SNF 2008.09 - Rock Garden! Roberto vs Cherry/Setsuka

Description: Roberto is an easy-going guy, all told. Setsuka carefully maintains a calm demeanor. Rock garden to promote a meditative harmony? No sweat. Then you throw Cherry in and force her to keep pace with Setsuka and it all goes to hell. (Winners: Cherry and Setsuka)

Howard Enterprises wanted to bring beauty to their normal fare of Saturday Night Fight. As a result, they took the fight to the Ryoanji Rock Garden. Of course with this type of beauty is that it can get ugly really fast.

While the soccer goalie/striker has his own misgivings about fighting on such a surface but he has fought on surfaces just as brutal during the Rival Schools situation. And when Roberto comes out he's wearing a Goalie jersey with popped collar and carrying a mesh bag filled with soccer balls though these are indoor soccer balls which resemble giant tennis ball more than soccer ball,

He takes a bit of time to dump its contents down in front of him and kicks a few of around to distribute the balls around the garden before going into stretches.

"Wow... it's like being on a display table at a giant Brookstone."

There is nothing about Cherry Aguirre that says 'minimalist' or 'subdued'. Even in her typical black leather garb, with her flame-red hair and bodacious curves she is amazingly out of place in this rock garden. Her attitude toward it doesn't help, either; distraught Japanese tourists look on in terror as she writes random things in the stones with her toes; she's halfway through "KILROY WAS HERE" when she notices someone moving around in her peripheral vision. Turning to look, she tracks Roberto with her eyes for a moment. And then an additional moment. And then an ADDITIONAL moment.

What? He's an athletic young man. She can appreciate.

The soccer balls get her interest, though, and she glances at them with a wry smile. Seeding the battlefield... not a bad decision, all things told. "I'd heard the high schoolers in this country used all sorts of wacky martial arts," she comments idly. "Not that I mind. I played field hocky, those bitches did not screw around."

Setsuka actually finds the rock garden elegant. Soothing. Zen. She is, after all, Japanese--perhaps it's racial memory, or just that she can appreciate the beauty of the rock garden. That the three of them--Roberto, versus his two opponents, her and Cherry--will soon be demolishing the garden's peace... well, it actually makes her a little sad to think about it. Still, she rises, from where she was seated, kneeling on a flat rock that is often used by visitors to rest. Her sword lays next to her on the rock; only after she is up from the rock does she pick the weapon up.

And then she looks at Roberto, dumping soccer balls all over the rocks... already disturbing the patterns therein. Then she turns to Cherry; the other woman gets an amused, somewhat knowing smile. "No backstabbing today, mmm?" she murmurs, towards her partner--either she's asking, or perhaps she's promising... hard to tell.

Finally, she joins her teammate, putting her dismay at the imminent destruction of the garden to the back of her mind; leaning forward slightly, she turns her attention back to Roberto as she shifts to be right-shoulder forward, body turned towards her left, the blade held almost horizontally, the slightest *click* indicating it's been released from its stays. "Shall we?"

Roberto's eyes fall immediately to the sword that Setsuka's carrying bringing up even more bad memories of when he ended up injured because of Hyo's blade. Though not nearly as long and if he's facing off against both of them, he's fairly certain that she probably doesn't have Hyo's skill either. Even still that blade is enough to make the soccer phenom touch his arm as an unconscious reaction.

Then there's Cherry. The red hair pretty much draws attention to her which isn't hard since quite frankly there's not much else to draw attention away from it other than those previously dispersed soccer balls and his other opponent. And he doesn't dare giving either opponent more attention than the other less he end up missing soccer season at Taiyo University. He's part of the Gorin program which is being used to train future Olympians and with it being so competitive he can't afford to miss a season so early on.

Roberto has to start things off and so he moves to one of his soccer balls and begins to dribble as he approaches Cherry with a series of step overs and fakes as if dribbling around opponents before jumping up with quick knee to her stomach.

