Schools Tourney - [T2R1] Kensou vs Kelvin

Description: Kelvin's learned a few new strategies since his last fight against Kensou -- but will they be enough? (Winner: Kensou/Pacific High)

Athletic Field
Justice High's athletic field is nothing so large as Taiyo Dome or so
spacious as Pacific High's beachfront property, but just like everything else
at Justice, it's of the highest quality. There are no football, baseball, or
soccer fields here. Instead, there are tennis courts, strips of concrete for
fencing, racquetball courts, archery ranges, and so on. If it's a sport
enjoyed by the elite, it can be found here.

Whoever planned out the matchups for the school tournament must have a sick
sense of humour; really, putting Sie Kensou up against Kelvin Anderson in the
first round?  Honestly, though...  The Psycho Soldier is just glad he's not up
against Megumi.  So, in the open-air arena set aside for this particular event,
and with all the fanfare expected of being part of the 'second string' tier of
things, the Chinese martial artist iiiiis...  Waiting!  Rather than fighting in
street clothes, or borrowing a Pacific High uniform, Kensou is wearing something
vaguely reminiscent of his usual tournament gear, but with a patch declaring his
temporary allegiance on the back of it.  That's right, Pacific High
administration, you can rest easy...  Kensou is here to kick ass in your name.

Idly, Kensou does some last-minute stretches, shifting from leg to leg as he
limbers up for the coming fight.  It's true that he has a pretty good idea of
what to expect in this, his third matchup with Kelvin, but you never know what
stops the opposition might pull out when it's something more than a friendly
sparring match.  Not to mention, Kensou /does/ have to worry about potentially
sabotaging himself here, in his first tournament since the Psycho Soldiers last
fought together.

If by fanfare, you mean.. ..the seats are nowhere near as filled up as they are
for the 'big kids,' anyway.  There's still some spectators, mostly killing time
until the next major bout, no doubt..but that tends to work in Kelvin's favor,
since even though he's growing used to some attention..for the most part, he's
still somewhat crowd shy.  Just when it looks like he might end up late for the
prescribed match time, he shows up..or rather, he was always there, blending
quite easily into the small crowd at the front of the arena, when someone
happens to recognize him and shake him vigorously.  With a groggy start, his
eyes open halfway, before mostly closing again to their more usual state.
"Huh.. ..it's time already?"  Some pre-fight warm up he has!  As though it were
natural to be caught in this state, he makes his way out of the seating, and a
while later emerges onto the field from a more 'normal' entrance, barely looking
more awake than scant moments before.  There's a bit of cheering as it seems
things are almost ready to get under way, but nothing too uproarous!  The crowd
doesn't know what to expect, perhaps.. ..but Kelvin is well prepared; this will
be the third time he and Kensou have met, and if those two were just 'friendly
practice', then he's really in for it now.  Despite that very heavy realization,
he strides up calmly to Kensou, and after he's done with his stretches, extends
a hand in a show of good sportsmanship.  "This is my last set of clothes like
this," he notes, honestly, but with that dreamy grin on his face, "Try not to
scrape `em up too badly.. ..Kensou."

Let's be fair...  Kensou /does/ have a fan following of his own, even if it
isn't quite as large as some.  But he'll show them, oh yes.  He'll show them
/all/.  Of course, first he has to focus on the task ahead of him!  The Chinese
fighter grins back at Kelvin, and accepts the offered handshake, with perhaps a
bit more vigor than displayed by his friend and opponent; but that's just Sie
for you, a regular bundle of energy, especially when he's pumped up for a fight
like this!  "Hey, hey, don't worry!" he says reassuringly, with a bit of a
chuckle.  "You just focus on tryin' to beat me!"  See, he's being /encouraging/.
He wants Kelvin to give it his best, rather than give in to the urge to nap.
Taking a few steps back from the other Psion at this point, Kensou hops loosely
into his wide-legged fighting stance.  "Now, c'mon, an' get us started!"

COMBATSYS: Kensou has started a fight here.

