Tournament Announcement: Southtown Medal Tournament -- Wed Oct 26 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, you know what they say. Go out with a bang...
In the next few weeks, fliers and announcements will go out through all the usual channels for a two-week event sponsored by the Kanzuki Corporation, the "Southtown Medal Tournament". The advertisement calls for all fighters to show their stuff, with the promise of the winner's "wildest dreams come true*" (fine print on that is both extensive and incomprehensible, but boils down to 'the corp buys you something awesome within limits' if triple-checked with a lawyer). Directions simply say to visit the local Kanzuki office, with appropriate contact information.
Every competitor who signs up (OOC: @mail Karin) is given two small gold "medals" (actually little pins) with a stylized fist on them, as well as a rules packet with the the following rules:
1.) You may only challenge other medal holders. However, you can challenge any medal holder you like. Challengers must wear at least one medal prominently for the entire two-week run of the tournament.
2.) You must have at least one medal to challenge someone. When you have lost all of your medals, you are considered 'out of the tournament'.
3.) All fights are to be 1v1 between medal holders. Fights should be conducted in public places. Kanzuki media staff will take care of all recording through their super-secret ninja ways (OOC: to assume the tourney is free-wheeling, as it should be, no need to pose camera crews or arrange times with the corp or whatever).
4.) The loser of the fight gives up one medal to the winner. In the devent of a Draw Match, no medals are exchanged.
5.) Only sanctioned medal bouts will be recognized. (OOC: All fights must be logged and posted, and Karin @mail-ed with results, otherwise they do NOT COUNT. Otherwise medal tracking would be a nightmare.)
6.) Fighters are free to challenge other medal holders as they wish, but "bullies" do not fit the Kanzuki model of sportsmanship and the corporation reserves the right to revoke participation at any time for any reason. (OOC: High ratios, don't cherrypick or bully just to win medals. You WILL be disqualified if you do. However, if a lower ratio person obviously challenges someone higher, that isn't considered "bullying".)
7.) No outside interference in matches will be allowed. (OOC: Dirty fighters beware. The corporation *is* watching every bout; if you get too nasty, you will be disqualified!)
8.) Have fun! Show your martial spirit and fight for your dream prize!
A larger warning is posted below in large type: "Any fighter may only challenge a particular individual *once every 24 hours*. The exception is double knockouts; they may opt for a rematch later that day at their own discretion." (OOC: Do not spam-fight for medals. Keep it reasonable.)
Signups are accepted at Kanzuki offices until 11:59pm local time (OOC: MUD time), October 30th. The tournament will run for a period of two weeks, starting October 31st and ending November 13th at 11:59pm. At that point, the top three medal holders will participate in a no-holds-barred free-for-all. The last one standing is the winner!
OOC: I know this time frame seems kind of short, but it's just supposed to be a fun thing while I have a slight break in my berserk workload for the semester. Please get your signups in soon. I'll make a post when the tourney "starts", and then... go nuts. Every few days I'll post standings of the top 10 or so medal holders for your viewing pleasure.
Questions, talk to Karin (or bug Rose if Karin's not on). Enjoy!

Medal Tourney Clarifications -- Thu Oct 27 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some things came up I thought people might want to know.
1.) Yes, you really do need to @mail me to sign up (see 14/11). I realize it got buried in there and that's my fault, mea maxima culpa. But yeah, you have until the end of the day on Sunday the 30th to sign up.
2.) You can enter any and all of your alts if you wish (except SCs, unless you... LIKE pain, at which case feel free, I suppose). If two of your alts make it to the final, well... we'll work something out. But don't let that stop you!
NOW SIGN UP, DAMNIT. ^_^

Medal Tourney Reminder -- Sun Oct 30 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a reminder to read 14/10 and 14/11, and that the last day to sign up for the tournament is today (Sunday Oct 30th) before midnight. Please use @mail, don't assume you sent a page or whatever and I saw it, because in usual OOC room spam I see nothing and hear nothing.
Please sign up if you haven't ^_^. There's a wide ratio range among the competitors thusfar so everyone will have some competition. Thanks.

Medal Tourney: START! -- Sun Oct 30 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay! Let the Southtown Medal Tourney commence!
Kobun was kind enough to code us up a quick code thing for us, so you're in luck there.
1.) 'medals' shows all the participants in the tournament, as well as his/her ranking thus far.
2.) 'medals/history' shows an annotated list of wins and losses.
Also, I thought it over and realized, with the fickle CSYS, 2 medals to start isn't a lot. Thus everyone starts out with 4. The code will tell you 2, because I wasn't on today to tell Kobun the decision (which I made this evening). Hopefully we'll have that fixed shortly. But for now, just assume you have 4 medals. Remember, when you lose them all, that's it, so wager carefully and fight well. ^_^
REMEMBER: For fights to be 'official', there *must* be a log, preferrably via the auto-logger. I'll update standings as I see the logs, so please follow the SNF model and have the winner @mail Karin the results and where the log is. Also, please note who the *CHALLENGER* (the person who 'bet' the medal first) was in the @mail. This is important so that if high ratios act the fool and start cherrypicking, we can punish appropriately. If it was a mutual thing with no clear challenger, that's fine, just be sure to mention that.
You have from this posting until 11:59pm on November 13th (two weeks) to finish your fights. A 3-way free-for-all will follow between the top three medal holders to determine first, second, and third places.
Good luck! Check the next post for a rules summary.