Ah, and then there was Setsuka. For such a placid woman, she really appears to grate on Cherry, who turns a little too slowly to see her teammate arrive. It's as if her entire body is shifting in slow motion, highly cinematic. "Awesome. Combat Pele is here, and now so is Wynona Rider, circa 'Beetlejuice'. Fun for the entire family." Her tone of voice implies that it very clearly will NOT be fun for the entire family. It may not even be fun for a single family member, or small discussion groups of family members. But she's going to see this through. She will make it work. Oh yes.

"I made the Towering Pillar of Anime Fanboy work last week," she murmurs, not 100% meaning to do so aloud. "I can do this too."

Comments about backstabbing are backburnered, however, once Roberto decides to spring into action. The dribbling is a little distracting, but thankfully the Fighting Diva is able to keep her eye on the proverbial rather than literal ball. In fact, her defense is nothing short of a dramatic flourish; she presses her forearm into the knee, taking the time to lean forward toward Roberto for a moment, all cleavage and alluring smile as she says, somewhat huskily, "Nice control of your balls, there." The jokes write themselves, folks.

She then proceeds to push back, the twist forward in a little jump, looking to lock her ankles around Roberto's throat. If she gets this unusual grip, Cherry twists her entire body, spinning to drive Roberto into the ground with her knees before leaping off to receive the accolades of the crowd!

Really, all the antagonism is Cherry's; Setsuka recognizes that the diva 'doesn't like her', and so simply returns Cherry's disdain with an acid sort of smile. She only has to work with the woman for this fight... and sinking a blade into one's teammate's back, justified or not, rarely comes across well. She -does- want to continue to be able to do these things, occasionally.

Roberto, however, garners her interest more, as he comes in at Cherry. Soccer... she can't say she's really familiar with it. But the method of attack becomes clear. And her mission is clear, too--she waits, just a moment, until Cherry's attempting to lock her legs around the man's head.

Then she strikes, leaping upwards, judging where Roberto is likely to be just a fraction of a second later, and firing off a quick flying kick at the young man.

She has to follow Cherry's lead... and Cherry hers, so hopefully they can both stick to it. Setsuka isn't so sure about herself, really.

Roberto ends up being a victim of circumstance as when Cherry's legs lock around his head and he doesn't quite get his hands up in time to stop her from locking on but just before she manages to twist the soccer star down to the ground he ends up flailing wildly before accidentally slapping aside Setsuka's kick then proceeding to hit the ground with a dull thump plus a bit of rattling from the rocks being disturbed.

When Cherry stands up he crawls to freedom before moving towards Setsuka with a pair of fists poised to punch the swordswoman's head as if it was soccer shot on goal though he steps into it a bit more to add a bit of oomph!

Setsuka's kick slapped aside, she spins around in midair, as she lands into a brief crouch. Cherry's successful assault is noted, coolly, as she drops. Already the fight impacts the rock garden--but that's the furthest thing from her mind right now. Instead, she's intently studying Roberto, as he crawls away from Cherry and gets back up. Clearly, he's coming her way--the approach is something less than subtle.

Rather than attempt to avoid, she simply takes the impact--on her forearms, though, not her head. It's easier that way; she pushes back, to force him away from her, and brings her weapon to play for the first time, as she grips the weapon firmly in her left hand, in the scabbard, right below the hilt... and the grip of the weapon in her right.

Then she's slashing outwards, the blade just short of cutting into Roberto's chest... but the purple-white arc of Psycho Power that the tip of the blade cuts might. Hopefully, she thinks, Cherry can capitalize on this.

Well, that worked better than she'd hoped. Springing to safety a few yards away, Cherry lands with an obvious flourish, spreading her hands wide and taking a little bow. It's showboat-y, but that's what she's here for. People who get off on punching are a little weird, in her book... the adrenaline rush and the fame and fortune, however, are worthy goals for sure. "Thank you, thank you," she says, turning back just in time to see Setsuka adroitly defend herself. "For my next trick, I get my teammate to sing the Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies version of 'Rainbow Connection'!"

