Ayers Rock. It's big. It's red. It stands out, in the middle of nowhere. It's otherwise not *really* all that interesting. But at least it provides plenty of space to run around in, provides a good solid base for the feet to stand on, and falling off the edge is almost as dramatic as plummeting off of Geese Tower. It'll do.
But the real reason that Mai chose Australia as the location is because of the warm sunshine. In Japan, it's cold and rainy. She's tired of that. She wants spring to come again. In Australia, however, it's reaching the tail end of summer. The sun is warm, the sky is blue and cloudless, and there's just the slightest bit of a breeze rippling through her ponytail. Yeah. That's what SHE'S talking about! "So! Ready to do this thing?" You copycat ninja!
Ayers Rock is a great place for a fight, whether it's because of the size of the rock or because you don't want kangaroos interfering with your battle. In this case, two female fighters in red, looking very similar in terms of outfits, are preparing for a battle here. One is Mai Shiranui, one of the best female ninjas in the world. The other is Maki Genryusai, a blonde haired woman who wears a similar outfit to Mai's, except instead of wearing the ninja-style footwear Mai has on, she's wearing red sneakers and white socks.
Maki finishes limbering up and tightens the laces on her sneakers and then turns to face her opponent. She bows respectfully and then says to Mai, "I'm ready whenever you are! Don't hold back!" She smirks with confidence.

Mai grins. She moves onto the balls of her feet, flicking a pair of fans into her fingers with one quick movement of the wrist. "Ohhhhh, don't worry about THAT! I've been warming up for this!" she reassures her opponent. Thanks to a savage owning from Iori, Mai is definitely ready to cut loose.
And so she does, pirouetting swiftly and snapping one of the fans towards her opponent. The other remains snapped shut, tapping against a jutted hip as she gauges Maki's reaction.

The Kachou-Sen comes at Maki, a signature attack of Mai's, and Maki simply tries to step out of the way of the flying fan, but she mistimes it a little too slowly, and she ends up taking the hit in the side. It doesn't hurt too much, but it's more than enough to bring Maki to grips with the fact that Mai is definitely a formidable foe. Does that make Maki scared? Of course not!
"Not bad for a first strike. Looks like this is going to be fun," Maki says as she launches herself into the air and attempts to deliver a flying kick aimed right at Mai!

Mai spins to the right, opting not to say anything further. Maki's fast, but speed is the name of the game when Mai's in the 'ring.' As the blonde sails past her, Mai bends at the knees and pounces! Fingers outstretched, she reaches for the back of Maki's gi, her grip tightening before she rolls and tosses the lightweight overhead.

Looks like Maki mistimed that attack, and she finds herself caught in the grip of Mai, silently cursing herself for not wearing tighter clothes (wait, she's not here for fanservice, so scratch that!) But she keeps her eyes open for the right opportunity, and as soon as Mai releases her into the air, Maki does a quick somersault and manages to land on her feet. She's a little off-balance, but otherwise not as hurt as she thought she'd be. Not stopping for words, Maki drops to one hand and spins around on it with her foot extended, while yelling 'Bushin Senpuu Kyaku!'

"Ack!" Startled at the sudden yell (so THAT'S why they do it...), Mai hesitates, and it proves to be her misfortune. She's knocked clean off her feet and hits the ground hard. Ooooo, her hip...! That'll leave a bruise! The redhead frowns, resisting the urge to rub it as she rolls to her feet, narrowing her eyes. Her pride hurts more than her legs or her hip, though. In fact, it fairly smoulders.
The kunoichi somersaults forward, rising to her feet and slamming her elbow towards Maki's chest.

That attack is aimed right at a spot of Maki that really shouldn't be discussed at this time, but now's not the time for that. Maki attempts to stance herself to take the blow without getting hurt too much, but she's off in her timing again, and she's knocked backwards a little, causing her to stagger and have to catch her breath. For a moment she's a little dizzied but then she recovers.
Again no need for any words. Maki simply takes advantage of the ninja's close proximity after her attack finished and prepares to deliver a hard strike aimed right at the ninja. (Not any bad spots mind you, more like the stomach maybe.)

Mai simply...isn't there. The girl is definitely fast on her feet, and Maki's fist cleaves through a fluttering scrap of cloth flung up as Mai evaded the punch. But where is she now?
The sudden heatwave behind Maki should serve as answer enough, as well as ample warning. The Shiranui clan's flames are not quite as famous as the Kusonagis. But they're plenty formidable nonetheless. Mai holds herself still, head bowed, her slender fingers laced together with pointers steepled. Three gouts of flames erupt from the ground and surround Mai and Mai and...and Mai?! Three of them! The ones of the left and right mirror the center's actions as they revolve, aiming to crash into Maki and drive her back.

The heat sends Maki into reality as she realizes the attack missed, and she turns to see Mai preparing her next attack. Maki decides to employ a little strategy and tried striking Mai while she's vulnerable. Nothing fancy, just a simple medium strike. Big mistake.
The attack is mistimed, and Maki finds herself getting a bit hot under the collar. She rolls around briefly to put the flames out, and then she looks a bit angry, looking like she's probably smack someone if they made a joke about feeling hot under the collar!
Worry not, dear Maki! Mai's sense of humor is not nearly that lame! The two mirages fade...and it turns out that the one in the center was one of the mirages. Ohhh, that devilish ninja and her deceptive tricks! Not a moment is wasted as Mai lifts her head, opening her eyes and looking quite smug. Woo, it worked! A fan appears in her hand, extending with a sharp snap, before she sends it fluttering towards Maki. Perhaps it will help to cool her down, oh ho ho ho!

