SNF 2007.06 - Tran Gets Five Tries

Description: Kain faces off against Dr. Tran plus some of the most skilled paramedics around to keep the good doctor up and running. It looks pretty one-sided for a while, but Tran starts to show his real power after sustaining a number of blows to the head. (Winner: Kain)

Ah, the roar of the crowd. The cheering, the good wishes. Dr. Tran can't get enough of it. It's wonderful, it's invigorating, bolstering the soul.

It's like they're cheering for a guy walking down death row.

Of course, most of the crowd knows that Kain's the heavy favorite in this one. Medical technology might be great, but...well, Kain is /Kain/, and Dr. Tran, while not a total nobody, isn't real famous. How long can the doctor even last? That's the real draw of this fight, and Tran knows it. He's fought Kain before...with like half a dozen other people. He still remembers how bad the man can hurt.

But you know what? WHO THE HELL CARES?! This is the SNF MAIN EVENT, BABY! Even if Tran gets totally crushed, at least his name'll get out there - maybe someone will be browsing through the weeks matches, see his name, and be like, 'hey, that's the guy who Kain squashed repeatedly! Let's watch!' It's the big time, baby.

Still...it's a little bit late, Tran can't help but think as he walks into the arena, waving and smiling for all he's worth. It's cool and all, but he doesn't need the money anymore, and he's honestly not sure whether or not being more recognizable is a good thing at this point. Well, he'll find out soon enough, at least.

Assuming he lives, anyway.

It's a good thing Tran isn't feeling apprehensive about this match, because he would have some time to dwell on it. Kain is a good ten minutes late, although the announcer continues to reassure the crowd that Heinlein will arrive, and attempts to keep them calm. But Heinlein is a busy man, and for the past week or so he's been focused on something /much/ more important than SNF. And only when he was sure of himself did he leave his estate to head to the fight.
Finally Kain strides into the arena, with a thin smile on his face. He looks Tran over, then glances at the medical staff waiting nearby. He'll have to avoid beating Tran /too/ savagely if he wants this to be a decent test... There's only so much that can be done if he snaps some limbs, for instance. Kain nods to Tran, still smiling in an unsettling manner. "Ready whenever you are."

Well, truth be told, it does get a little bit boring while Tran waits. Why would Kain be late? Maybe he's trying to psych Tran out, put him off his game. Maybe that means he's not as tough as the doctor thought? Or maybe that's just what he wants Tran to think, to lure him off guard. It goes around in circles for a little while, and then thankfully, Kain arrives.

"Alright! Shit, here goes nothing!" The fight! signal is quickly given, and Tran wastes no time in rushing ahead toward Kain, completely heedless of his own safety. Leaping into the air, he twists around, bringing both feet out in front of him to try to nail Kain with a flying dropkick. Go for broke!

This may perhaps be a bad omen for Kain's chances in this fight. Tran manages to hit Heinlein full on in the chest, sending him staggering backwards before he finally falls to his back. It's the work of a moment to flip over and pop back up to his feet, but that's still not a good way for Kain to get things started. He still has some tricks up his sleeve, though.
Kain quickly dashes in toward Tran, his foot bursting into flame. But it's not the purple flame that Kain has usually used. No, this flame is pitch black, seeming to almost absorb light rather than emitting it. Tran will only have a moment to dwell on that, though, before Kain attempts to launch him into the air with a high-angled explosive kick.

Wait, wait, wait. Tran feels his feet hit something, nice and solid. It...it couldn't be, right? Well, damn. That's sort of a shock, to be perfectly honest. Landing roughly, he similarly hops back up to his feet, only to see Kain heading toward him like a flaming ICBM. And the fire is black, what? Tran tries to figure that one out as he raises his arms to intercept the blow, and it's completely adorable how he thinks it'll make any bit of difference at all. Kain's foot slams into and through Tran's guard, blasting him backward, causing him to tumble to a stop in a small, smoking heap some distance away.

And yet within Tran, the fight still burns! Or maybe that's just a lung that's caught on fire, who knows. Either way, he's quick to get up, despite the incredible pain, and more than willing to continue. "Take this!" Swinging his arm wide, Tran sends a wide, thin blade of his chi streaking forward toward Kain, accompanied by a hope and a prayer.