The crowd stares at her in silent disbelief, making Cherry sigh. "Philistines."

And then it's attacking time. Indeed, in a 1v2, it's best to capitalize on your teammate's openings and vice versa. That, and the fight stipulated fairly clearly that teamwork was important. "I'm contractually obligated not to let you hang out to dry, Vampirella," Cherry mutters, sprinting off at a good clip and attempting to get around Roberto's other side, lashing out with a palm strike to his side that carries a good degree of force behind it.

The soccer star is quick to recoil after the delivery of his two fisted punch however

The soccer star is quick to recoil after the delivery of his two fisted punch however, Setsuka is quick upon his heels with a sword strike. The soccer star's eyes bulge open for a moment before he begins to realize that the sword won't touch. A pair of glowing red goalie glove clad hands move to intercept the psionic energy however it's too little, too late.

The energy forces the normally agile goalie to stumble right into the palm strike which aided by the psycho power slash manages to fold his body before he ends up dropping to the ground once more with a loud grunt.

There's something of a mocking laugh as the sword-wielding assassin watches Roberto try to react. Like it or not, she and Cherry -do- make a pretty good team. With Roberto stumbling backwards, Setsuka is inclined simply to pursue--which she does, leaping forward, tucking herself into a ball, almost; her blade held in her right, in a reversed grip, left on the pommel as she drops towards the soccer-fighter.

Her intent should be clear--she's going to drop down onto Roberto, and attempt to stab him. Oh, it won't be fatal--shouldn't even cause serious internal injuries. She's very precise about how she places her attacks, where she aims for. Maximum pain, minimum damage... is her usual mode.

As usual, she's smiling, her lips bent in a crooked almost-grin. Her blue eyes are starting to sparkle--not literally, but it's there nonetheless--as she begins to really get into the fight.

Knowing her hit has connected is a satisfying feeling, but a part of Cherry is sympathetic to Roberto, having to tackle two fighters at once and apparently not having a fun time of it. Well, that and Setsuka appears to be intent on pressing the advantage, and thus the Fighting Diva is compelled to do so as well. It's that *sword* that's bugging her. Katana's two blades were enough of a reason last week for Cherry to go nuts and attempt to crack open his skull. Of course, it was the blades COUPLED with a few offenses against good taste, which may be why the Idahoan hasn't tried to snap Setsuka in half yet. Her entire face says 'we'll see', for sure.

But she's going to play the teamwork angle for what it's worth, so as the dark swordswoman rushes in for the kill, Cherry decides to simply duck in there and bop Roberto one on the nose. Not exactly her mightiest attack, but perhaps it's just a show of her good feeling. Well, that and her actual spoken dialogue: "For what it's worth, I'm sorry about this. Usually I only beat up hot guys by appointment, with a safe word and everything."

That sound you hear is 10,000,000 Japanese mothers ordering their children out of the room and starting a letter-writing campaign to Howard Enterprises, and an equal number of Japanese husbands who are searching for 'Cherry Aguirre' on YouTube as we speak.

That blade. It seems to give the soccer star a sense of urgency as he does what looks to be a soccer cut. One could even compare the move that he does to Ronaldinho's Flip Flap. You could even imagine the soccer ball on his foot as he moves. The first imaginary touch pulls him out of the way of Setsuka's leaping stab from above. The second imaginary touch had he been a fraction of a second faster would have pulled him out of the way of Cherry's punch to the mush instead of catching him in the nose it catches him in the jaw. And even still, Cherry's intent was seen.

He smiles at Cherry while still moving back towards her. "I knew what I was getting into when I signed the waiver." He obviously hasn't seen some of the crazier SNF matches set up has he?

Attempting to slide back into range, he snaps out three kicks to Cherry's side. "I'm fine as long as certain conditions are met." Don't endanger his soccer career and he's a happy camper.

