet it hasn't seemed to affect her much at all. She's been around for a bit, but hasn't been making splashes, other than the occasional SNF.

She looks, well, dubious. Not because of the fight, or her opponent, but for the place selected for it. "A pit-stop? Really?" She has to raise her voice to be heard, and though her voice is a lovely alto, there's definitely a no-nonsense tone to it, her mouth set in a rather dubious line. Well, as long as there's enough room....

Idly, she wonders if getting thrown onto the track will be a real danger--or opportunity. Not something she'd do deliberately, of course, but there are always happenstances and all. She hadn't read up on her opponent either. At least she's dressed for the occasion--a leather racing jacket in white, with black collar, sleeves, and hem, and patches for various companies on it, a dark grey, heavy cotton tee underneath, and black jeans and boots--the black jeans seem to be the one constant for her.

As she arrives at the pitstop area, she gives Brett a nod, reaching up to tighten her fingerless gloves and then brush her hair back over her shoulders.

Normally Brett might be able to appreciate the fact that his opponent is somewhat of a cute girl...but considering the situation and setting, there are a few more important things to worry about. And considering how often the cars are passing by, it's a chore just trying to get through his pre-fight prep first thing.

Finally getting his wits long enough to cinch his helmet down and get his gloves fixed on his hands, the former Winger finally lifts his head up, glancing up at the girl with the eyepatch and the racing jacket. He glances down at himself...the racing jumpsuit they forced him to wear too was....yeah. "They made you wear something like this too, huh?" he asks, frowning at just how...lame it looks, especially with his own gear atop it.

He turns back...and grits his teeth, forcing himself not to shut his eyes in reaction as another wave of cars passes by close to their pit area. "....good luck," he maneges to get out with an aggrieved sound before grabbing his stick. Swinging it down until the heel cracked on the asphalt beneath them, he sunk down into his usual face off stance, trying REAL hard to drop into his usual gameface.

A shrug. "I own a lot of jackets like this one, they're pretty comfortable," she replies, her voice still raised to counter the sounds of 50 or so cars buzzing by at 200mph-type speeds. There's amusement evident at his reaction to the cars buzzing by--she'd sometimes jog down the freeway, a rather extreme sort of training, so cars aren't a big thing to her.

As Brett goes through his own little pre-fight ritual, or tries, Setsuna does, too--a couple of stretches, clenching and unclenching her hands into fists, firing off a quick combination. "Thanks," she replies, dryly, settling into her own game face, presenting her left side forward, her stance very much like a boxer's, with a wide foot-stance and hands up, and she sidles forward, a couple of steps... and waits.

Hockey. She's familiar with it, though not really a fan, and she is already formulating some suspicions on how it'll translate to a fighting style.

A deep breath comes from the hockey fighter, the garish racing jumper forgotten. The unease about the cars speeding by him at speeds 3-4 times that of legal street limit?....well, despite his change in demeanor, there's still a small twitch to his face every time another car passes by, which probably tells you how much it still effects him. But now's not the time to get freaked out by the shockwave of the pack shooting by. Now's the time to fight...

Brett waits, head tilted up as his body is sunk down low, waiting for the signal to fight. With the noise of everything, and fitting the general theme anyway, a green flag is brought down rather than any other sort of sound or signal.

And thankfully, Brett's peripheral vision is enough to see it, breaking into a quick dash soon as it drops. Sure, he's not exactly a race car, but he can pick up some speed when he wants to, too. Sprinting straight toward Sonozaki on his skates, he tries to take the first shot, hoping to race by with a sharp strike from the blade of his stick, the barest of swings given as he tries to simply use his momentum to put the force behind it.

He moves pretty much how she would expect--and she turns as he goes. The strike does hit true, but with the shift, she manages to utilize that impact to keep her moving in the same direction that the hockey-fighter is. It's a pretty good strike, too, for all that, as she would expect from a man with a stick. She'll have to respond in kind, won't she? Her lips quirk, slightly, as she considers her options--and in the span of a moment, decides.