It's hard for Kelvin to be serious in this, at the moment.. ..Kensou has, of
course, become one of his better acquaintances in town.  When he first heard
about the match, he was actually laughing.  True, it could have been worse..he
might have ended up with Daigo or something.  But, fate just has a way of
bringing certain sets of people together.  He's surprised not to see Horatio
sitting in the stands, for example, as he gives it a sweep of his eyes.  No
family members that he can recognize, good..then things are ready!  "Yeah, no
sense in keeping everyone waiting too long," he agrees, taking a few paces back
to stand opposite of Kensou.  His own 'stance' is much as usual, a slouch into
an even more relaxed posture, arms held loose and seemingly unready, yet..as his
foe is no doubt aware of, they can strike deceptively quickly, when he needs
them to..sometimes.  His eyes fully close for a moment, before opening in his
business mindset, intently concentrating.  It's not quite like he's possessed,
but more like he's tapping into a larger portion of himself, one that most
people can't.  Rather then charge in like he leads most matches, he seems to
take his time, preparing for the moment, and to recall their past two spars.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin has joined the fight here.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin focuses on his next action.

Uh oh, a new strategy!  How on Earth is Kensou supposed to deal with that?  He
could, of course, simply be the one to charge headlong at Kelvin, but he'd
rather let the other fighter have the first attack even if he's going to take
his time.  "C'mon, now.  Don't make me come over there!" the Chinese fighter
taunts good-naturedly, but he too is biding his time at the moment, waiting for
Kelvin to attack and the opening in one's defenses that has a way of
accompanying going on the offense!

COMBATSYS: Kensou focuses on his next action.

Kelvin           0/-------/-------|-------\-------\0           Kensou

Well then, it seems he's left with no choice!  Kelvin is much more a reactive
sort..that's primarily what his style is built around.  Yet, at times like
these, it's either go ahead or lose a potential opening.  It's not so much
Kensou's taunting that brings him forward, but perhaps something he sees and
thinks he can take advantage of.  Not wasting any further time, he opens this
match like it matters; suddenly taking to his feet with all the forward momentum
his small frame can create, he charges in a straight line.  It's true..he's
nowhere near as powerful physically as even the wirey Kensou, but he hopes that
won't matter, as he leaves his feet a few paces away, leaving the ground for a
moment as he gives a half-twist, coming around with a swinging hook of a punch
aimed at the side of his head.  This is perhaps somewhat unusual in that he's
using his off-hand, whereas he usually prefers the right..and he's hoping this
fact can catch Kensou off guard.  It's the crushing swing, that might as well be
considered a sub-signature, with how often he brings it up at times like these.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin successfully hits Kensou with Andersons' Crushing Swing.
- Power hit! -

Kensou wasn't expecting the changeup of hands, no; in fact, this particular
attack by Kelvin is startlingly fast for Kensou, who thusly gets clocked right
in the side of the head.  "Guh!" he says, sagely, staggering a bit as he tries
to get his eyes to focus right again, and make his ear stop ringing.  Still,
he's not even going to let that staggeredness stop him!  In fact, the Psycho
Soldier turns fully around with the force of the punch and then /jumps/ towards
Kelvin, feeling more than anything else the location of the other Psion and
ideally getting into the opening after that nigh-haymaker, his left elbow and
knee extended to strike the other fighter.  "HAAA-!"  What comes next, of
course, is the Ryuu Renga - Chiryuu, as he swings his other knee up, and then
twists around fully to roundhouse Kelvin with his left heel, all in one smooth
motion.  "YAAA!"

COMBATSYS: Kelvin just-defends Kensou's Ryuu Renga!

[\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  < >  /////////////////////////     ]
Kelvin           0/-------/------=|==-----\-------\0           Kensou

Much like Kensou was seemingly able to roll with the punch, and perhaps even add
some of its power to his reply.. ..Kelvin is right there, seemingly right open
with the proximity, and the short time after his attack had left him off
balance.  Landing on one foot, it seems to the crowd that he'll be easy fodder
for the nikuman chomper's lunging kicks, a fact that happens to bring the crowd
alive as some gasp, while others cheer -- it's those darn Kensou supporters!
They are soon silenced, however, as Kelvin somehow spins around on that
foot..just in time to plant his other firmly on the ground, and bring up a hand
to block Kensou's knee, thankfully before he can finish.  He might not be able
to 'sense' Kensou yet, but..so far, it doesn't seem to be affecting his
performance.  In a split second, Kelvin's other hand is reaching out for the
elbow, possibly still poised for an attack that won't be hitting..and with a
switch of momentum, if contact is made, he'll be swinging his friend around in
the direction he came.  So far, it's almost like last time..but will Kelvin's
seeming super-awareness last, or once again putter out?