Kain's not just going to leave Tran to rest. Or smoulder, as the case may be. He's already following before the doctor finally comes to a halt. Kain pays little attention to the blade of chi, swatting it aside easily with one hand. There is a very brief moment there where Kain's attention is diverted away from Tran himself, but it remains to be seen if Tran can take advantage of it.
Because it doesn't slow Kain down for long. A moment later and he's right in front of Tran, right fist swinging out toward the center of the doctor's face. Blue energy, raw chi power, swirls around his hand as he attempts to slam a punch right into Tran's nose.

Short answer: no. Long answer: no, Dr. Tran cannot take advantage of anything that is currently presenting itself. While he's all set up to unleash all the steam he can, right in Kain's face, well...the truth of the matter is that the other man's just too fast for him in this case. The doctor was hoping that he'd at least, y'know, be slowed down by the slash of energy, but alas, this doesn't seem to be the case.

Once again, Tran is sent flying back from the force of the impact, skidding on the stone. The med team looks just about ready to rush onto the stage, but then Tran starts to get up. He's still got some fight left in him...for the moment. It's just...taking a minute to show itself. Honest.

It does certainly look like Tran will be needing the services of the medical team soon. Perhaps Kain can help make things easier for everyone. Well, everyone except Tran. Kain is fast on his feet, and with Tran getting knocked around it's not hard for Heinlein to be in position to attack again just as Tran is getting up.
Having closed in on Tran, Kain snaps out a quick kick to the doctor's stomach, trying to send him crashing back in the direction of the waiting medical team. It'll be faster if they don't have to rush out to collect him, right? The small explosion of blue chi serves to help make sure Tran will have enough momentum.

Blammo. Before he's even made it up onto his feet, Dr. Tran gets another charged beatdown, once again ending up on the wrong end of Kain's foot. It does pretty much exactly what it was intended to, bodily lifting Tran up and sending him flying toward the medical team. Even though he can feel himself losing conciousness, Tran twists in midair, and then performs the attack he aborted just moments ago, spiralling his arms as fast as he can to send a barrage of steamy slashes flying back where he came from. Then the medical team catches him.

And god damn if they aren't like a pit crew. It takes only a few moments for them to apply some salve, bandage a couple of things, and then jam a needle into his neck to wake him back up and give him a new breath of life. "Hooooooooooly crap!" Tran's wide awake after that one, and looking pretty...well, not good, exactly, but awake. Alert. Prepared, as he starts to move back in on Kain.

Given that Tran needs some time with the medical crew, Kain doesn't press the attack right away. Instead he remains in one spot, watching the waves of steam come shooting towards him. Once they actually reach him, a combination of some fancy footwork and leaning from side to side allows Kain to smoothly slip right through the blasts. Perhaps it would have been more difficult if Tran had launched them under more ideal circumstances.
Once Tran is back up, though, Kain doesn't waste any time. Both of his hands burst into flame, and once more it's that eerie black fire. A quick dash moves Kain toward Tran in a black and white blur. Once he's closed in, Kain thrusts out both hands, one to either side of the doctor but not touching him. The flames flicker for a moment, and then the space between Kain's hands becomes engulfed in a raging black inferno.

Maybe it's the potent chemical cocktail that just got slipped through Tran's veins, but you know what? The doctor's feeling...kind of invincible. Kind of great! When Kain comes at him, the doctor doesn't stop. He just moves forward and DOES IT.

Except wait, wait, wait. He's not actually invincible at all. Thus, when Kain essentially lights Tran on fire, well..."OH MY GOD IT BURNS!" Tran spends a moment screaming as his coat is more or less completely incinerated, along with his shirt and whatever was in his pockets.

When the fire fades, Tran is still there, in all of his bare-chested glory (which is to say, not much), looking comically blackened and a little stunned. It takes a moment or two for him to recover himself, at which point he screams again, moving toward Kain in an attempt to tackle him, pin him, and then punch his face with a flurry of chi blasts until candy comes out. He might have to punch for a while.

