SNF 2008.02 - Just Deserts! Makoto vs Maki,CA:Oswald

Description: Welcome to the desert! The desert that is, thanks to a lot of money, made entirely from platforms! Seriously, who lets people do that sort of thing anyway? (Winner: Makoto)

There are times he thinks he really should not have tried to rig that bet in Greece. This time he had prior warning, names, pictures even a set of gps coordinates. In the middle of the god damned desert, too!
His options were pretty limited in the desert, he'd probably get his face smashed in if he chose to interlope directly into this match, there were no ideal vantage points, no good places to hide... just a crater like bowl of sand in the middle of a bland and harsh desert, vibrant with life yet devoid of plants. What an antipode.

Oswald was growing to like his role, this Agent-of-the-Week setup that he apparantly has fallen into sice his surprise victory at Greece, but victories set aside, it was more the fact he always ended up seeing the very best of his opponents. It was a good show and experience for him and it was certainly exciting for the audience. At a cost easily clearing $100,000, the past five days have left the seasoned Irish Gambler in the desert with a large crew, most of which had left by this evening, to build a covert, and monumental (if juryrigged) array of pneumatics and steel... all hidden now under a veil of windswept sand.

Wait till the audience and the SNF staff got a hold of this - he never actually informed them of this surprise change.

White hair, red eyes, many would call him albino if he wasn't so deeply tanned. The Karnoffel player is seated at the rim of the sandy crater, waiting for the two Japanese-named fighers to arrive. He's dressed mainly in loose whites, still rather formal in shirt, greyish kahki-like pants along with. At his feet is a bullhorn, in case he'd need it, maybe they'd be civil and say hello? Maybe not... for now, in the distance, Oswald bows when they would become visible, and behind him, along the rim are high-staff spotlights, each turning on one after the other to light up the sandy base of the crater.

A desert isn't entirely the typical place for a fight, but Genryusai Maki is always ready for a fight anywhere. She has some extra water thanks to her assistants, but for now she's warming up a little in the general fighting area.

Makoto certainly does not know anything is different, despite her tendency to show up early: 'early' does not mean days in advance, it means hours!

She is walking along the sand and has been for some time, getting the feel of it under her bare feet. It's about the same as last time she fought someone at it; she doesn't like the raspy feel but there's only so much she can do about it.

Having come to the end of her circuit (which was quite long; Makoto tends to get around very well on her two feet, since she doesn't drive) Makoto gives a fairly friendly salute off to the others. Maki she knows vaguely, from other matches, Oswald not at all. A /suit/ in the middle of the desert is worth a stare.

A shame, they didn't seem much for greetings. That's alright, though, that's what the bullhorn was for. It's so unsubtle of him, at that, but sometimes subtlety wasn't called for, there's not much in the way of options for him out here in any light.
It's a wonderful amber-orange glow to the sky as the sun is at the crest of setting, keeping everything from getting all too hot, something that Oswald is thankful for as even now he takes a bit of water and pours it on his head to keep his hair moist. He wasn't going to make the first move, no. They were the fighters and he didn't want to screw bookies out of their margins. He made enough enemies LAST time he did that. For now, he takes a seat a good distance away, knees up, hunched forward, elbows upon knees.
"*TCHK* READY WHEN YOU ARE, LADIES! *TCHK*" he wasn't yelling, but compared to the silence of the desert, his voice is glaringly loud through the bullhorn.

Makoto did wave. That's like a greeting.

"All right!" Makoto calls back. She lacks a megaphone, so she does it the normal way; yelling. Yelling is good. Tightening her belt, Makoto turns to Maki, dips into a very slight bow, and then, about half a second later, bursts into action.

'Action' is, in this case, ignoring Oswald! From Makoto's experience, Chaos Agents do what they want, when they want, and until then, it's best to just not pay attention to them at all. Instead, she runs toward Maki, her big feet plowing up sand behind her as she sprints, leaping about ten feet back and performing a wildly spinning jump kick at Maki. "Haaa!"

As Makoto's kick comes at Maki, the Bushin practitioner gets into a defensive stance, readying herself for impact. When it gets close enough, Maki raises her tonfa along with her arm to deflect the incoming attack away from her. She slides back a little in the sand, her sneakers leaving leaving a slightly larger than normal footprint in the sand.

"Good one," Maki says with a quick nod, but then the conversation stops in favor of more action. This time, Maki goes directly at Makoto while bringing her tonfa up in a perpendicular strike, aiming directly at the karate fighter's shoulders as she dashes at her.