COMBATSYS: Kelvin successfully hits Kensou with Negative Momentum.

"Wow," says Kensou, as his attack is so thoroughly defended; not that he has too
much more time to be complimentary, as he's rather abruptly heading /backwards/
as Kelvin throws him, skidding along on his heels before ending up on his back.
"Tch..."  If this were another of their usual sparring matches, the Chinese
fighter would probably be complimenting Kelvin on his excellent reaction, but
right now...  Right now, Kensou wants to /win/.  The lively Psycho Soldier hops
back up to his feet, landing with his hands brought up in front of his face,
wrists crossed as he quickly gathers the necessary energy for...  "Choukyuudan!"
Kensou calls, sweeping his arms out as the familiar blue-white sphere forms and
hurtles towards Kelvin!

COMBATSYS: Kensou successfully hits Kelvin with Choukyuu Dan.

[      \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  < >  ////////////////////          ]
Kelvin           0/-------/-======|=====--\-------\0           Kensou

And then, his defense cracks, like Kensou just sat on his carton of eggs.  He's
still too new to all this energy stuff, it seems..his family never chucked it,
and he's still not had much experience in the 'real' world of fighting.
Accordingly, even though his arms were braced for an impact.. ..energy, psycho
power or chi, just doesn't hit like fists or kicks.  It sort of just washes over
his defenses, and essentially unbraced behind, he eats it with practically the
full intended force, getting sent back a step or two..though at least he wasn't
knocked flat of his back.  And.. ..at least his clothes aren't torn up, yet.
Taking a deep breath, as though swallowing a faint grunt of fatigue, Kelvin's
resolve remains intact..for the moment.  This is indeed no time for patting on
the back..it's time for action!  As soon as his vision clears, or as much as it
does with his eyes almost completely closed as they are, he is once again
slicing forward into the wind..and towards Kensou, his feet carrying him close
before he once again leaves the ground.  However, it's not 'the swing.'  This
time, it's the shoulder block that leads into a different attack entirely.
Should it connect solidly enough, his arm will already be moving in to finish
it, clutching Kensou to send him sliding into the ground..or whatever might
happen to be incident in the path.

COMBATSYS: Kensou dodges Kelvin's Positive Momentum.

As Kelvin charges at him, Kensou is a lot better prepared, this time.  The
Chinese fighter exhales slowly, and jumps as the other fighter gets close
enough, a brief touch of his hand against Kelvin's shoulder the only contact
this particular attack makes.  Instead, Kensou uses that touch to propel himself
further up...  Into the air, curling up before his jump sort of 'peaks'.  And
then, we see how Psycho Power deals with silly little things like 'physics';
Kensou's left leg tucks under his body, while his right is brought up almost to
his opposite shoulder, and then rather than continue arcing downwards like he
/should/, the Psycho Soldier launches towards Kelvin like an arrow, his right
leg now extended as he 'rides' a streak of blue-white Psycho Power towards
Kelvin.  If there's anything you can't accuse Kensou's fighting style of being,
it's insufficiently flashy.  "YAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

COMBATSYS: Kelvin counters Ryuu Sougeki from Kensou with Empty Hand.

[        \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  < >  //////////////////            ]
Kelvin           0/-------/=======|======-\-------\0           Kensou

Flashy, but how efficient is it?  True, it's easy for some..including Kelvin..to
be caught actually watching Kensou's acrobatic movements than trying to prepare
for his attacks.  Perhaps the fact that he's facing away from the chinaboy for
half the technique helps him avoid being thus entranced.  Feeling that hand, he
can guess what is happening behind him, and by the time he wheels around, his
heightened awareness has confirmed it long before his eyes actually do.  At the
height, when Kensou is launching himself downward, his trajectory more or less
becomes known, and a few moments before his foot would plant soundly into
Kelvin's chest..a hand comes up.  Kelvin's hand to be precise.  It seems physics
doesn't suspend for just one man; an attack that should have probably went right
through, leaving Kelvin with both a broken wrist and sprawled out on the ground,
instead is stopped rather effectively in mid-air.  More or less just to make the
point, Kelvin gives Kensou's ankle a light knife-hand tap with his off-hand,
while he's still essentially hanging in mid-air.