"Good attitude," Cherry says with a smirk, stepping back from the punch but not willing to give ground just yet. Maybe she can make this so close-quarters and tight packed that Setsuka might have to resort to fisticuffs like everyone else. Not that this is likely, but hey. "I li--"

Cherry's response is cut short as Roberto decides to come right at her. Deciding she's been insulated enough from damage that she can afford to take a little, the Fighting Diva tries to simply weather the storm. The storm, however, has been upgraded to Tropical Kick Storm Roberto, and rather than standing her ground the redhead gets pushed away, landing in a crouch in the sand. Still, she seems in good humor. "Haha. In your rock garden, disrupting your cosmic harmony, lawl." Yes, she said 'lawl'. Shut up.

But Roberto is not free and clear just yet. Springing up from her crouch, Cherry makes one short hop, and then a much higher one... and the apex of her leap turns into a sailing axe kick, looking to do nothing less but smash Roberto into the ground, hard. There's even an extra added bonus of a blazing fiery aura around her leg, for kicks. GET IT? FOR KICKS? HAW HAW.

Why is -Setsuka- always the bad guy in these things? ... wait. ... nevermind. Setsuka lands, her blade nearly embedded into the rocks--and when she pulls it out, a rock splits in two. Testamen to the keenness of her blade. Rather lazily, she rises again, just in time to see Cherry take the three kicks in the side. It surely looks painful. If she has any idea that Cherry might try to sabotage Setsuka, so to speak... she seems to be ignoring it. It isn't a concern--Setsuka's blade is meant for close-quarters work. Of course...

She does have other weapons available to her as well; as Cherry comes in with her high, flaming axe kick, Setsuka goes low. Her attack is meant merely to destabilize, to distract--nothing more. An annoyance.

That's why, when she attacks low to accompany Cherry's high, she's attacking with the scabbard--ducking low and sweeping it out to catch Roberto behind the knees, to dump him onto his butt, perhaps. Or not.

Cherry's attack is both a blessing and a curse. The soccer star knew that he needed to get the hell out of the way however he just doesn't have his feet where they need to be to manuever out of the way or his hands where they need to be to deflect it and so he takes the chi-enhanced axe kick to the skull.

Of course the blessing was in the fact that the stumble backwards put him in position to deal with the sword woman's attack.

The scabbard does little more than clip his leg as he dives forward head first into Setsuka's stomach. On the pitch, it may have been a game winner, but on SNF it's little more than a small, insignificant goal. It puts him a step in the right direction but not much else.

Don't underestimate the power of a 'game winner'--the combination works out, but not in the way the assassin thought it would, and not for who she thought it would. End result--she folds around his stomach, unable to stop the gasp of pain as he basically headbutts her just above where she might want to make a baby someday. The pain is immediate, intense... and wonderful. Even her own pain can be beautiful, she reflects.. as she rises to her feet, once she's rolled away from the fighter.

The pain is quickly subdued and sublimated--pain is a familiar friend, the kind that rips you up and that you love... well... some do. Setsuka rolls her neck, popping some vertebrae back into position--and then she jolts forward. It's a smooth movement; suddenly she's leaning forward, and then she's blurring, and then she's cutting outwards at Roberto, her blade aimed to cut him from shoulder to hip, on the bias.

Cherry is left scratching her head a bit at this turn of events. Rebounding back across the field after her kick connects -- the main principle of her fighting style being to stay in motion, after all -- the Fighting Diva has a front-row seat when Roberto really plows into Setsuka. It looks painful, that's for sure; despite herself, the Diva even winces a bit. "Oooh, a Zidaneing. That hadda hurt." A brief pause. "And god, how many puns involving 'head' just filtered through my brain?"