The bullhorn is put aside, sound-bell downwards, leaving it balancing on the sandy rim. Sitting up a bit more alert now, he brings the water bottle up to his mouth and opens it, squirting a mouth full in and swishing it around before moving to stand. He wanted to at least be hard to see once he starts springing his little surprises on them, so he shuffles a bit over to one of the tall poles that the spotlights sit atop.

If Maki took a moment, she may realize that just under her feet is something far harder than sand... in fact...

The earth shudders hard as the tonfa is brought up toward Makoto's body, and for a second, it's almost as if the earth drops away from around the pair as the rumbling and vibrations from the pneumatics a good ten feet below the fighters pushes a tremendous steel and glass platform up with the pair atop. The glass bits light up in whites and blues, lighting the floor up and the rest of the parts of the floor that continue to rise even as the center stage stops... there are many smaller platforms now, some higher, some lower than the center 'stage'.

How the hell did he get this done in nothing but a few days?

"Mind that first step!" He yells across the now much shorter distance as the platform levels near the lip, still a good gap between, "It's a big one."

The tonfa hits Makoto rather solidly, and Makoto goes back, back -

- just as the platform goes up, up! She realizes as she falls that this is not what the desert looked like a few moments ago; Makoto has a second or two to realize this before she lands, flat on her back, on a slightly lower platform that is also going up - just not as much.

"Ow," Makoto says, mostly to herself, as she flips back up to her feet. She doesn't even bother jumping up to Maki's level, instead glancing over to Oswald as she tenses, preparing herself; her scarf drifts in the breeze. "Did /you/ do that? Because most deserts, they don't have things buried under them!"

COMBATSYS: Makoto gathers her will.

With the platform abruptly going up, Maki is caught a bit off guard too. She's on the offensive, but with the sudden change in elevation, it's enough to cause her to stumble a little, but not fall. Still, this presents an unusual dilemma to her fighting against Makoto. For the time being, she simply gets into a more alert position, preparing for whatever may come next.

Oh crud, they actually were talking to him?

It takes a few moments for Oswald to walk back to the bullhorn he left behind, and there's a bit of a squelch and whine as he powers it up again. "THEY TOLD ME TO MAKE IT INTERESTING!" If there were nomads or whatnot in the desert, they might be quite confused as to just where that voice is coming from if they weren't aware of the SNF arrangements here.
"HOPE YOU DON'T MIND!" it's not really a question, just more of a 'it's going to happen wether you like it or not' kind of statement. At least he's polite about it, right?
While the microphone was off, he can't help but chuckle to himself, he's really quite pleased with this overall. The pneumatics fired off without a hitch, sand and all! "YOU LADIES DESERVED A FITTING STAGE. SO I BUILT ONE! OH YES, AND ONE MORE THING..." A little beep signals off as he presses a button on a little black remote... "...STAY ON YOUR TOES!"

It's kind of a brutish thing to do, but a panel from behind Maki, on one of the higher rasied pillars suddenly shoves forward with a hiss, aiming to strike her back and push her into the lowered part of the pit where Makoto fell....

And that's enough for Makoto to act.

Makoto sees the panel move toward Maki, even from her odd angle, and doesn't even wait for it to hit or for Maki to have a chance to right herself; she tenses for a moment before leaping almost straight vertically, fist outstretched to meet Maki if she starts to fall.

She has the vague urge to yell 'shoryuken', but doesn't. "OKAY THEN!" Makoto yells at Oswald, instead.

With the incoming panel, Maki simply turns and braces herself for the impact, meaning that when she's knocked backwards, she's fully alert, and when she sees Makoto coming at her, the blonde-haired ninja does a backwards somersault (in mid-air, yes) and avoids the incoming punch from Makoto. When she lands, Maki attempts to grab the karate fighter from behind and throw her into the ground.

He was at ease now, now holding a modicum of control over the environment meant he could somewhat have things go by his rules. A hand passively reaches up and rubs where there are still spot-bandaged cuts from the little (huge) altracation he managed to get himself into at the Saikyo Dojo, he didn't like the idea of getting in a 2v1 again.
There was nothing he needed to do for now.

When Maki gets her grip just right, she swiftly throws Makoto into the ground, face first.

Makoto might have more to say to Oswald when she's not being thrown around.

Makoto hits the ground, although not as hard as she could have; she seems to have been able to roll with it, at least a little bit, and catch herself with one of her arms. She comes up with one of her feet snaking out, toward Maki's ankles, as Makoto tries to pull her down to the ground. If she manages it, she follows it up with a strong downward smash with the heel of her head, right towards Maki's solar plexis.