All that coolness...  Denied!  Denied!  Kensou winces a bit as his ankle is
chopped, driving his momentum down into the ground, the Psycho Power gather
dispersing through /it/, rather than his intended target.  The poor, poor
fighting stage!  Still, while his attack might've been blunted, his intent
hasn't been, and /that's what matters/, particularly as now his fist is headed
right for Kelvin's face, snapping out a quick punch at the other fighter's nose.
Man...  He /knew/ Kelvin was holding back during all those other fights!

COMBATSYS: Kelvin blocks Kensou's Quick Punch.

[         \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\  < >  ///////////////////           ]
Kelvin           1/-------/=======|======-\-------\0           Kensou

It wasn't really that he was holding back.. ..perhaps he was just unprepared for
Kensou's bag of tricks?  Or perhaps, the thought that he's fighting for the
ladies has propelled his fighting to a higher level.  Whatever it is, this is
probably the best that Kelvin's done against him, that one solid energy
splashing over him aside.  The puzzle pieces are falling into place, but to his
credit, he doesn't get carried away just yet.  Instead, he focuses on Kensou,
already having taken a step back from the quick fist launching his way, and
raising the same arm that intercepted the Ryuu Gougeki so effectively to meet
the fist.. ..the force dissipating less harmfully through his forearm.  "It's
going pretty well, right" he allows, thawing the business-like, subtle scowl of
concentration his mouth had been fixed in just a moment before?  Yes, he knows
it.. ..he can faintly sense the slight fatigue, and 'what the heck do I do now?'
that lingers right below the surface, or so he believes it to be.  Yet.. ..it's
far from over.  He has to just keep on him..perhaps going against his own
theories into fighting, but..might as well try to ride the wave!  And so, a
moment later, he's returned to his more serious expression, and he makes a short
dash forward to close the gap, his hands in a blur of motion seeking Kensou's
arm as he suddenly stops, and tries to transfer all that inertia into a
practiced throw.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin successfully hits Kensou with Zero Momentum.

In a lot of ways, this fight really isn't going Kensou's way, but...  At least
it's staying interesting?  The Psycho Soldier tries to knock Kelvin's hand away,
but nevertheless is grabbed and thrown by that transferred inertia, though this
time he just skids back a bit, with a grunt, staggering back another few feet.
It's really time for him to re-evaluate the situation a little, so rather than
immediately going back on the offensive as is his wont, Kensou circles Kelvin
slowly from the now greater distance, keeping his eyes open for a better gap in
the sleepy fighter's defenses than he's been presented with so far.  "..."

COMBATSYS: Kensou focuses on his next action.

Kelvin           1/------=/=======|=======\-------\0           Kensou

With few exceptions, there's few such holes to be found with Kelvin's offense or
defense..at least, thus far, in the case of this fight.  Being, ideally, a
defensive fighter, it gives him special insight into the workings of such thing,
and being able to tap into his subconscious realizations helps him focus on just
that.  Apparently, it can work the same when he's primarily on the offense, and
has his opponent backed into a corner.  Normally, he might allow his friend and
sparring buddy this brief respite, flanking and trying to find a perfect chance
to launch back on the assault.  Yet, he gets the feeling that if he allows this
to pass, he might actually find a gap in the armor.  Accordingly, he moves to
close in again, feeling just a bit fatigued from all this running around..but
doesn't let it get to him just yet.  As soon as he's in range, he moves in with
his left hand again..only this time, it's a grab from the opposite side Kensou
should be used to.  Stopping in one step, and if he feels the grab is
successful, he'll swing Kensou around, and 'kindly' provide him some more
breathing room..only this time, he wouldn't be on his feet.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin successfully hits Kensou with Negative Momentum.