But Roberto's on the ropes... and Cherry sees her opportunity to close this up. In fact, as Setsuka's cut is heading on the diagonal, from an impossible angle and at blurring speed, Cherry is looking to smack a stunning fist into Roberto's stomach. Should she get that blow in, she follows up with a lightspeed barrage of punches before gripping Roberto by the front of his shirt and just... chucking him at a relaxation rock. Yeah, that's the ticket. Relaxation rock is relaxing.

Roberto manages to pull off some amazing footwork in dealing with Setsuka's slash. He manages to move just inches ahead of Setsuka's slash with a quick shuffle step. He's even about to slip in right behind Setsuka and all of a sudden he gets drive by Cherry'd. He notices the attack and he pauses in his shuffle step to attempt to hold his ground against the punches and the toss but his hands weren't quick enough and his base not stable enough to save him.

Roberto's toss lands him right on relaxation rock but the impact is anything but. Of course, the upside is that it places him near one of his soccer balls. Which he hasn't used in an aggressive capacity once. He's about to now, sending a fiery soccer ball screaming at Cherry with explosive results if it should hit.

Now that's new.

Fiery soccer ball coming at you? Does it even make sense? The answer is no. But Cherry adores a challenge, yes she does. So rather than just traipse out of the way of the stupid thing, which is probably the smart choice, she puts her hand out like a waitress about to deliver food, and starts gathering a sphere of her own fiery energy. She can do big explosive spheres too, sir.

The problem is that Roberto's is already in the air, but *Cherry's* is still forming. In a nice dramatic twist, the blazing shot blows right through the forming of Cherry's own potent technique... and while it's enough to take some of the edge off, the result is not a lot. In fact the soccer ball smacks her square in the stomach and slams her into one of the walls of the garden, hard.

But it ain't enough to knock her out. Indeed, when she gets up and starts walking toward the arena center again, holding on e hand to her face, she's cackling insanely. "Oh man. So many puns this fight. That's gotta stop."

She was, in fact, ready to charge forward--but then Cherry has to ruin it. RUIN IT! Actually she does a fine job of avoiding total disaster, but Setsuka wouldn't say a damn thing about it. Because that's just not her style. It chafes... but she decided, on a whim, to actually follow the rules... and so she can not, by the rules, do anything.

So she just watches Roberto, her eyes narrowed, tracking the young man and doing her best to unnerve him... perhaps it won't work so well, but that intense gaze has thrown off fighters before.

COMBATSYS: Setsuka takes no action.

As his leg recoils from that shot, he takes a deep breath. It took a lot out of him to be sure however,He had the capability to push harder if need be and push he will. It wasn't quite that time yet. Instead he still had to make a bit more of an impact. After all he wasn't the type to go quietly into the night.

The narrowed eyes draw the star striker's attention and so he goes rushing towards her before swinging a foot hard. Looks don't usually unnerve him. If she wants to intimidate him, she should probably get a sword like Hyo's or threaten his soccer season. Yeah, that would work.

Go quietly? Heaven forfend. Well--a sword is, really, a very personal thing. Yes, of course swords are built to certain specifications. But Hyo's sword is best for him--and Setsuka's sword is best for her. However, her blade is not what is brought to bear as Roberto comes charging in. She smiles, faintly, and begins shimmering, just a fraction of a second before Roberto's kick comes slamming into her.

The shimmer was her preparing--his contact seems almost to shatter her, to make her fly apart in shards of purple-white energy. Only... she reforms behind him, it seems, slashing her right arm downwards--a blade of pure psionic energy raked across his body, while he's still extending that leg.

The counterattack should, she believes, fell the man--to end this fight. So confident is she that she turns away from him, walking towards the exit of the garden.

Roberto just had something new added to the list of things that unnerve him. People seeming to shatter upon him making impact with them. With his leg still extended he wears a momentary what the fuck look on his face just before the energy rakes across his back.

Setsuka's back turns and he wants to give a parting gift but his body says, 'No more.' As a result his body stays there. Face becoming quite intimate with the rocks in the garden.
