Miss Teen Southtown Review - by John Doe

A beauty pageant. Or was it an idol contest? I wasn't entirely thrilled when asked to write an article on the Miss Teen Southtown pageant. Beauty pageants, idols, they're not really my thing. But there were two things that heavily weighed on my decision to observe this in the end. The first being that this pageant was made up entirely of popular (and not quite so popular) schoolgirls. Not just schoolgirls, however, -fighting- schoolgirls. Which leads to number two; A 'Combat Segment' was promised.

Wow. Only in Southtown, it seems, can one pull off something like this. Though to no suprise, it worked. It all worked out suprisingly well.

The whole shebang was seperated into three segments, the forementioned Combat, Questions, and Talent. All of them judged by two or more judges, each an employee/student of Justice, Pacific, Seijyun, and Taiyo high schools. All right, so, here's a breakdown on the final three participants:

[Photo of Alexis LaCoeur] Probably the newest of all the new faces, this was the girl that, from her first step onto the stage, seemed to be in the zone. She could be described as a complete natural. I had done a little research to see if she had been in any other pageants before but couldn't find anything, so I was left a bit perlexed. Despite having the lowest combat score, she managed to come out of this a winner.

[Photo of Sakura Kasugano] I thought she was going to win this hands down. But then I realized that a tomboy in a setting like this would actually be putting her at a major disadvantage pretty often. But she wouldn't let something like that stop her, and she put on a good show to the very end utilizing all her strengths very well; I'd say she was easily the crowd favorite overall.

[Photo of Sada Asai] A somewhat new face, I recognized this one from various SNF showings. Call me blind, but I actually had no idea she attended Seijyun. Of the three she would be described as the most balanced, boasting wit and her own brand of charm as well as impressive combat ability. Unfortunatly she seemed to have crippled herself in the first round.

Honorable mentions:

[Photo of Mizuki Kamigawa] A constant resident of the YFCC, Mizuki at first glance doesn't seem to be pageant material. She seemed to have a bit of stage fright and you could tell despite her best to hide it, that she did not feel she was in her environment. However she brought the most amount of culture to the pageant in my eyes. It's a shame she couldn't make it to the very end, there was potential.

[Photo of Ninon Beart] This one, I feel a bit guilty admitting it.. But I liked this girls style. I don't really understand the whole 'gothic lolita' thing, but her almost overwhelming confidence and willingness to 'break the rules' to make a point was pretty impressive.

And there you have it. A nice concept and a colorful cast of participants made this event pretty successful, I think. It's likely next year there will be an even bigger audience.

And I'll be there to review it.