Cool Maki down? Oh, but she's already cooled off already, and she proves that to Mai by sidestepping the thrown fan with a little more ease this time. A half smirk forms on the blonde woman's face as she looks to Mai and says, "You missed me!"
At that, though, Maki dashes towards Mai, but she's barely gone to the halfway mark between where she was standing and where Mai is that she leaps into the air and then literally flies towards Mai with her foot extended at the woman, while yelling, "Bushin Gokusaken!"

She can counter this. It shouldn't be a problem! A flaming flip-kick into the air while the attack is yelled, Mai avoids injury, and looks awesome. It's the perfect plan!
So what went wrong? D:
Mai isn't quite sure, to be honest. She finds herself reeling, with a face full of foot, and her head ringing with the impact of the blow. Perhaps...perhaps she should have practiced that move a little more...
Well, we all make mistakes, and they're meant to help us learn. Unfortunately, in a situation like this, they can also leave us vulnerable to attacks, as is the situation here with Mai being taken down by Maki's attack which she failed to properly counter, now leaving her vulnerable to attack.
Maki casually strides over to where Mai is standing, still dazed from the attack obviously, and decides to demonstrate a throwing technique of her own. She grabs the woman by the shoulders and attempts to fall down on her back and throw Mai backwards while thrusting her foot upwards (kind of like Ryu's throw technique!)

Casually strides?! Now that's just insulting. A dainty little growl sounds from between Mai's tightly-clenched teeth as she tucks herself into a ball, drawing her knees to her chest to block the foot aimed for her stomach. The impact against the ground is softened as Mai rolls to her feet, a fan lightly clenched between her teeth with two more clutched in her hands. It's a good thing the lecture wasn't verbally spoken, otherwise Mai would be a /lot/ angrier right now. And though the kunoichi is usually carefree and fun in her fights, she can also be vicious if the right buttons are pushed. "Hyah!" she barks, and hurls the fans at Maki one after another in rapid succession.

It's almost like a machine gun flurry of fans coming at Maki, and despite her best efforts to take the blows, it's just not enough, and she finds herself getting pelted left and right with the fans, which really hurts quite a bit. Maki's now bleeding a little and rather bruised, but she's not out of this fight just yet.
Nonetheless, she finds a nearby object to lean against to regain her stance and takes a moment to focus herself mentally.

No attack? That's fine by Mai. She's still bristling internally, and has no qualms about relentlessly pursuing the offensive. Her grandfather would most certainly chide her for losing her temper, and give a long blathering speech about staying cool and in control of your emotions. But he's not here, nyah nyah! Old fart would probably pop a blood vessel watching the two ninja girls go at it in the first six seconds of the fight anyhow. She makes a beeline for Maki, pulling back her elbow and slamming an open palm strike at her opponent's chest, just below the collarbone.

Having a clear mind really makes a difference in a fight like this, and Maki uses that to her advantage to move out of the way of Mai's strike that was aimed right at a rather sensitive spot. She makes it seem so simple, but there's a lot to it than what it seems like. But now is not the time for dwelling on something like that. Now is the time to take advantage of the situation.
As soon as Mai has turned around, Maki rushes at her, yelling, "Bushin Gou Rai Ha!" And then going into a lightning fast combination attack sequence that involves a bit of punches and kicks thrown in a sequence that's rather fast.

Mai backpedals, twisting and weaving, raising her arms to deflect the flurry of blows as best she can. But the use of all that chi seems to have worn her down. She doesn't seem to be fast enough. Darn it! This is so frustrating!
Finally Mai leaps into the air, burning the last reserves of her chi. She's not going to make it, and she knows that. So all she can do now is focus all her strength into one last fiery charge, and hope that, at the very least, it looks good on camera. She plummets downward, flames surrounding her as she makes her final impact.

Maki steps out of the way of Mai's last ditch effort, and watches as she hits the ground. You'd think that after winning the fight, Maki would probably make her victory pose and quote, but she's not like that in all cases. The other fighter fought well, and Maki wishes to acknowledge that.
Maki walks over to where Mai is on the ground, and extends a hand to help her up, saying, "You fought very well, and I admire your fighting spirit in that even though you were down and out, you still gave it all you had."
Mai does not smile. She accepts the hand up, and turns her head to regard Maki out of the corner of her eyes. There's something about her words that just...rubs Mai the wrong way. 'Even though she was down and out'? Rrrrrrrrrgh! No, calm down, calm down, she tells herself (somewhat ineffectually). She probably doesn't mean to sound arrogant. She bites the inside of her cheek, momentarily swallows her pride, and forces a smile. "Heh, thanks. Guess I'm a little rusty." Too much time wondering where Andy had disappeared to, too much time trying to FIND where Andy had disappeared to. Not enough time spent practicing like she should have. "Good luck in your next round." Ooooo, it prickles to say it!