Once again Kain makes little effort to move from the spot upon which he is standing. Tran's attempt at a tackle is held off with one firmly placed arm, and the punches are held off by the same limb. No candy comes out, but Kain's arm does start to become a bit sore after a few moments of holding off the flurry of punches. He'll have to do something about that.
Heinlein reaches out with his free arm, attempting to place his hand on Tran's chest. The fact that he doesn't attempt to actually hit the doctor should probably be worrisome. And that is because a moment later a gout of black fire explodes from Kain's hand with enough force to send Tran crashing back along the floor.

Oh, Kain. You're such a kidder. Despite the apparent ease with which Heinlein is blocking his attacks, Tran knows he must be doing something! These are punches, and they're hitting him, even if they're not hitting him good! Tran keeps at it, with more exclamation points than ever before!

Until Kain grabs him and explodes him, at least. The medical team gets ready to intercept the doctor, but miraculously, he manages to flip in midair and land on his feet before reaching them. He's quite unsteady on his feet, however, looking like he can barely stand. "Alright, Kain!" Tran holds an arm straight up into the air, steam suddenly blasting forth from it. After a moment, Tran closes his hand into a fist, and all the loose wisps of energy crash inward, condensing into a white, roiling ball of energy that conceals the doctor's flesh. "HERE I COME!" Tran breaks into a run, and then swings with all of his might, in a massive uppercut that detonates on impact. His other fist comes around soon afterward, encapsulated by a similar ball of steam, a straight punch to hopefully send Kain flying backward. It's Dr. Tran's ultimate attack, the inescapable finishing blow!

How much you wanna bet he'll end up using it at least three more times?

The uppercut is met by Kain's own fist swinging downward. The explosion still engulfs Kain's head, however, and for a moment it looks like Tran's second punch will connect. But then, as the explosion clears, Kain's hand can be seen clutching Tran's fist, having stopped the punch before it could reach Heinlein's face.
Kain doesn't release his grip on Tran's hand, though, not unless Tran succeeds in breaking free. Heinlein yanks bank, attempting to throw Tran off balance, then suddenly thrusts his hand forward to drive Tran's own fist into his face, accompanied by a blast of blue chi. But at least he doesn't tell Tran to stop hitting himself.

Well maybe he should tell Tran just that, since evidently the doctor is having distinct difficulties in that regard! After his 1-2 punch combo lands home (sort of), Dr. Tran is a little, well. He's a lot off-guard, really. Kain will find that Tran, despite trying to yank himself free, is more or less completely unable to do so, and as a result gets smacked in the face with his own hand.

Tran staggers a step, then shouts at the top of his lungs, "You dick!" That wasn't cool. That wasn't cool at all! Still, it seems Tran can't actually do anything about it, as he wavers, then collapses onto his hands and knees in front of Kain.

Or maybe he can, as the buildup of chi is rather obvious underneath him. Steam starts rising in a circle around the doctor, and presently a geyser blasts forth, having the combined effect of being all up in Kain's grill, and simultaneously blasting Tran up, backward, and into the loving hands of the medical team.

They do their thing with that remarkable efficiency they possess, and momentarily Tran is back up and ready for round 3, albeit looking sort of...confused. This can't be good for his health. Or his rationality think smart good powers.

As the geyser of steam blasts out, Kain simply holds up one hand toward it. When the steam washes over him, it's met with a wall of black flame, the two attacks clashing against one another and then blasting apart, doing little beyond ruffling Kain's hair slightly. And once again Kain waits for Tran to get back up from his dealings with the medical crew. It would really look bad if Kain were to blow them up along with Tran, right?
Kain doesn't just waste that time, though. He holds up his right hand and a spark of golden light appears there, forming into a small orb of chi. Once Tran is back on his fight Kain thrusts his hand out in the doctor's direction and that orb of chi suddenly begins to grow in size, expanding to over five feet in diameter as it leaps forth toward Tran. It zig and zags crazily through the air as it shoots toward the doctor, but still gets closer and closer... until it suddenly explodes in a massive golden blast.

Sweet mother of god, that thing is sort of huge. Dr. Tran takes a hesitant step forward toward the giant, golden ball of light, reaching forward hesitantly with one hand. Luckily, he comes to his senses a moment later, just in time to scream "HOLY SH-" Then it explodes.
It becomes quickly evident that Dr. Tran does, occasionally, have the presence of mind to do more than scream like a scared little girl in the face of Kain's implacable assaults, as he's still standing there afterward, not /too/ badly injured. A rather large amount of steam is rising off him, however.