That shot might've knocked her off her feet, but for her movement--instead she's taking roughly the same parallel course as Brett, her right hand drawn back for a classic right cross to the jaw, that leather-gloved fist snapping outwards just as she plants her feet, turning all that momentum from her body into momentum leashed to the speed of her fist.

The passing strike might have knocked Sonozaki off her feet, but Brett wasn't going to get complacent or let up at all. Even with the rumbling of the track around them, he manages to keep his own speed up, turning about and making another run at Sonozaki. The rough-edged girl is waiting of course, , the right cross aimed at his jaw. It's a quick raise of his stick and his gloved hand to catch the cross that keeps him from eating it completely, and even then, his own momentum meant that the force was a bit more than it would've been standing still. "Nnnghhh..."

Directed off course after that strike, the former third-liner tries to keep up his pace though, another swing around as he tries to build up more speed, looking oddly like the very cars he'd been jumping at earlier. He seems prepared to make another pass just like before, stick upraised...but rather than going straight for Sonozaki, he rolls off to her side, coasting and leveling his stick up before slapshotting it across the asphalt. As the stick snaps off the ground, a wave of cool blue energy arcs upward, gliding across the ground toward Sonozaki.

She almost goes for it, when he comes around. Almost lunges for him. She only checks herself at the last moment, just as he peels off, and she whirls around, continuing to face him as he unleashes that wave of blue energy--and she covers up, the impact of the power blunted by her aura and her defensive posture. With just a little bit of a grin, she nods, a little... and then lunges forward all the same.

It's definitely a different kind of fight, since her opponent doesn't really stay still. She has to track and adjust. Her lunge takes her forward, reaching out for Brett--plenty to grab onto, what with the various pieces of gear he's wearing--and if she does, well... she'll -force- him to stop, by planting her feet, and as a surge of grey-white wind chi bursts up from underneath him, she'll sling him straight upwards, leaving the chi to both spin him around and to suffuse him with a cold, cutting energy.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki successfully hits Brett with Tornado Hold.

While Brett didn't have to come to a stop to fire off his Shark Crest, he DID have to coast for it, meaning even if he was moving, he was slowing down...and that just makes it easier for Sonozaki to track him when she actually makes a mind to. THe result is when she lunges, she's able to intercept him and grab on, stalling him long enough for that blast of wind chi to erupt beneath him.

Flung upward by the sudden gust and cut by the energy infused within that gust, the winger's landing is...not a good one. Not only crashing into the concrete, but also showing more than a few lines of red through the jumpsuit as he rises. "Nghhhhhhthh..." He's not terribly vocal once he gets into a fight mindset, but he sure can be noisy when he's pained or straining, both present as he pushes himself back up to his skates with the butt end of his stick.

He doesn't get up all the way though, remaining partially crouched as he tries to push himself forward on his wheels. Not a fast pace, not with so little room to pick up speed. But enough momentum to start spinning on those wheels, stick outstretched as it first tries to sweep along ankle level with circular slashes, but then swing upward as he rises, trying to batter the wind-user several times as his stick spirals upwards.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki endures Brett's Wild Spiral.

Setsuna is not known for backing down. In fact, her fighting style is remarkably similar to Special Forces training, amongst others--definite hints of Muay Thai and Krav Maga as well--and that kind of training engenders a certain sort of mentality. The impacts are quite strong, to be sure--slamming into her again and again--but she stands her ground, flexing with the impacts only minimally, weathering the storm...

Until the last strike, which she takes, but doesn't flinch from... and she remains close to Brett, again. Then she lunges again, her hands flattening into knifehands, and flaring with that wind chi again. She strikes three times, right, left, right, cutting her arms across her body in a series of ridgehand strikes, the last angled upwards, from her right hip up to her left shoulder.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki successfully hits Brett with Slashing Gale.