This is starting to border on the outright embarassing!  Kensou is all ready to
attack Kelvin despite the attack, when much to his own surprise, he's swung and
hurled away, landing on his back further across the arena and skidding again,
but this time in a rather more painful position.  "Argh...!" he grunts, finally
coming to a stop.  There is, however, one slight complication to the whole
thing, at least for Kelvin; somewhere along the line, he managed to form another
blue-white sphere of Psycho Power, which is currently heading right towards the
grappler, to give Kensou time enough to recover from the other youth's
surprising assault!

COMBATSYS: Kensou successfully hits Kelvin with Choukyuu Dan.

Uh oh, here it comes again.  Those blasted balls of psychic energy are a real
trouble spot for Kelvin, and once again, it seems that he's caught full force in
the middle of one.  Rather than try to bring his arms up to block it, as he has
unsuccessfully done so many times before, this time he does his best to try and
step out of the way.  Yet, even though in his mind he sees it coming a mile
away, his body just never seems to be able to move fast enough in these trouble
spots.  Taking a deep breath to brace for the impact as best he can in the
fraction of a second afforded, it does flatten him out this time, giving out a
telling cough to how much this really hurts, rather than just holding it in for
once.  However, in a few moments, he's already back to his feet.. ..clearing his
head, and returning his focus.  Now that he's managed to pull Kensou out of his
shell, in grand style, he takes another deep breath, calming himself, and
seeming to be preparing for.. ..something.  He can't even pretend to know what
Kensou is going to bring out of his sleeve, at this point, since the two have
never gotten quite this 'far'.

COMBATSYS: Kelvin focuses on his next action.

The Psycho Power attack does, thusly, exactly what Kensou had hoped it would;
buy him some more breathing room.  This is an unusual situation for him when
fighting Kelvin, that he'd no longer be controlling the 'pace' of the fight...
He's going to need to change that soon, or things are going to keep going badly.
Kensou could, of course, follow up with another Choukyuudan, but instead what
we're getting at the moment is a big ol' standoff, as the kenpo user watches
Kelvin, wanting to see just what it is his opponent has next.  And, you know,
just maybe, Kensou has a little something tucked up his sleeve, too.

COMBATSYS: Kensou focuses on his next action.

Kelvin           1/-======/=======|=======\===----\1           Kensou

Just what that something is, the Chinaman's obviously keeping it to himself..and
Kelvin isn't observant enough to read just what it is.  However, feeling that
the time is right, he once again launches himself forward.  He's once again
speeding forward, somewhat disappointed that Kensou mirrored his concentration;
normally, he tries not to be too predictable in circumstances like this, mixing
up his not-quite-vast assortment of throws and attacks in order to keep them
guessing.  But, once again, he's decided to go with what, without a doubt, has
been working.  Once again, as soon as he's up to the intently focussing Kensou,
his feet leave the ground, he spins around in the air to build up his momentum,
and then his right hand, clenched into a fist, rockets its apparently pathetic
muscle power towards Kensou's forehead.  He's actually clenching his teeth a
bit, this time, willing it to work..as he feels that essentially *everything*
hinges on what happens in the next few moments.

COMBATSYS: Kensou endures Kelvin's Andersons' Crushing Swing.

As Kelvin charges him again, Kensou's mouth pulls into a bit of a grim smile,
before he exhales a slow breath.  There's a stir of...  Something...  All around
the arena.  It's some sort of power building, but it isn't Chi, that's for sure.
Kensou's clothes, from his black shorts to his white hooded sleeveless shirt,
all ripple lightly in an nonexistent breeze, that also toys with the Psycho
Soldier's mop of unruly brown hair...  And he stands his ground as Kelvin spins
and strikes, his head snapping back as the other fighter's fist impacts with
it...  And his hands come up and tap, ever so lightly, against Kelvin's torso...

COMBATSYS: Kelvin fails to interrupt Senki Hakkei from Kensou with Retroversal
Slingshot.