"Whew..." Tran sighs in relief, glad that actually worked. He's not too keen to go charging back in toward Kain just yet, though. "S...s...so, what's the matter, big guy, that all you got?" Bravado: last resort of the Tran.

Well, sooner or later Tran would have to start getting a bit used to Kain's attacks. This just makes things more interesting for Heinlein. He watches as Tran holds off the assault with his steam and gives a brief, approving nod. As for Tran's question, though... "Of course not."
Black flames spring into Kain's hands once more and with a quick flick of both wrists he sends a pair of fireballs racing toward Tran. Nothing too fancy... The medics can probably keep Tran on his feet for a while yet, and even for Kain it could be risky to overextend himself. Still, he remains in pretty good shape thus far.

"Good. I'm glad. Fine." Taking a deep breath afterward, Tran readies himself for Kain's assault, raising his hands. Is he going to try to reflect it!? No! He's going to charge right goddamn through it! Lowering his head, Tran straight up running headbutts Kain's flame. It sounded like a better idea than it was in his head, as the mere force is enough to knock Tran back up to a standing position, almost, but not quite, bowling him over backwards.

Shaking his head quickly in a futile attempt to clear it, the doctor doesn't elect to resume his charge, instead forming an X over his chest with his arms, and then slashing downward, sending a steamy slashing reflection of the shape shooting forward toward Kain.

Kain takes several steps toward Tran immediately after launching his flames, intending to take advantage of any opening made by the blast. He wasn't quite expecting Tran to try just charging right on through them, though. It only takes a moment for Kain to adjust to the new situation, though.
With Tran hanging back, Kain resumes his approach once more. The X shaped blast doesn't appear to worry him, as he only picks up speed. Kain leaps toward Tran, lashing out with his right leg in a jumping kick aimed at the doctor's chest. Black flame engulfs his leg and trails behind him, and that same fire blasts right through the steam Tran attacked with. It's not completely ineffective, though... Part of the steam blast crosses over Kain's cheek, leaving a red line where the skin is scalded.

Joy of joys. Dr. Tran managed to minorly inconvenience Kain. Break out the champagne, boys, we're havin' a victory party! Right after Tran stops hallucinating about having alchohol, a posse, and a cheap hotel room to trash.

This time, when the doctor goes down, he doesn't quite manage to get up to his feet quite so quickly. Rather, he makes it up to one foot, a knee, and a fist, at least before he charges into the fray again. Not bothering with his dramatic buildup of before, Tran summons a globe of tightly packed steam chi and rushes forward, staggering, before leaping up and swinging a one-handed smash downward toward Kain, trying to punch him right in his smug face. Hit or miss, the chi will get away from Tran, and the explosion once again blasts him backward toward the medical team. They do their magic healing routine far faster than anyone has a right to, and once again, Dr. Tran stands tall and ready to fight, despite being bruised, bloody, burnt, and suffering from what he will no doubt later suspect to be a concussion.

Not even Kain can keep this up forever. Tran may be having trouble getting clean hits in, but Heinlein is still slowly getting worn down. It just remains to be seen whether Heinlein or the medical team's skills can hold out longer. For now Tran's fist smashes into Kain's arm once more, forcing Heinlein to take a step backward but failing to break through his guard. Steam rises from the point of impact as Kain slowly lowers his arm, watching Tran get patched up and sent back into the fray.
Once that's taken care of, Kain moves in with the intention of sending him right back. He dashes up to Tran, right arm drawing back as he closes in. He comes to a halt right in front of the doctor, then swings his fist from the side and at an upward angle, aiming to drive an explosive punch in right beneath Tran's ribcage.

Crossing his arms beneath him, Tran locks them in so that they absorb the full force of the punch, which still knocks him up into the air a ways. Could have been worse, and now Dr. Tran's in a premier position to punish his precocious foe!

Angling himself so that he lands on all fours like a runner preparing for a sprint, Tran pauses and then dashes forward at Kain, once again attempting to tackle him and then punch the shit out of him with explosions!