Again, while Sonozaki absorbs the blows from Brett's stick as he tries to batter her, it's him that comes off on the losing end. As he finally rises up to his feet, after the last rotation and strike of his stick, he's left still enough that she's able to catch him with all ease, striking him repeatedly with the knife hand strikes, powered by her wind chi, that batter and slice through Brett like nothing else, before the last one sends him flying again. Perhaps not as high up as her Tornado Hold, but with far more damage done as he lands.

Wobbling and barely able to push himself back onto his skates this time as several open wounds peek through his jumpsuit, the former hockey kid looks....battered. But determined. Jaw set, brow furrowed, he doesn't look like he's about to give up, despite how far on the losing end he is at the moment. Trying to gain some much needed speed by pushing off with his stick again, he tries to skate hard toward Sonozaki, more distance to work with this time. Rather than try to barrel over her though, he flips over soon as he's in range, trying to smash his skate into her from above with a somersaulting crashing kick.

COMBATSYS: Brett successfully hits Sonozaki with Falling Star EX.

*CRUNCH* She is, briefly, very glad that he wasn't wearing actual ice skates. That could be a literally deadly attack with real blades on. As it is, it flattens her straight to the asphalt, with a grunt of pain. Before he can do anything else--he's got that stick after all--she rolls away, shaking her head to clear the lights out of her eyes. That was pretty strong, there, she has to admit to herself.

Lunging up out of her roll, she attains a standing position quickly, and then... she just watches. Partially she's still got some flashing in her eyes, her nerves recovering from the insult of that impact to the head, and partially... she just doesn't want to rush in and get herself crushed. She's in real danger of losing the fight--but that's not her worry right now, except int he abstract.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki focuses on her next action.

Finally getting a clean hit that wasn't already prepared for, Brett finally finds his pace, landing after his Falling Star and rolling away, giving Sonozaki the same breadth to roll away herself. Unsteady as he is from her earlier attacks though, he still tries to keep up that rhythm before he lets her get away completely and gets caught by more of that brutal wind chi.

And where she's hanging back, trying to avoid another blow like that, the hockey fighter is racing in, trying to drive right toward her before she gets too much of a breather and collide with an elbow to the face, reaching out with his other arm in hopes of keeping her still by a grasp on her jacket. It wouldn't end there though, throwing another elbow, then another, before the elbows turn to punches. And if he can get far enough, the final blow would be a smash upward of his stick, trying to swing the heel of it straight up into her jaw.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki fails to interrupt Broad Street Barrage from Brett with Slashing Stream.

COMBATSYS: Sonozaki can no longer fight.

She is hanging back, but not out of fear or worry. She was hoping to change the flow of the fight. Unfortunately, we don't always get what we want. But if she's going to go out, she's going to go out fighting, not cowering. So she lunges, yelling, that chi gathering around her right hand as she drives off her feet, lunging low, rising up a little--

--right into the elbow. That stuns her for the rest of what Brett lands, the last impact sending her up and over to land hard, on her shoulders. And there she remains for a good ten seconds, before pushing up to her elbows, and then, slowly, sitting up.

She waves off the medics, as she rises, and grins despite the bruising already starting to flower. "Not bad," she says, addressing Brett, and then she turns to leave. She doesn't invest in histrionics or drama.

Brett continues on as he manages to catch Sonozaki mid-attack, stemming it before she can give him that same slashing wind-chi as she did before. Not that he's able to appreciate it just at that moment. He simply continues to elbow, then punch Sonozaki until he sends her reeling enough to finish up with taht final stick smash upward.

The momentum of the strike sends Brett further forward past where Sonozaki falls to. Leaning against a barricade, he breathes heavily and whips around, fully expecting her to rise back up to her feet...but the 10 count comes. And she doesn't get up until the unspoken 11th count, his own determined game face falling from his face quickly, sighing to himself.

Just as another lap passes by, the pack racing by and sending jolts up the hockey kid's spine. "GAHHH!!!" he shouts, jumping a little, distracted from Sonozaki's exit. "....do I really have to take the car ride that was supposed to come out of this?" He asks to no one in particular as the announcer makes his win official...not that the audience is really focusing on their fight.