Medal Tourney Rules Summary -- Sun Oct 30 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the Southtown Medal Tournament, sponsored by Kanzuki Industries.
The detailed rules are in 14/10, but let me make a quick recap of them for you.
1.) In a medal fight, two registered fighters 'wager' one medal each. You must have at least one medal to challenge. The winner takes the loser's wagered medal. When you're out of medals, you can no longer participate. All fights must be in public spaces in Southtown.
2.) You may only fight the same person once ever 24 hours. EXCEPTION: If there's a draw, you MAY opt for a rematch later (you aren't obligated to). Draws result in no medal loss on either side.
3.) All bouts are 1 on 1. Interference in fights is noted and the offending parties immediately disqualified (and their medals possibly distributed as the Kanzuki corp sees fit!).
4.) Medal tourney fighters must 'wear' one medal (ICly) to be clear to others. Obviously, only matches in which a declaration of medal wager has been made 'count' (so you can have normal fights against other tourney folk without losing medals, natch). Use the 'medals' command to see standings, and also the participant list.
5.) ALL FIGHTS MUST BE LOGGED TO COUNT, preferrably via autologger. When done, @mail Karin the following info:
[*] The location (name, etc., whatever) of the log
[*] Who the challenger was (if it was mutual agreement, just say "Mutual")
[*] Who the winner and loser were
I'll handle the results when I've verified logs, etc.
6.) After the close of the tourney on the 13th, the top three fighters will have a free-for-all to determine who gets the top prize and the 2nd/3rd place prizes.
7.) You may only wager one medal at a time. I thought I made that clear above, and I didn't. So I've edited it to reflect that. Also, you can't just "give away" medals; the corp will find out about it and restore the count (by force if necessary).
Okay! That's it. I hope this tournament is fun for everyone, and good luck in your fights!

Medal Tourney rules clarifications -- Mon Oct 31 2005 -- Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Easier to just make this its own post.
1.) You have the right to refuse a medal fight if you're challenged. That said, refuse too many and the corp is going to reevaluate your desire to participate, and you may be pulled from the roster.
2.) The 24 hour rule applies only to the 'same people'. Example: Charlie challenges Sakura and wins. He can't challenge her again for 24 hours, but Shingo could challenge her right then and there. Of course, see above right of refusal rule.
Get fighting! Have fun. ^_^

On @mails for the Medal Tourney Wed Nov 2 2005 Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Um. I feel compelled to make this post because there's been some sort of miscommunication on my part, I guess, so I want to clarify exactly how this should work, in an ideal world.
You don't need to @mail me immediately when a fight is over, because I won't be marking results until I've *read* the log. And with all the @mail the tournament is generating, the fewer messages I need to sift through and file, the better. ^_^
So, don't @mail until the log is posted for me to look at. Also, remember the challenger (unless it was mutual, which is fine, but please say so in the @mail). That way I will not drown in redundant @mails and everything will get updated as expected.
Thanks. I hope the participants are enjoying themselves. ^_^

Last one, I swear Mon Nov 7 2005 Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In light of the recent logger problems, you can forgo the log part of the match reporting for the medal tourney. If you happen to have a client log I can look at, that'd be nice.
Still, please keep *recording* logs. You just don't need to send me the location in the win report mail.

Medal Tourney Last Day Sun Nov 13 2005 Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay. So I wasn't expecting to sleep until 4pm, and wasn't thinking about this during the wee hours of the morning. So.
I know it's not much, but the official deadline for fights is extended to 'before I go to bed tonight', probably around 2am EST. Any fight that's either reported (PROPERLY reported, published log and all 'cause that's fixed, you know) or started and then properly reported while I sleep (I won't go chasing logs/info tomorrow; if it's not done right I shall simply ignore it) counts.
We shall determine FFA rules and suchlike depending on standings once I get back from class tomorrow evening.
Good luck!

MEDAL TOURNEY BOUTS CLOSED Mon Nov 14 2005 Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just like the subject line says. Bouts are now closed. Participants get to keep their accrued medals (or lack thereof) as a souvenier, to cherish or eBay at their whim. Presumably any future tournaments will have different designs to prevent cheating.
As for the final FFA participants... I'm working on that, since there are ties for first and second and a huge running for third. I want to find something that gives the most people the chance to have something to do, so we'll see what happens. I'll let you know as soon as I have it worked out.
And on that note: Thank you, everyone, for participating. 52 fights total over two weeks! To me that's pretty impressive for what essentially amounted to a garage kit tournament. And hopefully it provided the chance to do some cool stuff with your characters.

Medal Tourney Results Tue Nov 22 2005 Karin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The log is up under the "Kanzuki Corp." section of the logs page. I encourage you to read it, because it was a pretty cool match.
In any event, I want to announce the winners of the Kanzuki Southtown Medal Tournament:
3rd Place (Tie): Shingo Yabuki and Li Xiangfei, at $125,000 apiece. Xiangfei donates half of that ($75,000) to the Metro City Relief Fund.
2nd Place: Chun-li, taking home a $250,000 prize.
Winner: Ryu, who wins the "dream prize" of whatever he wishes, within reason (he has yet to determine what he wants at this point).
Also, Karin makes a highly-publicized award to both Kula Diamond and Mimiru Kasagi for "outstanding participation and initiative, as well as fighting spirit". Each of them is given a reasonable 4-year college scholarship offer on behalf of the Kanzuki Zaibatsu.
And that brings my tourney to a close! Thank you to everyone who participated, and put up with my moodiness and my bossiness. I hope that everyone had fun and maybe got some good RP opportunities out of it to boot. I know I had fun, overall. Good fight, good night!