And it seems Kain did exactly what he'd warned himself not to do... He overextended himself. It takes a moment for him to recover from that punch, and Tran takes advantage of that opening. Kain gets tackled to the ground, and then his face takes a beating from Tran's action packed fists. One particularly solid blow splits open a gash in Kain's lower lip, drawing blood... but aside from that, Kain seems to weather the assault rather well, sadly enough for Tran.
Finally Kain manages to recover his waits enough to act. His hand shoots upward, erupting into black flame as Kain attempts to grab hold of Tran's throat. He squeezes tightly for a moment, then wrenches his arm to the side in an attempt to hurl Tran off of him.

The satisfaction that Tran feels as he finally gets through and punches the snot out of Kain is short lived. He sees the flame-cloaked hand coming up toward him, and his natural reaction is to bring his hand up in front of it, interposing a disc of chi to keep it away from him. Unfortunately, both hands are still extended from assorted acts of punchery. When Kain grabs the doctor's throat and starts to crush it like an insignificant bug underneath one's heel, it brings to mind an old, Sumatran saying, a sort of metaphor on life. 'Oh god you're choking me to death'.

And then, thankfully, Tran's tossed to the side like a bag of garbage, where he lies for a moment, coughing, struggling to get back up onto his feet.

Kain, meanwhile, gets back to his feet with relatively little trouble, though he does pause briefly to wipe some blood away from his mouth. This hardly slows him down for long, though, and a moment later he's once more walking toward Tran. The fact that he hasn't gotten back up yet doesn't matter to Kain. He can see that Tran is still /capable/ of getting up again without needing another working over from the medics, and that's good enough for him.
Kain's foot swings back as he draws into range, then he lashes out with a simple and straightforward kick to Tran's chest. Blue chi surrounds his foot, but this time it doesn't explode... It's simply there to enhance the kick in a simpler manner. By making it hit with a lot more force.

And yet when Kain's kick goes smashing toward Tran, he's there one moment, and then gone the next. Falling onto his side, the attack brushes by his ribs, making them tingle but causing no real harm. And of course, this gives Dr. Tran a unique opportunity.

Ignoring the pain he still feels, despite the chemical cocktail in his bloodstream and excellent medical care he's received, Tran starts to go into motion. Building up gross amounts of chi once again, Tran slams his fist into the ground, and with a roar, swings around, simultaneously rising to his feet and delivering another steam-packing uppercut toward Kain, followed by another explosive straight!

Kain has had to hold off Tran's repeated assaults for quite some time now... And finally Tran's persistance pays off. Kain is just a moment too slow in reacting, allowing Tran's exploding uppercut to slam into his jaw. Kain's head jerks back as he's lifted off his feet and then Tran's follow up punch strikes home. Heinlein is sent sailing back across the arena, bounces once when he hits the ground, then manages to twist himself as he rolls so that he finally ends up in a crouching position. That's gotta be good for Tran's morale.
Despite all that, Kain doesn't appear particularly upset. He simply stands back up, cracking his neck once as he does so. Kain is a fan of persistance, and this is precisely why. If you just keep going, you can accomplish some pretty amazing things. Of course, that doesn't mean he isn't going to try and put a stop to Tran before he can turn things around in totally awesome fashion. Kain quickly crosses the arena once more, leaping toward Tran and lashing out with a sweeping kick aimed at the side of the doctor's ahead.

Good, nothing. Hell, it feels great! Finally, Dr. Tran manages to get a real, good, solid hit in on Kain. That alone pretty much makes this all worth it - seeing how he's managed to deal a hefty chunk of hurting down on Kain. Maybe a little too good, because once again, Tran gets overconfident. Kain's foot comes crashing into Tran's temple with a meaty thwack, more or less toppling him directly down onto the ground. He sits there for a moment, not moving at Kain's feet, until slowly, one hand comes up...and slaps down, leading to another geyser erupting all around Tran, knocking him up and sort of back.

This time, the medical crew has to rush forward to get him, and honestly, even after they're done, Tran doesn't look so good. Maybe it's because his entire upper body is pretty much a solid mass of bruised flesh.