While she tries this, Makoto tries to keep an eye on Oswald. And the platforms. What if the platforms have /bombs/? This is something that she sho uld probably try to be aware of before they shoot them.

COMBATSYS: Maki fails to interrupt Araiso from Makoto with Bushin Senpuu Kyaku.

As the karate fighter attempts to return the favor, Maki attempts to use her signature attack by dropping onto the tip of her tonfa and spinning around, but unfortunately her timing is very off. She's caught and is hit hard by the attacks of Makoto's technique. This leaves her a bit dazed as she slowly tries to get up.

Only on SNF, right?

Ahh, finally the temperature was getting nice and comfortable, like a perfect midsummer night if only it wasn't so damn dry. It was a good hit, a clean one at that the punctuated the little pause in the fight, just as Maki aims to get herself up.
Putting the strap of the bullhorn over a shouler and letting it hang loose a little lower, Oswald keeps his eyes on the little screen on the remote, using a little trackpoint ball to navigate through one option... another... yes... this.
There's no rumbling like a second ago, no, this time the lower platform just gives a sudden burst of speed upwards, and the floor tilts up hard on one side. The aim was to toss the pair a short ways into the air, so that they'd land near the center once more. All the better for the SNF cameras tuning in from all around...

Makoto slowly rises up from smashing Maki in the torso and then - surprise platform!

Makoto's arms windmill as she flies through the air, providing a rather good shot for the cameras as she arcs up, then down, landing with a heavy thud on the central platform. And badly too; the landing really stung, much as she isn't going to admit it.

She gets back to her feet and weaves a little, slightly dazed from the trip up and hitting her head. "Stupid moving platforms," she says, mostly to herself. "They should stay put now that they're up!"

Somehow, the platform doesn't get Maki as well as it did Makoto. Maybe because Maki's getting used to this, and is starting to get a feel for what to expect. Again, she's on the defensive, and again she barely feels a thing. Nonetheless, she's starting to feel a little weary from this whole battle, which is why she takes a moment to rest.

That one had a bit more power than he expected, it will need adjustment in the future. There's a little groan of sympathetic pain that comes from him as he sees Makoto land, but in a change of events, seems Maki didn't quite have it so bad at all.
There was a distinct tingle in his head now, he had been a nuisance to the two ladies for a bit now... It was probably only a matter of time before he gets drawn into this or at least a paranoid notion of his seems to convince him it's imminent.

There's a brisk inhale and squaring of his shoulders - a bit from the preparation, a bit more from the two getting back up and ready to continue.

Makoto only really needed a few moments to let everything stop spinning around her. She's much better now, honest.

Makoto looks across at Maki, then along to another platform a little closer to Oswald. She looks from one to the other twice more, the hint of an idea crossing her mind. "HEY, Chaos guy!" Makoto yells, loosening up a little. "Can you do something for me?"

Makoto then suddenly darts forward, so fast she actually seems to blur a little bit, arms reaching to try to grab onto Maki. If she manages it, she literally picks Maki up (sometimes, being strong is an asset) and throws her bodily in Oswald's direction. "INCOMING!"

"...you can't be serious..." Oswald mutters to himself as one grabs the other... and ... what strength!

Well he had ample time to move out of the way from the flying girl, but the sand eats at his agility, making his push away troublesome. Ahh, he earned his punishment, he's tormented them quite a bit. Bracing in, he sees the leg come toward him, expecting it a bit higher though and instead it cuts out his feet from under him... The crest of the crater's edge isn't too steep, thankfully, but it does afford him a little trip skidding down one side before he anchors himself again to prevent himself from going all the way downhill.
Maki had already responded, and now it was a bit more worriesome for Makoto if she were to decide Oswald was to go down first... So he heft the bullhorn and grabs it by the strap, giving his body a quick twist like an olympic athlete doing a hammer toss, flinging the bullhorn toward the ninja.

The bullhorn does not, despite what would normally happen, hit Makoto. Why not?

Because she's not on that platform anymore! She is actually hanging just off it at the top, in front, although the bullhorn comes close enough to make her duck out of reflex even though it probably wouldn't have hit anyway.

She hangs there for a few moments, one hand holding her up and one foot planted on the side of the stage despite the uncomfortable-looking angle it suspends her at. Unlike Maki, she has no particular desire to start breaking the rules and beating up the Chaos Agent (yet) and so she is staring r ather intently at the Bushin-Ryu user.

Makoto throws herself downward, foot-first, at the side of Maki's head; she's yelling the whole way, a wordless scream that she thinks give her power. MAYBE IT DOES. If she hits, she springs off just a little and follows it up with a series of spinning, arcing kicks before the last one is aimed to boot Maki unceremoniously straight up.