Kelvin           1/-======/=======|====---\-------\0           Kensou

"GOTCHA!" exclaims Kensou, and that strange power flares, channeling through his
hands to turn what appears to be an silly little tap into a sudden, massive
explosion of blue-white energy.  Centered in front of his hands, the sphere
envelops poor Kelvin, rocking him with repeated blasts of Psycho Power, each
explosion sending Kensou skidding back a little bit further as a telekinetic
force rocks the arena.  "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--!  I...  I can't...!"  Which is about
when Kensou's ability to /control/ the Senki Hakkei cuts out, and the ensuing
backlash hurls both the young Psions in opposite directions, to land on the far
side of the arena, presumably in heaps; Kensou's palms are, noticeably,
/smoking/.

He really shouldn't have been caught by that.  In fact, he wasn't.. ..he knew
better, knew something big was coming.  He was hoping that he'd have time to
catch it in a flash of insight, and be prepared to end this once and for all!
In the end, his body fails him again by lagging a few precious moments behind
what he knows it should have been doing.  He seemed to have been moving into
position to try something, but once the blasts begin, he has as little control
over the situation as Kensou ends up having by the end.  He's blown clear,
literally to the other end of the field, where he slides in to a rather
ungraceful stop, leaving a Kelvin's-back-size skid mark for the last few feet.
His clothes.. ..they're ruined, yet again, tears and scorch marks everywhere,
yet somehow they retain enough integrity to remain decent.  This isn't that kind
of fighting game!  "..hah..," he exhales.. ..unsteadily moving to his feet.
"..d-dammit."  It's not very often that you hear things like that come out of
Kelvin.  He's not worried that he'll now have to make another trip to the mall's
clothing store.  He's more disappointed in himself that his body still isn't up
to this, and that he allowed himself to get caught up in that.. ..*again*.
While he retains enough consciousness to not be quite counted out yet, it's
clear that there's not much left in the now faintly smoldering Kelvin..that is,
smoldering in the literal sense.  Outwardly, outburst aside, he seems to remain
calm.

Getting back to his feet a little gingerly, Kensou is worn out; both from the
fight in general, what with all the times he's been tossed around and /hit in
the head/, and also from the exertion of channeling that much Psycho Power at
once.  He actually looks /surprised/ to see Kelvin getting back up...  Usually,
that's enough to lay the poor fella out for a while.  His surprise soon breaks
into a broad grin, and a rueful shake of his head.  Once again, it'd be pretty
easy for him to stay away and pick the other boy off with a Choukyuudan, but
that'd be kind of a douche-y thing to do.  Instead, he takes off at a run
towards Kelvin.  "Aaaaaaaaaaaaah...   Yaaa-!" the latter cry comes as he finally
crosses the distance, and his fist lashes out again, this time at Kelvin's
sternum.  But has he made a mistake by not taking the easy route?!

COMBATSYS: Kelvin fails to counter Quick Punch from Kensou with Retroversal
Slingshot.

Kensou           0/-------/--=====|

We did say that he was still conscious enough to make the extra effort, right?
Straining against his own will to take a nap to fight back to his feet.  But, it
seems that it was more a token effort at best.  Perhaps realizing that, once
again, this just isn't his time, he mostly stands there.. ..making an effort to
set into position for something, but at the last moment, he just drops whatever
it was.  Perhaps his concentration was drifting from the sudden fatigue, or he
did it intentionally, but when Kensou's fist impacts.. ..it does so to a fellow
that pretty much was already going down.  He sinks to the ground on his knees,
at first, as though in slow motion, then flops the rest of the way to the
ground.  How.. ..anti-climactic?  Listen, he's even snoring faintly, as he's
suddenly fast asleep.

Gee, now Kensou's gonna feel bad...  Punching a guy who was already on his way
to the ground.  The Chinese fighter steps out of the way as Kelvin slumps down
and out and starts sleeping on the arena floor, looking a bit surprised at this
turn of events!  "...Eh?" he wonders, and...  Yep.  He can hear snoring, which
causes Kensou to heave a little sigh and shake his head, one hand pressed
against his forehead.  Nevertheless...  Victory is his!  Which is confirmed by
the referee, to the scattered cheers of the spectators for this somewhat
second-string match.  So...  Hooray!

COMBATSYS: Kensou has ended the fight here.