If Kain had had any intentions of going easy on Tran, now would be the time to discard them. He manages to hold off most of the steam with a blast of flame, but some of it still manages to get through to him. The damage is minor, but every little bit counts at this point, where a little bit of damage can determine whether or not you can bring up a successful guard.
This time Kain doesn't advance on Tran. Instead he thrusts his hand up into the air, where another spark of golden light appears in the palm of his hand. A moment later he thrusts his hand down toward the floor and the spark flares up and vanishes. An attention grabbing movement, though anybody who's seen it before knows better than to be watching Kain... Above Tran's head a swirling cloud of pure chi energy has formed, and a moment later it blasts down with a beam which bores a hole right into the arena floor, centered on the spot where Tran is currently standing.

COMBATSYS: Tran fails to reflect Himmlischer Atem from Kain with Dr. Tran Doles Out the Harshness.

Tran             1/--=====/=======|===----\-------\0             Kain

Dr. Tran's seen this before. Not in person, he doesn't think, but on TV, at least. A giant goddamn pillar of chi. The doctor's options are limited, and he has only a few precious moments to figure out what to do, how he's going to deal with this. It's too bad that at this point, he's not exactly thinking very well. He's really barely thinking at all - it's mostly just a haze at this point.

So it is that he attempts the impossible, smashing one palm flat on the ground in front of him, conjuring a geyser of steam to blast upward, intercept the energy bombardment, redirect it. Unfortunately, this has several flaws. First, Tran's still right there. He's not covered by his attempted reflect or anything, and there's a lot of chi blasting down on him. It's not like he has a chi umbrella. Second, OH MY GOD IT BURNS WHY GOD WHY

Suffice to say, when the chi is done RAPING THE CRAP out of Tran, he's down, twitching, but slowly getting to his feet. Can he turn one percent into one hundred!?

Not if Kain has anything to say about it. He's certainly impressed by Tran's performance, but it's about time for the show to be over. He stands back up slowly after blasting a crater into the arena floor. Making Geese pay for these repairs is a small pleasure. It's not like it's really any big deal to someone of Geese's wealth, but neither is it much of a bother for Kain to do that kind of damage. And after a moment it becomes clear that Tran is still moving.
Kain holds out his right hand and a ball of black flame begins dancing above his palm. A moment later it splits into two flaming spheres which begin spiralling around one another in the space above Kain's hand. He sweeps his arm in the direction of the fallen Tran, sending both dark fireballs racing toward our plucky young hero.

COMBATSYS: Kain successfully hits Tran with Schwarze Flame.

It's right about now that Dr. Tran one again does something completely retarded. It's with blurred vision that he sees Kain's massive balls descending upon him, and at this point, out of his mind with pain, drugs, and the spirit of rock and roll, Dr. Tran charges. With one last burst of strength, he plows into the chi, staggering backward once it hits him, deterred but not stopped.

And then the doctor just keeps rushing, fists raised, to give Kain a final one-two combo finish exploding punch attack before he just collapses on his face. The med team is quick to hurry out, although this time when they get to him, they're going to declare game over. They've done what they could, but Tran just isn't getting up again, at least not without cyborg enhancements, more drugs, and perhaps a ghost to possess his unconcious body.

COMBATSYS: Tran can no longer fight.

COMBATSYS: Kain blocks Tran's Here Comes Dr. Tran.

Kain is pretty worn down... But Tran is in even worse shape. So Heinlein is once more able to fend off the reckless assault from the good doctor. This final steam blast is actually enough to shred open the sleeves of Kain's jacket, though, leaving steam rising from the flesh beneath as Tran finally falls over.
When it becomes apparent that the medical team has finally reached their limits Kain takes a deep breath and allows himself to relax for a moment. Then he begins walking over toward Tran. Is he planning to finish the job? Is this the end for Dr. Tran!?
Kain leans over the fallen doctor, observing him for a moment. He then reaches into his pocket and pulls something out before turning to one of the paramedics. "Give this to him when he comes to. Tell him it's for an inspiring performance." And then he drops a set of car keys into the paramedic's hand. Keys to a custom built Italian sports car that Kain drove to the fight this evening. He really is impressed by Tran's persistance, and Kain likes to encourage strength in people. And although the thought of keeping them for himself briefly crosses the paramedic's mind when he sees the logo on the keys, he then looks at Tran. And looks at Kain. ...And there's no way in hell this guy is gonna risk pissing Kain off.

COMBATSYS: Kain has ended the fight here.