And then, of course, back down, as gravity gets to do its part, right onto Makoto's waiting fist.

Or is she? Just as she's about to go down again, her eyes open, and she uses her tonfa to spring back onto her feet. Despite being a bit bloodied and bruised, she's regained her adrenaline somehow.

Now this wasn't expected. He was all ready and opt in case Makoto wished to rush him, however it seems she's not up for co-operating. Oswald's not complaining in the slightest.
Remote is stowed and instead a single card is drawn from the pocket, the brushed aluminium edges lined with sharpened points. Stance wider now, feet anchored as best as they can be in a floor of sand, he gives a familiar roll of his arm and flick of wrist, hurling the card through the windless air toward Makoto.

Makoto has never fought Oswald before. The flick of his wrist catches Makoto by surprise; she doesn't know what it represents other than a somewhat dramatic motion, and as such doesn't know to duck an incoming card. That, and it's a card! How much damage can it actually do?

The answer is 'a lot'. It even knocks Makoto over, and she's a little slower than previously about getting up - possibly because there is now a bladed card stuck in her shoulder. She picks it out, looking at it rather incredulously and ignoring the slowly bleeding wound.

"That," she eventually decides, "is one heck of a paper cut."

Discarding the card by tossing it over her shoulder, into the sand, Makoto edges forward toward Maki - and then back, slightly, as she feints, trying to get the Bushin-Ryu expert to come after her. She even makes a come-here gesture with her less wounded shoulder while watching; much less attention is paid to Oswald, except to make sure he's not going to throw another card. That stung!

With her energy returning suddenly, Maki decides to take this adrenaline rush and use it to her full advantage. She focuses all of her mind into herself, and then charges at Makoto. If she successfully pulls this off, she'll deliver a swift flurry of tonfa strikes and kicks.

Papercut is quite a word for it. Oswald is scrambling back up the side now, his stature low and wide as he tries to stay afoot in the sand, finally getting himself nice and steady for the first time since the kick from the tonfa-wielding girl... and it still stung.

The dash from Maki was enough of a signal for Oswald to stay back. He wasn't supposed to be a main participant after all. He had to stay ready in case the anger vented his way...

Makoto fails to keep up with the flurry - oh, she manages it for a few seconds, but then her hands always seem to be in /just/ the wrong place and the tonfa whistles past her guard, smashing into her shoulder (including the already wounded one) and arms and torso.

What it seems to make Makoto as much as anything else is angry. Maybe not really furious, like some berserkers would be, but enough that the adrenaline makes her face a little reddish and she can fight through the injury. She doesn't even really wait for the flurry to finish before driving one enormously strong punch forward, straight toward Maki's stomach.

Makoto follows this up with a flurry of faster attacks, using both arms now to rain the punches down faster than previously, striking head-on until they abruptly stop for a few instants. The delay was just for Makoto to pull back, tensing, and then deliver one massive uppercut straight at the bottom of Maki's chin! She'll deal with Oswald /after/, if she's still standing; there's not much left in her no matter how much she tries to make it look like there is.

A wave out? Sure seems like that puts an end to the fight. Oswald can't help but look at bit uneasy at the sheer tenacity of Maki. Each time she goes down, she gets herself back up yet this time she seems to be up even against her own better judgement and willpower. Thankfully she gets the flag in to 'tap out' before things get too out of control.
Some people just have a drive in them. He really didn't quite get it.
"Well." He utters quietly to himself, low tone voice could be overheard easily enough as the officials start streaming in now to give Maki a helpnig hand, "Quite a finish. Did you enjoy the platforms, Miss Makoto?" He was playing with fire by addressing so casually after being a knife in her side...

Makoto takes several long, cleansing breaths after her quick ducking of the thrown tonfa. That's what you get for using last-ditch, accidental attacks.

She eventually straightens up enough to nod to Oswald without looking weak, even through she's on the verge of collapsing. "They were - interesting," is what she says. Worse than the ones at Sea World. /THese/ ones move.

A few moments later, and: "I think I'd like to sit down, though."

"Well you have all the time in the world now." He smirks a bit and reaches into his pocket again, the little beep that emits is soon punctuated by the groan of steel behind him as the entire thing seems to lose compression as it slinks back down with a slow hiss and shudder of metals grinding against metals. Hardly streamlined or impressive, but it did the job.
"Have a good evening, and good show. Do find some shelter though, night will be here soon and I hear it gets chilly." Oswald offers a gentlemantly bow before he turns to make his way to some of the media trailers and such that were set up to film the combat.
